Introduction: The "Glue" of an Argument

Welcome! In previous chapters, you learned how to take an argument apart to see how it’s built (Analysis) and how to spot "logical landmines" called fallacies. But what if an argument doesn't have a specific fallacy like a "Straw Man," yet it still feels... unconvincing?

This is where we look for weaknesses in reasoning. Think of an argument like a bridge. Even if the bridge isn't missing a whole section (a fallacy), it might have rusty bolts, shaky pillars, or be built on soft sand. In this chapter, we will learn how to spot these "rusty bolts" and, more importantly, assess how likely they are to make the whole bridge collapse.

Note: This chapter focuses on Section 6.2.2 (2028 Syllabus) and Section 7.2 (2027 Syllabus). We aren't looking for "cheating" (fallacies); we are looking for how well the argument actually holds together.


1. Assessing Support: How Strong is the Connection?

The most common weakness in reasoning is a lack of support. This happens when the reasons provided, even if they are true, don't quite "reach" the conclusion. There is a "gap" between what we know and what the author wants us to believe.

The "Jump" to a Conclusion

Sometimes an author provides a reason that supports a conclusion, but not the specific conclusion they have written.
Example: "The new library has 50% more books than the old one. Therefore, students will definitely get better exam grades this year."
The Weakness: While more books are good, they don't automatically guarantee better grades. There is a lack of support because many other factors (study habits, teaching quality) are ignored.

When assessing support, ask yourself: "If I accept these reasons as true, how certain is the conclusion?"

  • Strong support: The conclusion is almost certain to follow.
  • Weak support: The conclusion is just one of many possibilities.


2. Consistency: Is the Argument Fighting Itself?

An argument must be consistent. This means the different parts of the reasoning should work together, not against each other. If an author contradicts themselves, the reasoning is weakened because we no longer know which part to believe.

Internal Inconsistency

This happens when one part of an argument makes a claim that another part of the same argument denies.
Example: "We must protect the absolute right to free speech for everyone. However, we should ban people from saying things that are unpopular."
The Weakness: You cannot support "absolute" free speech while also supporting a "ban" on specific types of speech. These two claims are inconsistent.

Quick Review: An argument is like a team. If the players (reasons) are running in opposite directions, the team (argument) won't reach the goal (conclusion).


3. Reliance: What is the Argument "Leaning" On?

Every argument relies on certain foundations. If those foundations are shaky, the reasoning is weak. In Thinking Skills, we look at what the reasoning relies on to be true.

Reliance on Unstated Assumptions

Arguments often rely on unstated assumptions (cross-reference: see the chapter on "Identify unstated assumptions"). If the argument's success depends entirely on an assumption that might be false, the reasoning is weak.
Example: "We should move all our shop's business online to increase profits."
The Weakness: This relies on the assumption that the shop's current customers are willing and able to shop online. If they aren't, the argument falls apart.

Reliance on a Single Factor

Sometimes an argument is weak because it relies solely on one reason while ignoring a much bigger picture. This is often called over-simplification. If the conclusion depends on only one factor being true, the reasoning is "brittle" (easily broken).


4. Responding to Counter-Positions

A "counter-position" is a claim that goes against the author's main conclusion. A strong argument should acknowledge and deal with these.

Important Syllabus Note: It is not a weakness for an argument to be one-sided. However, an argument is weakened if it fails to address a very obvious and strong counter-position that the reader is likely to think of.

How to assess the impact:

  • If an author ignores a minor counter-argument, the impact is low.
  • If an author ignores the most important objection to their view, the impact is high, and the reasoning is significantly weakened.

5. Assessing the Impact: How Bad is the Weakness?

In your exam (especially Paper 2 and Paper 4), you won't just be asked to find a weakness; you will be asked to assess its impact. This means deciding how much the weakness actually hurts the argument.

Use these "levels of impact" to help you structure your answers:

  1. Fatal Weakness: The weakness is so bad that the conclusion has no support at all. The argument "collapses."
  2. Significant Weakness: The weakness makes the conclusion much less likely to be true, but there is still some minor support left.
  3. Minor Weakness: The weakness is there, but the conclusion is still probably true because the other reasons are strong.

Don't worry if this seems tricky! Assessing impact is a judgment call. As long as you can explain why the weakness makes the conclusion less certain, you are doing great.


Common Mistakes to Avoid

1. Disagreeing is not a Weakness: Just because you think the author is wrong doesn't mean their reasoning is weak. You must judge the argument based on how the reasons support the conclusion, not based on your own opinion.

2. Confusing Weakness with Fallacies: Fallacies (like Ad Hominem) are specific "illegal moves." Weaknesses (like poor support) are just "poor quality moves." Try to use the correct terminology from the syllabus whenever possible.

3. Forgetting the Conclusion: A weakness is only a weakness if it affects the Main Conclusion. If a tiny part of the background information is inconsistent but it doesn't change the final result, the impact is very low.


Quick Review: The Checklist

When looking for weaknesses in reasoning, ask yourself:

  • Support: Is there a big "gap" between the reasons and the conclusion?
  • Consistency: Does the author contradict themselves?
  • Reliance: Does the argument "lean" too heavily on a risky assumption?
  • Counter-positions: Has the author ignored a huge "elephant in the room" (a major objection)?
  • Impact: Does this weakness make the conclusion slightly doubtful or completely unbelievable?
