Think of it this way: if the physical environment is the stage, socio-economics is the play happening on top of it. When the stage shifts, the actors (us!) have to change how they live, work, and eat. Don’t worry if some of these terms seem big—we will break them down into simple pieces.

1. Impact on Habitation (Where We Live)

Habitation simply means the places where people live. Climate change makes some areas difficult or even impossible to inhabit.

Sea-Level Rise and Coastal Flooding: Many of the world’s largest cities (like Tokyo, New York, or Mumbai) are on the coast. As sea levels rise, these areas face "permanent flooding."
Example: Low-lying island nations or delta regions may lose land entirely, forcing people to become "climate migrants."

Extreme Weather Events: Increased frequency of tropical cyclones or wildfires (which you might study in the Hazardous Environments chapter) makes living in certain areas high-risk. People may choose to move away (out-migration) because they no longer feel safe.

Heat Stress in Urban Areas: In cities, the "urban heat island" effect combined with global warming can make temperatures dangerously high. This affects health and makes outdoor work nearly impossible during the day.

- The Elderly and Children: These groups are physically more vulnerable to heatwaves and diseases that spread more easily in a changing climate.
- Gender: In many cultures, women are responsible for gathering water and food. As these resources become scarce, women must travel further, which can impact their safety and education.
