Verdict on Difficulty

The May 2024 IB Psychology SL examination presents a moderate to challenging hurdle. While Paper 1 Section A offers straightforward prompts on neuroplasticity, memory models, and acculturation, the Extended Response Questions (ERQs) in both papers demand highly disciplined conceptual boundaries and critical thinking. Scoring highly depends on avoiding generic pre-prepared essay templates and directly tackling the specific command terms.

Where the Marks are Won

In Section A, high marks are locked in by keeping a tight focus on the physiological process or cognitive theory requested before summarizing a single, well-mapped study. For example, explicitly identifying the relevant brain area in neuroplasticity (e.g., the posterior hippocampus in Maguire et al., 2000) guarantees a top-band mark (7-9). In the ERQs, the highest marks are allocated to Criterion D (Critical Thinking) and Criterion C (Use of Research), where students must not only outline studies but thoroughly weigh up methodological trade-offs such as internal vs. ecological validity.

Critical Examiner Pitfalls

  • Confusing Techniques with Methods: In Paper 1, Question 4 (Biological Approach ERQ), examiners explicitly warned that brain imaging techniques (like fMRI/MRI), twin/adoption designs, and animal models are not research methods in themselves. They must be contextualized within true experiments, quasi-experiments, or correlational designs.
  • Socioeconomic Status (SES) vs. Trauma: In Paper 2, Question 4 (Developmental), focusing purely on poverty/low SES without an explicit link to trauma capped Criterion B marks at a maximum of [2].
  • One-Sided Evaluations: Addressing only strengths or only limitations in any evaluative ERQ capped Criterion D (Critical Thinking) at a maximum of [3] out of [6].

Strategic Advice & Predictions

To prepare for future sessions, practice writing active, balanced evaluations that always feature at least two strengths and two limitations. For the core approaches, ensure you have one solid research method essay prepared for each approach. Based on the recurrence patterns, cognitive biases and cultural influences on individual behavior are highly overdue for ERQs in upcoming series.
