Theme 3: Current and Future Study and Employment
Chapter: Life at School / College (学校生活)
Welcome to your study notes for Life at school/college! Talking about your daily routine, school facilities, rules, and opinions is one of the most common and rewarding topics in AQA GCSE Chinese (8673). Whether you are taking Foundation or Higher tier, mastering this topic will set you up for success across all four exam papers: Listening, Speaking, Reading, and Writing.
Don't worry if learning Chinese characters seems challenging at first. We will break everything down into clear vocabulary groups, step-by-step grammar patterns, and helpful exam strategies!
1. Essential School Facilities & Environment (学校设施)
To describe your school, you need to know the words for different types of institutions and the places within them.
Types of Schools
• 学校 (xuéxiào) — School
• 小学 (xiǎoxué) — Primary school (literally: "small school")
• 中学 (zhōngxué) — Secondary school / Middle school (literally: "middle school")
• 大学 (dàxué) — University / College (literally: "big school")
School Campus Facilities
• 教室 (jiàoshì) — Classroom
• 图书馆 (túshūguǎn) — Library
• 礼堂 (lǐtáng) — Assembly hall / Auditorium
• 操场 (cāochǎng) — Sports field / Playground
• 体育馆 (tǐyùguǎn) — Gymnasium / Sports hall
• 实验室 (shíyànshì) — Laboratory
• 食堂 (shítáng) / 餐厅 (cāntīng) — Canteen / Dining hall
• 办公室 (bàngōngshì) — Office (e.g. teachers' staff room)
Memory Trick: Notice how many rooms end in 室 (shì), which means room (e.g. 教室, 实验室, 办公室), while large buildings or venues often end in 馆 (guǎn) (e.g. 图书馆, 体育馆).
Key Takeaway: When describing your campus in writing or speaking, pair a facility with an activity (for example: 我在图书馆看书 — I read books in the library).
2. Daily School Routine & Organization (学校日常生活)
Being able to narrate your school day in chronological order is a crucial skill for both the Speaking (Photo Card & General Conversation) and Writing exams.
Key Routine Vocabulary
• 上学 (shàngxué) — To go to school
• 放学 (fàngxué) — To finish school for the day
• 上课 (shàngkè) — To attend class / Start class
• 下课 (xiàkè) — To finish class / Class dismisses
• 课程表 (kèchéngbiǎo) — Timetable
• 休息 (xiūxi) — Break / Rest
• 作业 (zuòyè) / 功课 (gōngkè) — Homework
• 做作业 (zuò zuòyè) — To do homework
• 考试 (kǎoshì) — Exam / Test
• 成绩 (chéngjì) — Grades / Exam results
• 校服 (xiàofú) — School uniform
• 穿 (chuān) — To wear (clothes/uniform)
Sequencing Your Day
To get higher marks for variety, connect your daily actions using time phrases and sequencing words like 先 (xiān) ... 然后 (ránhòu) ... (First... then...).
Example: 我早上八点上学。我们先上英文课,然后上数学课。下午三点半放学。
(I go to school at 8:00 AM. We first have English class, then have Maths class. School finishes at 3:30 PM.)
Key Takeaway: Keep the directional words in mind: 上 (shàng) usually implies starting or going up (e.g. 上学, 上课), whereas 下 (xià) or 放 (fàng) implies finishing or stepping down (e.g. 下课, 放学).
3. Academic Subjects (学科)
You will often need to discuss which subjects you enjoy or find difficult:
Key Takeaway: Learn your 2–3 favourite subjects and 1 subject you dislike along with justified opinions to easily answer common speaking questions.
4. School Rules & Opinions (校规与看法)
AQA questions frequently ask about school uniform and regulations. You should be able to express what is mandatory, permitted, or forbidden.
