Introduction to Analysing Qualitative Findings

Welcome to one of the most exciting parts of the Higher Level (HL) Psychology course! While Standard Level students focus primarily on existing research, you are learning how to behave like a real psychologist by analysing raw data and synthesizing multiple sources.

In your HL-only Paper 3, you will be given a "dossier" of 4–6 unseen sources (like interview transcripts, observation notes, or summaries of findings). Your job is to make sense of these pieces of a puzzle. This chapter focuses on how to handle qualitative findings—the rich, word-based data—and how to pull different sources together to reach a big-picture conclusion.

1. What is Qualitative Analysis?

Qualitative research isn't about counting how many people did something; it's about understanding why they did it and what it felt like. When we analyse qualitative findings, we are looking for patterns, meanings, and "themes" in the participants' own words or actions.

Key Characteristics of Qualitative Findings:

  • Rich and Descriptive: It provides "thick description" of human experience.
  • Subjective: It focuses on the perspective of the individual (one of our six key concepts).
  • Context-Bound: The findings are often specific to a certain time, place, or culture.

Analogy: If quantitative data is a "multiple choice" test (easy to count), qualitative data is an "essay" (requires reading between the lines to find the main points).

2. How to Interpret Qualitative Findings

When you are presented with a source like an interview transcript or a focus group summary, follow these steps to interpret the findings effectively:

Step 1: Identify Recurring Ideas (Themes)

Look for ideas that pop up multiple times across the text. For example, if three different participants in a health and well-being study mention "feeling lonely during recovery," social isolation becomes a key finding.

Step 2: Look for Highlighting Quotations

In qualitative sources, researchers often use direct quotes to support their claims. When you see these, ask: "Does this quote actually prove the researcher's point, or is there another way to look at it?"

Step 3: Consider the Context

Remember the four contexts: Health and well-being, human development, human relationships, and learning and cognition. If a study is about learning, a finding about "anxiety" should be interpreted through the lens of how it affects a student's ability to process information.

Quick Review: Qualitative analysis is about finding the "story" behind the data by identifying themes and looking closely at the participants' unique perspectives.

3. Research Considerations in Qualitative Data

In Paper 3, you are often asked to evaluate the findings. Use these specific qualitative "quality checks":

  • Credibility: Do the findings reflect the reality of the participants? We check this through member reflection (asking participants if the researcher got it right) or triangulation (comparing different sources).
  • Reflexivity: Did the researcher’s own bias or perspective influence how they interpreted the words? For example, a researcher who is very tech-savvy might interpret a participant's comments about social media more positively than they intended.
  • Transferability: Can these findings be applied to another group or setting? (Similar to generalizability, but for qualitative research).

4. Synthesizing Across Sources

This is a high-level skill! Synthesis means taking information from Source A, Source B, and Source C and combining them to form a single, coherent argument. It’s not just listing what each source says—it’s showing how they "talk" to each other.

How to Synthesize Like a Pro:

When looking at the 4–6 sources in your exam, ask yourself these questions:

  1. Agreement: Do multiple sources point to the same conclusion? (e.g., Source 1 says technology harms sleep, and Source 3 shows a graph where tech users sleep less).
  2. Contradiction: Does Source 2 say something that challenges Source 1? (e.g., Source 1 claims motivation is internal, but Source 2 shows that rewards significantly change behaviour).
  3. Complementing: Does one source explain why another source found what it did? (e.g., A quantitative survey shows 80% of people are stressed, and a qualitative interview source explains that the stress comes from workplace responsibility).

Did you know? Synthesis is what helps psychologists create theories. One study is just a data point; synthesis is the "big picture."

5. Using the Six Concepts to Analyse Findings

The IB requires you to use the six concepts to frame your analysis. Here is how they apply to qualitative findings:

  • Bias: Did the researcher’s expectations lead them to "hear" what they wanted to hear in the interview?
  • Causality: Be careful! Qualitative data rarely proves causality. It shows correlations or experiences, but it's hard to say "X caused Y" based just on an interview.
  • Change: Do the sources show a change in behaviour over time (e.g., in a longitudinal observation)?
  • Measurement: How did the researcher "measure" a feeling? In qualitative research, this is often done through coding or thematic analysis.
  • Perspective: This is the heart of qualitative work. Whose voice is being heard? Are some voices (like minority groups) missing?
  • Responsibility: Consider the ethical responsibility of the researcher. If the findings reveal sensitive information about human relationships, how is the data protected?
