In the CCEA listening exam, you need to identify instruments by their family and specific name:

• Brass: Trumpet, French Horn, Trombone, Tuba.

1. Monophonic (Monophony)

• What it means: Music where the parts move together, supporting one main musical idea.

b) Chordal / Homorhythmic: All parts move in the exact same rhythm, forming a vertical block of chords (like a traditional four-part hymn).

3. Polyphonic / Contrapuntal (Polyphony / Counterpoint)

4. Heterophonic (Heterophony)

• Missing the Technique: In listening questions, if asked to identify a sonority/timbre, name both the instrument and how it is played (e.g., "Violoncello playing arco" or "Trumpet with a mute").
• Irish Traditional Context: Always remember Heterophony when analyzing Irish Traditional extracts where multiple instruments ornament the main melody simultaneously.
