Welcome to the Control Centre: The Brain
The brain is the most complex organ in your body. It acts like a high-powered computer, processing information from your senses and telling your body how to react. In this chapter, we will explore the different parts of the brain and look at how scientists try to study and fix it when things go wrong.
Note: This topic is for students taking the GCSE Biology course (1BI0). If you are taking Combined Science, you don't need to learn this specific chapter!
1. Structures of the Brain
The brain isn't just one big grey blob; it is divided into specific areas that have very different jobs. For your exam, you need to know three main parts:
A. The Cerebral Hemispheres (The Cerebrum)
This is the largest part of the brain (the wrinkly top part). It is split into two halves called hemispheres.
What it does: It controls "high-level" functions like senses, language, memory, behaviour, and conscious thought (your personality).
Quick Tip: If you are deciding what to eat for lunch, you are using your cerebral hemispheres!
B. The Cerebellum
This is located at the back of the brain, underneath the cerebrum.
What it does: It is all about balance and posture. It also coordinates our muscle movements so they are smooth and precise.
Memory Aid: Imagine a tightrope walker balancing with a bell in each hand. Cere-bell-um helps you balance!
C. The Medulla Oblongata
This is found in the brainstem, right at the base of the brain, connecting to the spinal cord.
What it does: It controls things you don't have to think about—unconscious activities. This includes your heart rate and breathing rate. It also controls reflexes like sneezing and swallowing.
Quick Tip: You don't "decide" to make your heart beat; the medulla does it for you automatically.

2. Investigating the Brain (Higher Tier Only)
The brain is very delicate and protected by a thick skull, which makes it hard to study. Scientists use special scanners to see what’s happening inside without having to perform surgery.
CT Scans (Computed Tomography)
A CT scan uses lots of X-rays to create a \(3D\) image of the brain's structure.
How it works: It shows the physical "map" of the brain. It can show if there is a tumour (a mass of cells) or bleeding in the brain.
Limitation: A CT scan only shows the structure (what it looks like), not the function (how it is working).
PET Scans (Positron Emission Tomography)
PET scans are more advanced because they show which parts of the brain are active in real-time.
How it works: The patient is injected with a small amount of a radioactive tracer (usually a type of glucose). Active brain cells use more glucose. The scanner detects where the tracer is being used.
Why it's useful: It can show brain activity while a person is doing a task, like speaking or listening. It is very useful for identifying diseases like Alzheimer’s or finding the exact location of a tumour.
Did you know? On a PET scan, the most active parts of the brain usually show up as bright red or yellow, while inactive parts are blue or black!
3. Limitations in Treatment (Higher Tier Only)
Treating problems in the brain and spinal cord (the Central Nervous System) is incredibly difficult. There are three main reasons for this:
1. Complexity and Delicacy
The brain is made of billions of tiny neurones. It is physically very soft and easy to damage. One tiny slip during surgery could lead to permanent disability or changes in personality.
2. It Doesn't Repair Itself Well
Unlike your skin or bones, neurones in the Central Nervous System do not regenerate (regrow) easily. If the spinal cord is cut, the damage is usually permanent, leading to spinal injuries and paralysis.
3. Hard to Reach
The brain is protected by the skull, and many drugs cannot pass from the blood into the brain because of a natural filter called the "blood-brain barrier." This makes treating brain tumours or infections with medicine very tough.
Common Exam Mistake: Many students think the brain can heal just like a cut on your finger. In the exam, remember to state that neurones in the CNS do not regrow and that surgery is high-risk because of the brain's complexity.
