1. Vocal Resources and Classifications

In vocal music, voices are categorised by their range and characteristic timbre:

Soprano: The highest standard female voice.
Mezzo-Soprano: A female voice sitting comfortably between soprano and contralto.
Contralto / Alto: The lowest female singing voice, rich and dark in tone.

Definition: A single, unaccompanied melodic line with no harmonic support or secondary counter-melody whatsoever.
Everyday Analogy: One person speaking alone in an empty room.
Example: A solo flute playing a tune alone, or medieval plainchant sung by a solo monk.

2. Unison

Definition: All voices or instruments performing the exact same musical line at the same pitch or in octaves simultaneously without independent harmonic accompaniment.
Important Note: Even if 50 orchestral musicians are playing together, if they are all playing the identical melodic line (in unison or octaves), the texture is still a unison / monophonic texture, not polyphonic!

3. Homophonic Texture (Homophony)

Homophony occurs when the music is organised around chords or a single main melodic idea. Under the CCEA specification, there are two common types you must recognise:

Homorhythmic / Chordal Texture: All musical parts move together in essentially the same rhythm, creating blocks of vertical harmony. (Example: A traditional 4-part church hymn setting).
Melody with Accompaniment: A clear leading melodic line is prominently supported by subordinate accompaniment, such as broken chords, Alberti bass, or an orchestral backing. (Example: A pop singer supported by a strummed acoustic guitar, or a Classical piano sonata with the right hand playing the tune while the left hand plays chords).

4. Polyphonic / Contrapuntal Texture (Polyphony / Counterpoint)

Definition: Two or more independent melodic lines sounding simultaneously. Each line has its own melodic shape and rhythmic independence.
Everyday Analogy: Several people in a room having separate, equally important conversations at the same time.
Example: Renaissance choral motets, or Baroque contrapuntal works by J.S. Bach.

4. Fugue (Fugal)

A complex contrapuntal structure based on a central theme known as the subject. The subject is introduced successively in imitation across different voices (subject, answer, countersubject), followed by free contrapuntal sections called episodes, and sometimes overlapping entries called stretto.

5. Countermelody

A secondary melodic line played at the same time as the primary melody, designed to complement it while maintaining its own distinct shape.

6. Drone vs. Pedal Point

These two devices are frequently tested and easy to confuse:

Drone: A continuous, unchanging single pitch or open chord sounding continuously throughout a section or piece (common in traditional folk music, bagpipe music, and modal pieces).
Pedal (Pedal Point): A sustained or persistently repeated note (usually on the tonic or dominant pitch), typically in the bass (or inverted in an upper voice), while the harmonies change around or above it.

7. A Cappella

Vocal music performed strictly unaccompanied, without any instrumental backing.

The Error: Calling a solo vocal melody supported by piano chords "monophonic" because there is only one singer.
The Fix: As soon as there are accompanying chords or a bassline underneath, the texture is homophonic (melody with accompaniment). Monophonic means strictly unaccompanied.

Mistake 2: Conflating "Texture" with "Volume" or "Dynamics"
The Error: Writing "the texture gets louder" or "it has a thick dynamic".
