In this chapter, we are going to explore two of the most productive and protective ecosystems on Earth: wetlands and mangroves. Think of these areas as nature's "kidneys" (because they filter out waste) and nature's "sponges" (because they soak up excess water). Unfortunately, human activities are putting these vital areas at risk. By the end of these notes, you’ll understand why these ecosystems matter and exactly how we are changing them.
1. What Are Wetlands and Mangroves?
Before we look at the impacts, let's make sure we know what we’re protecting. Don't worry if these terms feel new; they are simpler than they sound!
- Wetlands: These are areas where the soil is covered by water (saturated) for all or part of the year. You might know them as swamps, marshes, or bogs. The water can be fresh, salty, or brackish (a mix of both).
- Mangroves: These are special types of wetlands found in tropical and subtropical coasts. They are dominated by mangrove trees, which have "walking roots" that can survive in salty ocean water where most other plants would die.

Dams are built upstream on rivers to create reservoirs or generate electricity. However, wetlands downstream rely on a steady flow of water and sediment (dirt and minerals). Dams trap this sediment, causing the wetlands downstream to "starve" and eventually erode away because they aren't being "fed" new soil.
C. Agricultural and Industrial Pollution
Wetlands are sensitive to what flows into them.
1. Nutrient Runoff: Excess fertilizers from farms contain nitrogen and phosphorus. When these enter a wetland, they can lead to eutrophication (overgrowth of algae), which uses up all the oxygen and kills fish. (We cover this more in Topic 8.5!)
2. Toxins: Chemicals from factories or pesticides can build up in the sediment, harming the plants and animals that live there.
D. Overfishing and Resource Extraction
Humans often use wetlands for food. If we take too many fish or shellfish from these areas, we disrupt the food web, which can lead to the collapse of the entire ecosystem.

When we destroy wetlands and mangroves, we lose the "free" services they provide. This is a classic example of how human impacts on ecosystems eventually hurt humans, too.
- Increased Flooding: Without the "sponge" of a wetland, rainwater flows directly into streets and homes.
- Poorer Water Quality: Without the "kidneys" of the wetland to filter out pollutants, our drinking water and oceans become dirtier.
- Loss of Biodiversity: Many species of birds, fish, and amphibians lose their homes and may become endangered.

5. Solutions and Legislation
How do we stop this? In the United States, the most important law to remember for this topic is the Clean Water Act.
The Clean Water Act helps protect wetlands by requiring permits for anyone who wants to discharge dredged or fill material into "waters of the United States." This makes it much harder for developers to simply fill in a swamp without proving they have a plan to minimize the environmental damage.
