N3 Grammar Course, Part 1: Judgment, Change, Time & Voice

N3 grammar is where Japanese stops being "sentence patterns" and becomes nuance: a dozen ways to say "should," each with its own flavor of certainty; a whole toolkit for how things change over time. The complete N3 list is ~210 points; this chapter covers Part A (~105) — judgment & obligation, change & decisions, conditionals, time expressions, compound-verb endings, negation patterns, and voice. Part B (文の文法2) covers degree, reason, the に/を/と phrase families, contrast, and keigo.

How the exam tests this: 問題1(文法形式の判断, 13 items)— a blank and 4 near-synonymous grammar forms. N3 distractors differ by nuance and connection rules, so every table below gives both. All forms connect to plain forms unless noted.

1. Judgment & Certainty: The わけ・はず・べき Family

Japanese grades its confidence. Line these up on one dial — from logical conclusion to moral duty:

PatternMeaningExample
〜わけだno wonder; so that means (conclusion from facts)3年も日本にいたのか。道理で上手なわけだ。
〜わけではないit doesn't mean that; not necessarily肉が嫌いなわけではないが、あまり食べない。
〜わけがないthere's no way that (strong denial)まじめな彼がうそをつくわけがない。
〜わけにはいかないcan't (social/moral reasons)大事な会議だから、休むわけにはいかない。
〜ないわけにはいかないhave no choice but to上司の頼みだから、やらないわけにはいかない。
〜はずだshould be (reasoned expectation)昨日送ったから、今日届くはずだ。
〜はずがないcannot possibly be彼がこんな時間に来るはずがない。
〜べきだ/べきではないshould / should not (duty, opinion)学生はもっと本を読むべきだ。(する→すべき OK)
〜に違いないmust be, no doubt電気がついている。家にいるに違いない。
〜に決まっているdefinitely (emphatic, colloquial)そんなうまい話はうそに決まっている。
〜おそれがあるthere is a risk of (formal, bad outcomes)台風で電車が止まるおそれがある。
〜そうにない/そうもないshows no sign of happening仕事が多くて今日中に終わりそうにない。
〜とは限らないnot necessarily always高いものがいいとは限らない。

Nuance anchors: はず = "my reasoning says so"; わけ = "the facts explain it"; べき = "duty says so"; に違いない = "evidence convinces me". The negatives are NOT parallel: わけではない is a soft partial denial ("not that…"), わけがない/はずがない are strong impossibilities. The exam plants exactly this asymmetry.

Seeming & hearsay (evidence-flavored judgment)

PatternMeaningExample
〜みたいだseems (colloquial)外は雨が降っているみたいだ。
〜らしいapparently (hearsay); typical of来月値段が上がるらしい。/春らしい天気
〜ように見えるlooks like彼女は怒っているように見える。
〜ような気がするhave a feeling thatどこかで会ったような気がする。
〜とみえてit seems (judging from evidence)疲れているとみえて、すぐ寝てしまった。
〜ということだ/とのことだI hear that (relayed info)田中さんは今日休むとのことです。
〜というのは… means; definingLCCというのは、格安航空会社のことだ。

2. Change, Decision & Rules: ようになる vs ことになる

The four-cell grid every N3 student must own — なる (happens) vs する (someone acts), crossed with よう (ability/state) vs こと (decision):

PatternMeaningExample
〜ようになるcome to ~ (gradual change/ability)日本語が話せるようになった。
〜ようにするmake an effort to ~毎日野菜を食べるようにしている。
〜ことになるit's been decided that (external)来月大阪に転勤することになった。
〜ことにするI decide to (own choice)甘い物は食べないことにした。
〜ことになっているit's the rule/custom that社員は8時半に出勤することになっている。
〜ようにso that (purpose with non-volitional verb)忘れないようにメモしてください。
〜ことはないno need toそんなに心配することはない。
〜こと(文末)rule/instruction (written)レポートは金曜までに出すこと。
〜ことからfrom the fact that道が濡れていることから、雨が降ったと分かる。
〜ことは〜がit's true that … but読んだことは読んだが、よく分からなかった。

Classic exam bait: 転勤することになりました (the company decided) vs 転勤することにしました (I decided). Japanese culture prefers ことになる even for semi-own decisions (softening responsibility) — 結婚することになりました is the standard wedding announcement!

