Now, we are going to learn how to weave those reasons together into what the syllabus calls "strands of reasoning."
Think of an argument like a rope. A rope is much stronger when it is made of several different strands of fiber twisted together. If one fiber snaps, the rope still holds. Developing strands of reasoning works the same way—it makes your argument "break-proof"!
What is a "Strand of Reasoning"?
A strand of reasoning is a sequence of logical steps where one or more reasons lead toward a conclusion. In a complex argument, you will often have multiple strands working together to support your Main Conclusion (MC).
There are two main ways strands usually look:
- The Chain (Linear Reasoning): This is where one reason leads to another, creating a path. \(Reason \rightarrow Intermediate\ Conclusion \rightarrow Main\ Conclusion\).
- The Multistrand (Convergent Reasoning): This is where several independent reasons or "strands" all point to the same conclusion. Even if one strand is proven weak, the others still support the conclusion.

The "Table Leg" Analogy
Imagine your Main Conclusion is a tabletop. If you only have one reason (one strand) supporting it, your "table" is a pedestal table. It might stand, but it is easy to knock over. If that one reason is proven wrong, your whole argument collapses.
However, if you develop multiple strands of reasoning, it is like giving your table four strong legs. Even if an opponent "breaks" one leg by showing a reason is weak, the table stays standing because the other three legs (strands) are still holding it up.
How to Develop a Strand: Step-by-Step
Don't worry if this feels a bit abstract. You can build a strand by following these simple steps:
Step 1: Identify your Main Conclusion.
What is the one thing you want the reader to believe?
Example: We should switch to a four-day school week.
Step 2: Brainstorm different "angles" (Strands).
Think of different categories of reasons. For a school week, you might think of:
- Strand A: Financial benefits (saving electricity/bus costs).
- Strand B: Mental health (less stress for students and teachers).
- Strand C: Academic performance (better focus during the four days).
Step 3: Build the logic within each strand.
Take one angle and explain it fully.
Example for Strand B: "Students are currently reporting record levels of burnout. A three-day weekend allows for better rest. Therefore, a four-day week would improve student well-being."
Step 4: Connect them to the Conclusion.
Ensure that every strand you develop actually leads back to your Main Conclusion.

Common Mistakes to Avoid
- The "Jumbled Pile": This happens when a student lists five random facts that don't connect to each other. Remember, a strand must have a logical flow.
- Repeating the Same Point: Sometimes students think they have two strands, but they are just saying the same thing in two different ways. To avoid this, try to use different "areas" of support (e.g., one economic strand, one social strand, one ethical strand).
- The "Lone Ranger": Relying on only one single reason. If that reason is challenged, you have no argument left!
Why This Matters for Your Exam
In Paper 4, Question 4, you are required to construct a "substantial reasoned argument." The examiners aren't just looking for a list of points; they are looking for developed strands.
If you can show that your conclusion is supported by an economic strand \(S_1\), a safety strand \(S_2\), and an environmental strand \(S_3\), your argument becomes much more persuasive and "A-grade" quality.
