Baron de Montesquieu (1689–1755): In The Spirit of the Laws (1748), Montesquieu argued for the separation of powers. To stop rulers becoming tyrants, power should be divided into three separate branches: the legislative (law-making), the executive (law-enforcing), and the judicial (judges/courts).