Rules Vocabulary
• 校规 (xiàoguī) — School rules
• 规定 (guīdìng) — Rule / Regulation
• 准 / 允许 (zhǔn / yǔnxǔ) — To allow / Permitted
• 不准 (bù zhǔn) — Not allowed / Forbidden
• 可以 (kěyǐ) — Can / May
• 必须 (bìxū) — Must / Have to
Opinion & Description Adjectives
• 严格 (yángé) — Strict
• 友好 (yǒuhǎo) — Friendly
• 有意思 (yǒu yìsi) — Interesting
• 无聊 (wúliáo) — Boring
• 容易 (róngyì) — Easy
• 难 (nán) — Difficult
Key Takeaway: Pair rules with modal verbs to form strong, accurate sentences: 学生必须穿校服 (Students must wear school uniform) or 在教室里不准吃东西 (Eating is not allowed in the classroom).
5. Essential Grammar Patterns for this Chapter
Pattern 1: The Golden Time Rule (Word Order)
In English, we say: "I finish school at 4 PM."
In Chinese, Time always comes BEFORE the Action (Subject + Time + Verb):
• 我下午四点放学。 (Correct: Wǒ xiàwǔ sì diǎn fàngxué.)
• Do NOT say: 我放学在下午四点。
Pattern 2: Expressing Cause and Effect (因为...所以...)
In Chinese, conjunctions come in pairs. You use both 因为 (yīnwèi - because) and 所以 (suǒyǐ - therefore) in the same sentence:
因为中文老师很友好,所以我觉得中文很有意思。
(Because the Chinese teacher is friendly, [so] I think Chinese is very interesting.)
Pattern 3: Expressing Concession (虽然...但是...)
Just like cause and effect, "Although... but..." must be paired:
虽然数学很难,但是很有用。
(Although Maths is difficult, [but] it is very useful.)
Pattern 4: Expressing Interest (对...感兴趣)
To say you are interested in a subject, use the pattern: Subject + 对 (duì) + Topic + 感兴趣 (gǎnxìngqù).
我对历史很感兴趣。 (I am very interested in history.)
Pattern 5: Making Comparisons (A 比 B + Adjective)
Compare two subjects, facilities, or rules using 比 (bǐ):
科学比地理难。 (Science is harder than geography.)
体育馆比图书馆大。 (The gymnasium is bigger than the library.)
Key Takeaway: Using paired conjunctions (因为...所以..., 虽然...但是...) and comparative structures (比) is one of the best ways to access higher marks in Writing and Speaking.
6. Common Pitfalls & Examiner Warnings
Keep these frequent exam traps in mind during your revision:
• Time Placement Errors: Remember the basic rule: Subject + Time + Location + Verb. Never put the time phrase at the very end of the sentence.
• Character Confusion:
— Pay attention to 穿 (chuān - to wear). Do not confuse it with other characters.
— Do not confuse 做作业 (to do homework) with other homophones like 坐 (to sit) or 作. The verb for "to do" is 做.
— Do not confuse 课 (kè - lesson) with 果 (guǒ) or other visually similar characters.
• No Pinyin in Paper 4: In the Writing exam, you must write Chinese characters (Hanzi). Pinyin is not accepted for credit where characters are required.
• Using Multiple Time Frames: For Higher tier speaking and writing, do not just talk about your current daily routine. Mention a past experience (e.g. your primary school days) and a future intention to demonstrate a wide range of tenses.
7. Quick Knowledge Check
Try translating these key sentences into Chinese characters to test your understanding:
1. Students must wear school uniform.
学生必须穿校服。 (Xuéshēng bìxū chuān xiàofú.)
2. We are not allowed to eat in the classroom.
我们在教室里不准吃东西。 (Wǒmen zài jiàoshì lǐ bù zhǔn chī dōngxi.)
3. Because Maths is difficult, I don't like tests.
因为数学很难,所以我不喜欢考试。 (Yīnwèi shùxué hěn nán, suǒyǐ wǒ bù xǐhuan kǎoshì.)
4. Secondary school is bigger than primary school.
中学比小学大。 (Zhōngxué bǐ xiǎoxué dà.)
