Theme 2: Social Issues — Charity and Voluntary Work (慈善与义工)

Welcome to your study notes for AQA GCSE Chinese (Mandarin) 8673. This guide covers Theme 2: Local, national, international and global areas of interest, focusing on Social issues: charity/voluntary work. Whether you are aiming for Foundation or Higher tier, being able to discuss social problems and how we help others is a key part of your GCSE exams across all four skills: Listening, Speaking, Reading, and Writing.

Don't worry if talking about global and local issues feels daunting at first. We will break the vocabulary, grammar patterns, and exam strategies down step-by-step into clear, bite-sized pieces!

1. Essential Vocabulary: Foundation & Higher

To talk about charity and volunteering, you need a strong toolkit of core vocabulary. Let's look at the must-know words classified in the official AQA specification.

Core Foundation Vocabulary

义工 (yìgōng): Voluntary work / volunteer
Memory tip: 工 (gōng) means "work" (like in 工作 gōngzuò). 义 (yì) relates to justice/duty. Doing work out of goodwill is 义工.

社会 (shèhuì): Society
Example: 帮助社会 (bāngzhù shèhuì — to help society)

帮助 (bāngzhù): To help / assistance
Example: 我们应该帮助别人。(Wǒmen yīnggāi bāngzhù biérén. — We should help other people.)

钱 (qián): Money
Example: 捐钱 (juān qián — to donate money)

穷 (qióng): Poor
Memory tip: Notice the roof radical at the top. A poor person might only have a simple roof over their head.

富 (fù): Rich / wealthy
Memory tip: 富 (fù) looks packed and full of resources under a roof.

失业 (shīyè): Unemployed / to lose one's job
Breakdown: 失 (shī) means "to lose", and 业 (yè) refers to occupation/work. Losing your job = 失业.

Advanced & Higher Tier Vocabulary

贫困 (pínkùn): Poverty / poor
Usage: Used in formal writing or reading passages to describe impoverished conditions (e.g., 贫困地区 pínkùn dìqū — poor areas).

无家可归 (wú jiā kě guī): Homeless (literally: "without a home to return to")
Breakdown: 无 (wú) = without, 家 (jiā) = home, 可 (kě) = can, 归 (guī) = return. This four-character idiom (成语) will instantly boost your writing and speaking quality.

贫富差距 (pín fù chājù): Gap between rich and poor
Breakdown: 贫 (pín) = poor, 富 (fù) = rich, 差距 (chājù) = gap/difference.

Key Takeaway: Start by mastering 义工 (yìgōng), 帮助 (bāngzhù), and 社会 (shèhuì). Once you have these down, incorporate Higher-tier terms like 无家可归 (wú jiā kě guī) to achieve the top mark bands.

2. Key Grammar & Sentence Structures

Examiners look for clear reasoning, structured opinions, and accurate modal verbs when you discuss social problems. Here are the four essential grammar structures required by the AQA specification.

1. Modal Verbs for Proposing Solutions

When suggesting how to tackle social issues, use these modal verbs before the main action:

应该 (yīnggāi): Should
必须 (bìxū): Must
可以 (kěyǐ): Can / could

Pattern: Subject + 应该 / 必须 / 可以 + Action
Example: 我们应该帮助穷人。(Wǒmen yīnggāi bāngzhù qióngrén. — We should help poor people.)
Example: 政府必须帮助失业的人。(Zhèngfǔ bìxū bāngzhù shīyè de rén. — The government must help unemployed people.)

2. Connectives for Cause and Effect

To justify your opinions and gain marks for complex sentences, link your ideas using standard connectives:

因为 (yīnwèi) ... 所以 (suǒyǐ) ...: Because ... therefore ...
但是 (dànshì): But / however

Example: 因为社会上有很多穷人,所以我做义工。(Yīnwèi shèhuì shang yǒu hěn duō qióngrén, suǒyǐ wǒ zuò yìgōng. — Because there are many poor people in society, therefore I do voluntary work.)
Example: 我想捐钱,但是我没有很多钱。(Wǒ xiǎng juān qián, dànshì wǒ méiyǒu hěn duō qián. — I want to donate money, but I don't have much money.)

3. Showing Change with 越来越 (yuè lái yuè)

Use 越来越 + Adjective to describe conditions that are changing over time:

越来越大 (yuè lái yuè dà): Bigger and bigger
越来越多 (yuè lái yuè duō): More and more

Example: 贫富差距越来越大。(Pín fù chājù yuè lái yuè dà. — The gap between rich and poor is becoming bigger and bigger.)
Example: 无家可归的人越来越多。(Wú jiā kě guī de rén yuè lái yuè duō. — There are more and more homeless people.)

