Introduction to Research Design
Imagine you want to bake a complex cake for the first time. You wouldn’t just throw flour and eggs into a bowl and hope for the best, right? You would follow a recipe, check your ingredients, and maybe even do a "test bake." In Sociology, we do the same thing when we want to study society. This is called research design.
Research design is the step-by-step plan that sociologists use to gather and analyse information. It ensures that the research is organised, logical, and yields results that are useful. In this chapter, we will look at how researchers move from a simple idea to a finished report.
Step 1: Research Strategy, Questions, and Hypotheses
Before a researcher starts, they need to decide what they are looking for and how they will look for it. This is the research strategy.
Research Questions
A research question is a clear, focused question that the researcher wants to answer. For example: "How does social media use affect the study habits of teenagers?" It provides a general direction for the study.
Hypotheses
Sometimes, researchers want to be more specific. They create a hypothesis. A hypothesis is a formal, testable statement that predicts a relationship between two or more things. For example: "Students who spend more than three hours a day on social media will achieve lower grades than those who spend less than one hour."

Step 2: Operationalisation

Common Mistake: Forgetting to define your terms. If you don't operationalise your concepts clearly, your research might lack validity (it won't measure what you think it’s measuring) because different people might interpret the concept in different ways.
Step 3: Sampling – Choosing Your Participants
Sociologists usually can’t study every single person in a group (the target population). Instead, they select a smaller group to study, called a sample. To do this, they often need a sampling frame—a list of everyone in the target population (like a school register or a list of addresses).
Sampling Techniques
There are several ways to choose a sample. Some aim to be representative (a mini-version of the whole group), while others are used for practical reasons:
- Random Sampling: Everyone in the sampling frame has an equal chance of being picked (like pulling names out of a hat). This is fair but might accidentally miss certain groups.
- Stratified Random Sampling: The researcher divides the population into groups (e.g., by age or gender) and then picks a random sample from each group. This ensures the sample reflects the proportions of the real population.
- Quota Sampling: The researcher is told to find a specific number of people from certain groups (e.g., 20 men and 20 women). They keep asking people on the street until they fill their "quota."
- Snowball Sampling: Used when a group is hard to find (e.g., criminals). The researcher finds one person, gains their trust, and asks them to introduce them to others.
- Purposive Sampling: The researcher chooses specific people because they have characteristics that are relevant to the study.
- Opportunity Sampling: Simply using whoever is available at the time (e.g., students in a library). It’s quick but often not representative.

Step 4: The Pilot Study

Step 5: Conducting Research and Interpreting Results

Interpreting Results
After collecting the data, the researcher must make sense of it. This is called interpreting results.
• If the data is quantitative (numbers), they might look for patterns, trends, or correlations (e.g., \(80\%\) of students said they felt stressed).
• If the data is qualitative (words), they might look for common themes or deep meanings in what people said.
The final step is to write a report that explains whether the hypothesis was proven right or wrong, or what the answer to the research question was.
