Overall Exam Verdict
The May 2025 IB English B HL exam offered a well-balanced assessment across the prescribed themes of Identities, Human Ingenuity, Experiences, and Social Organization. Paper 1 provided highly relatable scenarios: Task 1 focused on sleep deprivation among students (Health and well-being), Task 2 evaluated digital footprints (Technology), and Task 3 centered on a multicultural summer camp experience (Customs and traditions). Paper 2 featured diverse and engaging reading texts. Text A presented a professional perspective on living with invisible disabilities at UNICEF (The working world); Text B offered practical guidance on becoming a better musician (Artistic expressions); and Text C selected a literary piece focusing on postwar London and assimilation (Migration).
Where the Marks Are Won and Lost
Success in this session was heavily determined by Criterion C (Conceptual Understanding) in Paper 1 and exact extraction skills in Paper 2.
- Paper 1: Higher marks were awarded to candidates who selected the most appropriate text type. For instance, in Task 1, a Proposal with clear, professional formatting (headings, bullet points, action plans) was far more effective than a generic Pamphlet. In Task 2, candidates who adopted an engaging, first-person narrative with appropriate online formatting achieved the top band for a Social media posting.
- Paper 2: True/False justifications required exact, unparaphrased quotes from the text. Many candidates lost marks by including prepositions or surrounding clauses that shifted the focus or by copying whole paragraphs when only a simple clause was needed. Additionally, pronoun reference questions demanded exact word matches (e.g., extracting 'teachers' instead of paraphrasing 'educators').
Examiner Pitfalls & How to Avoid Them
According to the official marking notes, critical errors occurred in formatting and scope:
- True/False Over-quoting: In Text C (Q35-38), candidates frequently wrote excessively long justifications. Adding 'the simple truth was' or surrounding sentences to the correct quote invalidated the mark. Keep quotes brief and targeted.
- Vocabulary Extractions: In matching synonyms (Q7-10, Q14-16), adding words like prepositions or articles (e.g., 'a ball game' instead of 'ball game') led to lost marks. Extract only the exact words matching the syntactic function.
- Criterion B Gaps: In Paper 1, omitting or only superficially touching upon any of the three required bullet points capped the Criterion B grade at the 4-6 band. Plan your essay to ensure equal development for all prompts.
Strategy and Prediction
To maximize scores in future sessions, students should practice identifying and executing the key conventions of highly tested text types, such as Proposals, Speeches, and Presentations. For Paper 2, focus on targeted skimming exercises to locate exact phrases without getting distracted by nearby vocabulary. Core themes like The environment and Education remain highly overdue and are likely to feature prominently in upcoming examinations.
