Difficulty Verdict
The May 2023 examination series represents a demanding and balanced assessment, earning a 4-star difficulty rating. Candidates were required to seamlessly transition between high-level strategic evaluations and complex quantitative operations, particularly with the introduction of multi-variable decision trees and reducing-balance depreciation under tight time constraints.
Where the Marks Are
Marks were heavily concentrated in the strategic application of core tools. In Paper 1, the 20-mark Section C decision question demanded deep risk and probability-weighted analysis of Option 1 (capacity expansion) versus Option 2 (joint venture). In Paper 2, candidates who secured high marks demonstrated strong command over quantitative components, including Investment Appraisal (ARR, Payback, and NPV calculations) and reducing balance depreciation, while providing balanced, multi-perspective evaluations in the 10-mark recommendation questions.
Examiner Pitfalls & Mistakes to Avoid
- PPP Misdefinition: Many candidates incorrectly defined Public-Private Partnerships (PPP) as standard commercial mergers or joint ventures, losing easy marks by failing to specify the collaboration between the public (government) and private sectors.
- Missing Financial Units: A significant number of students calculated the correct numerical values for NPV, TPV, or depreciation but omitted crucial currency symbols ($) or scale indicators (e.g., millions or thousands), leading to automatic mark deductions.
- One-Sided Evaluations: In the 10-mark and 20-mark essay questions, failing to present balanced arguments for and against both options limited candidates to a maximum of 5-6 marks.
Strategic Advice & Predictions
To maximize performance in future sessions, students must practice quantitative formats regularly to ensure accuracy with units and formatting. Our analysis indicates that Budgets and Lean Production / Quality Management are currently overdue for significant testing. Mastery of these quantitative and operational areas will be key differentiator elements in upcoming exam cycles.