3. Conditionals & Suppositions, N3 Edition

PatternMeaningExample
〜ば〜ほどthe more … the more考えれば考えるほど分からなくなる。
〜ばいいshould just; it's enough to分からなければ先生に聞けばいい。
〜ばよかったshould have (regret)もっと早く来ればよかった。
〜ば〜のにif only (unrealized + regret)お金があれば買えたのに。
〜さえ〜ばif only; as long as時間さえあれば、旅行に行きたい。
〜場合(は)in the case of雨の場合は中止です。

Recognition tips: さえ almost always signals 〜さえ〜ば in 問題1; ば〜ほど needs the SAME verb twice (考えれば考えるほど); たとえ is a magnet for 〜ても later in the sentence — spotting the pair is free points in the scramble question too.

4. Time & Aspect: Locating Actions Precisely

PatternMeaningExample
〜うちにwhile (before the chance passes)明るいうちに帰りましょう。
〜ないうちにbefore (it changes)暗くならないうちに帰ろう。
〜間(に)during / within the span留守の間に泥棒が入った。
〜最中にright in the middle of会議の最中に電話が鳴った。
〜際(に)on the occasion of (formal)お降りの際は足元にご注意ください。
〜たとたんthe instant that (+sudden event)ドアを開けたとたん、猫が飛び出した。
〜たびにevery timeこの歌を聞くたびに故郷を思い出す。
〜たところwhen I did, (I found)電話したところ、彼は留守だった。
〜ところだったalmost / narrowly avoidedもう少しで事故になるところだった。
〜てはじめてonly after; not until病気になってはじめて健康のありがたさが分かった。
〜ついでにwhile at it買い物のついでに図書館に寄った。
〜途中でon the way学校へ行く途中で先生に会った。
〜から〜にかけてfrom A through B (fuzzy span)今夜から明日の朝にかけて雪が降るでしょう。
〜おきに/〜ごとにat intervals of / every6時間おきに薬を飲む。/10分ごとに来る。
〜ぶりにfor the first time in (period)10年ぶりに高校の友達に会った。
〜中(ちゅう/じゅう)during / throughout会議中/一日中雨だった。
〜てからはever since (life changed)子どもが生まれてからは、生活が変わった。
〜たものだused to (nostalgia)子どものころ、よくこの川で泳いだものだ。

The classic triple: うちに vs 間に vs 最中に. 間に = neutral "within the span"; うちに adds urgency "before the window closes"; 最中に = "at the very peak of doing" (and something interrupts). たとたん takes た-form and demands a sudden, uncontrolled result — 開けたとたん勉強しました ✗ is exactly the wrongness the exam offers.

5. Compound-Verb Endings & Suffixes: Micro-Meanings

SuffixMeaningExample
〜きる/〜きれないdo completely / can't finish一晩で読みきった。/多すぎて食べきれない。
〜こむinto; deeply急いで電車に乗り込んだ。
〜なおすredoレポートを書き直した。
〜とおすcarry through to the end最後まで意見を言い通した。
〜づらいawkward/painful toこの靴は歩きづらい。
〜的(てき)-ic/-al (makes な-adj)経済的な問題/個人的な意見
〜向け/〜向きmade for / suited to子ども向けの番組/初心者向きのコース
〜がる(3rd person) shows feeling妹は犬を怖がっている。

Contrast cluster for 問題1: 〜がち (frequency-tendency: ひきがち), 〜気味 (current slight state: 風邪気味), 〜っぽい (character trait or -ish quality: 忘れっぽい). Three flavors of "kind of" — memorize one example each as the anchor.

