Difficulty Verdict: A Test of Core Historical Skills

The May 2023 IB History examination represents a balanced assessment of candidates' skills across source analysis (Paper 1) and thematic argument (Paper 2). With an overall difficulty rating of 3.5 out of 5, the papers successfully distinguished between candidates who merely knew the historical narratives and those who possessed the critical analytical tools to dissect evidence and construct sustained arguments.

Where Marks are Won and Lost

In Paper 1, the 9-mark synthesis question is the primary differentiator. Candidates who successfully integrated their own detailed contextual knowledge with explicit evaluations of the provided sources easily secured top-band marks. Conversely, those who treated the sources and their own knowledge as separate entities often struggled to rise above the middle tier. In the 4-mark value and limitations question, candidates frequently lost marks by failing to evaluate both aspects, or by offering generic evaluations without anchoring their claims in the specific origin, purpose, and content of the document.

For Paper 2, the 15-mark essay questions demanded precise, multi-regional case studies. A major area where marks were lost was the failure to respect the regional requirements of the prompts, which often demand examples chosen from different regions. Furthermore, candidates frequently slipped into purely narrative accounts, describing 'what happened' rather than evaluating the 'why' and 'how' in relation to the analytical concepts in the question.

Strategic Guidance and Master Techniques

  • Paper 1 Mastery: Treat the source analysis as a formulaic exercise. For the comparative questions, use a quick grid to identify three points of comparison and three of contrast before writing. For the OPVL question, explicitly structure your response under separate 'Value' and 'Limitations' headings, and ensure you make at least one reference to origin, purpose, and content for each.
  • Paper 2 Essay Structure: Start with a clear thesis statement that directly answers the prompt. Avoid chronological dumps; instead, organize your paragraphs around thematic points (such as political, economic, or ideological factors) rather than running through history from start to finish.

Future Predictions and Overdue Topics

Expect upcoming cohorts to see a strong focus on the interaction between domestic economic instability and the rise of authoritarian regimes. For Paper 2, the transition from Cold War confrontation to reconciliation, particularly in the 1980s, remains highly fertile ground for testing, as does the role of non-aligned actors in the margins of global crises.