4. Expressing Opinions and Evaluating Pros/Cons

To access higher marks, you must give and justify points of view:

我认为 (wǒ rènwéi) / 我觉得 (wǒ juéde): I think / I feel
好处 (hǎochu): Advantage / benefit
坏处 (huàichu): Disadvantage / drawback

Example: 我认为做义工有很多好处。(Wǒ rènwéi zuò yìgōng yǒu hěn duō hǎochu. — I think doing voluntary work has many advantages.)

Key Takeaway: Elevate any simple statement by wrapping it in an opinion (我觉得...) and adding a reason with 因为...所以....

3. Applying This Topic to the Four Exam Papers

The AQA GCSE Chinese specification assesses this topic across four equally weighted papers (\(25\%\) each). Here is what you need to know for each component:

Paper 1: Listening & Paper 3: Reading

Foundation Tier: Listening lasts \(35\) minutes; Reading lasts \(45\) minutes.
Higher Tier: Listening lasts \(45\) minutes; Reading lasts \(1\) hour.
What to expect: Short announcements, interviews, or articles about young people doing voluntary work in local communities or charities supporting low-income families.

Paper 2: Speaking

Format: Role-play, Photo card, and General Conversation (Foundation: \(7\)–\(9\) minutes; Higher: \(10\)–\(12\) minutes).
Exam Technique: The mark scheme specifically rewards spontaneity. Do not sound like a robot reciting a rigid script. If asked about your volunteering experience, answer naturally using conversational starters like 我觉得 (wǒ juéde) or 对我来说 (duì wǒ lái shuō — for me).

Paper 4: Writing

Foundation Tier (\(1\) hour \(5\) minutes):
— Task 2: A short formal letter/email requiring approximately \(40\) characters.
— Task 3: A structured response requiring approximately \(75\) characters.

Higher Tier (\(1\) hour \(25\) minutes):
— Task 1: A structured writing task requiring approximately \(125\) characters.
— Task 2: An open-ended essay requiring approximately \(170\) characters.

Key Takeaway: Keep your target character count in mind during the Writing exam. Ensure you answer every bullet point clearly to secure maximum marks for Content and Quality of Language.

4. Common Traps & Pitfalls to Avoid

Examiners frequently note recurring mistakes on this topic. Watch out for these four common pitfalls:

1. The Number Trap in Listening (14 vs 40)

In passages discussing charity donations or volunteer hours, listeners often confuse similar sounds:

十四 (shísì) = \(14\)
四十 (sìshí) = \(40\)
Exam tip: Pay close attention to which syllable has the fourth (falling) tone. If the first syllable is , it is in the tens column (\(40\), \(45\), etc.).

2. Confusing Negatives (不 vs 没有)

Missing a negative flips the entire meaning of a sentence in Reading and Listening:

我们不需要更多义工。 (Wǒmen xūyào gèng duō yìgōng. — We do not need more volunteers.)
他没有捐钱。 (Tā méiyǒu juān qián. — He did not donate money.)
Exam tip: Double-check whether an action is affirmed or negated before answering multiple-choice questions.

3. Mixing Up "Local" and "Global" Contexts

In the Writing and Speaking exams, questions may ask specifically about your local area (本地区 / 我住的地方) or global issues (世界上 / 国际问题).

• If the prompt asks what you do to help in your local community, talk about helping neighbours, local clean-ups, or helping at a local school.
• If the prompt asks about global poverty (贫困), discuss international charity donations or worldwide issues.
Warning: Writing about international poverty when asked about your hometown can lead to lost content marks for being off-topic.

4. Over-rehearsing Without Answering the Actual Question

While preparing key phrases is essential, make sure you listen carefully to the examiner's specific question in Paper 2. Adapt your pre-learnt vocabulary about 义工 (yìgōng) directly to the question asked.

5. Quick Summary & Revision Checklist

Before moving on, check that you can confidently do the following:

✔ Recognise and write the core terms: 义工 (yìgōng), 社会 (shèhuì), 帮助 (bāngzhù), 穷 (qióng), 富 (fù), and 失业 (shīyè).
✔ Use Higher-tier vocabulary: 贫困 (pínkùn), 无家可归 (wú jiā kě guī), and 贫富差距 (pín fù chājù).
✔ Form suggestion sentences with modal verbs: 应该 (yīnggāi), 必须 (bìxū), and 可以 (kěyǐ).
✔ Connect ideas using 因为...所以... and describe ongoing social trends with 越来越....
✔ Distinguish clearly between local community aid and global social issues in writing tasks.