6. Negation Patterns

PatternMeaningExample
決して〜ないnever, absolutely notこの恩は決して忘れません。
めったに〜ないrarely彼はめったに怒らない。
別に〜ないnot particularly別に用はない。
とても〜ないcan't possiblyこんな問題はとても解けない。
〜ないことはないit's not that … not (hedged yes)行けないことはないが、行きたくない。
〜ずにwithout doing (=ないで, written)朝ご飯を食べずに家を出た。(する→せずに!)
〜ずにはいられないcan't help doingあの映画は泣かずにはいられない。
〜ようがないno way/means to do住所が分からないので、連絡しようがない。
〜ようとしないwon't even try息子は野菜を食べようとしない。
〜ようとするbe about to; try to電車に乗ろうとしたとき、ドアが閉まった。

Adverb-negation agreement is a beloved item type: 決して/めったに/別に/とても must find 〜ない downstream. And する's ず-form is せず — 勉強せずに ○, しずに ✗.

7. Voice & て-Form Feelings

PatternMeaningExample
〜(さ)せられるcausative-passive: be made to do母に野菜を食べさせられた。
〜させてくださいplease let meその仕事は私にやらせてください。
〜させてもらえませんかcould you let me…?明日休ませてもらえませんか。
〜てほしいwant someone to doもっとゆっくり話してほしい。
〜て済むsettled with just ~電話で済む用事なら、行かなくてもいい。
〜ても構わないdon't mind if鉛筆で書いても構いません。
〜てもしょうがないno use doing過ぎたことを後悔してもしょうがない。
〜てしょうがない/てたまらないunbearably ~眠くてしょうがない。/ほしくてたまらない。
〜ている場合じゃないno time to be ~ingテレビを見ている場合じゃない。
〜てごらんtry doing (gentle)この本、読んでごらん。
〜ふりをするpretend to彼は寝ているふりをした。
〜ままleaving as-is靴を履いたまま入らないでください。

The causative-passive is a formation exam: Group 1 飲む→飲ませられる(=飲まされる), Group 2 食べる→食べさせられる, する→させられる. Meaning check: 食べさせられた = I was forced to eat (and resented it) — the suffering nuance is part of the answer.

8. How the Exam Tests Part A — Worked Examples

先生に相談した( )、いいアドバイスをもらえた。
① ところ ② ばかり ③ ように ④ ことは → : 〜たところ "when I did, I found".

大切な試合だから、負ける( )。
① はずではない ② わけにはいかない ③ ことにしている ④ ようになっている → : social/moral impossibility.

暗く( )うちに、帰りましょう。
① なる ② なった ③ ならない ④ なって → : ないうちに "before it gets dark".

Strategy checklist

  • Check the connection first (た-form? ない-form? noun+の?): half the distractors die on connection rules alone — たとたん needs た; ないうちに needs ない; べき takes dictionary form.
  • Then match nuance: who decided (ことにする/ことになる)? natural change or effort (ようになる/ようにする)? reasoned (はず) or moral (べき)?
  • Look for signal adverbs: たとえ→ても, 決して→ない, さえ→ば.

Summary & Key Takeaways

  • Part A ≈ 105 N3 points across seven families; nuance + connection rules are what distinguish near-synonyms.
  • Judgment dial: わけだ (facts explain) / はずだ (reasoning) / べきだ (duty) / に違いない (conviction); negatives are asymmetric (わけではない soft, わけがない hard).
  • The 2×2 grid: ようになる・ようにする・ことになる・ことにする — change vs decision, external vs own.
  • Time nuances: うちに (window closing), 最中に (interrupted peak), たとたん (sudden result), たびに, ぶりに, っぱなし.
  • Suffix flavors: がち/気味/っぽい, きる/きれない, づらい/がたい.
  • Negation partners: 決して・めったに・別に・とても+ない; ずに (せずに for する).
  • Causative-passive 〜させられる = forced and unhappy about it. Part B next: degree, reason, phrase families, and keigo.
