Question 1 · Structured Recall & Diagram Labeling
8 marksFig. 1.1 represents a simplified vertical section through an insect-pollinated flower.
[Diagram description: A vertical section of an insect-pollinated flower showing: structure P is a large, brightly coloured petal; structure Q is the pollen-producing anther at the top of a filament; structure R is the sticky, receptive stigma positioned centrally inside the flower; structure S is a green leaflike sepal at the base of the flower enclosing the base of the petals.]
(a) (i) Identify structures P, Q, and R labelled on Fig. 1.1.
(ii) State the function of structure S.
(b) Describe two structural differences between the pollen grains of an insect-pollinated flower and a wind-pollinated flower.
(c) State two environmental conditions required for the germination of seeds.

Worked solution
(a) (i) Structure P is the petal, structure Q is the anther, and structure R is the stigma.
(ii) Structure S is the sepal; its primary function is to protect the unopened flower bud.
(b) Pollen grains from wind-pollinated flowers are typically smaller, lighter, and have a smooth surface compared to the larger, stickier, or spiked pollen of insect-pollinated flowers. They are also produced in much greater quantities.
(c) The essential environmental conditions required for seed germination are water/moisture, oxygen, and a suitable/favourable temperature (any two).
(ii) Structure S is the sepal; its primary function is to protect the unopened flower bud.

Marking scheme
(a) (i) 1 mark for each correct structure [max 3]:
- P: petal [1];
- Q: anther (ALLOW stamen) [1];
- R: stigma (ALLOW carpel / pistil) [1].
(a) (ii) 1 mark for:
- protects the flower / internal parts when in bud / before opening [1];
(IGNORE attracts insects, produces food).
(b) 1 mark per valid structural difference [max 2]:
- wind-pollinated pollen grains are lighter / smaller / have lower mass (ALLOW insect-pollinated are heavier / larger) [1];
- wind-pollinated pollen grains are smooth / non-sticky (ALLOW insect-pollinated are sticky / rough / spiky / have hooks) [1];
- wind-pollinated pollen grains are produced in larger quantities / numbers [1].
(REJECT differences describing petals or stigmas).
(c) Any two from [max 2]:
- water / moisture [1];
- oxygen [1];
- suitable temperature / warm temperature / warmth (ALLOW optimum temperature) [1];
(REJECT sunlight / light, soil, nutrients, fertiliser).

- Q: anther (ALLOW stamen) [1];
- R: stigma (ALLOW carpel / pistil) [1].
