Difficulty Verdict

The October/November 2025 Psychology (9990) papers present a high-tier challenge. While the direct factual recall questions in Paper 13 are relatively straightforward, the Research Methods and Specialist Options components demand a sophisticated level of methodological translation and debate application. Specifically, Paper 33\'s focus on the reductionism versus holism debate and Paper 43\'s structural planning requirements (such as structured observation and field experiments) shift the overall difficulty to a solid 4 stars.

Where the Marks Are

High-yield marks are heavily concentrated in the planning and evaluation essays. In Paper 23, the 10-mark case study design (Question 10) is a major separator. Across Papers 33 and 43, the 10-mark evaluative essays require candidates to thoroughly address the named issue (such as self-reports or objective/subjective data) and provide detailed, contextualized strengths and weaknesses with supporting studies to reach Level 5.

Examiner Pitfalls

  • The 'Generic' Trap: Many candidates lose marks by writing generic definitions of methodological concepts. For example, in the Fagen et al. elephant learning questions, writing about 'individual differences' in a vacuum without referencing specific elephant training challenges (e.g., preferred reinforcers like saline vs. water) limits candidate marks.
  • Lack of Context-Linked Ethics: In Paper 23, explaining how to inform children of their right to withdraw was frequently marked down if it was not explicitly phrased in a child-friendly way linked to the toys/playroom scenario.
  • Sloppy Step-by-Step Hierarchies: When describing systematic desensitisation for phobias (e.g., flying insects), examiners expect a clear, logical progression from the least to most feared stimulus combined with relaxation techniques, rather than a vague overview of the therapy.

Preparation & Exam Strategy

To succeed, students must practice the 'linked details' technique: for every strength, weakness, or design choice, always include a concrete anchor back to the study\'s target population or setup. Furthermore, for 10-mark essays, memorising the specific results of supporting studies is crucial, as any Paper 3 evaluation that lacks concrete results cannot access the highest marking band.
