I. Defining the Concepts: Stress, Arousal, and Anxiety

Before we tackle how to cope, we need precise definitions for these terms, as they are often confused in everyday conversation.

A. Stress: The Imbalance of Demand

In Sports Psychology, stress is defined as an imbalance between the demands placed on an athlete and their ability to respond effectively, where failure to meet the demand has important consequences.

  • The Stressor: The external or internal demand that causes stress (e.g., a penalty kick, the noise of the crowd, self-imposed pressure).
  • The Stress Response: The individual’s reaction to the stressor (e.g., increased heart rate, muscle tension, negative thoughts).

  • Planning and Preparation: Developing tactical strategies and pre-performance routines.
  • Goal Setting: Setting realistic process and performance goals rather than focusing solely on outcome.
  • Time Management: Balancing training loads and recovery periods.
  • Information Seeking: Analyzing opposition footage to build effective counter-tactics.
B. Emotion-Focused Coping (Regulating the Response)

Aims to regulate the emotional and physiological response to the stressor. Essential when the situation is uncontrollable (e.g., adverse weather, referee decisions, sudden injury).

  • Relaxation Techniques: Progressive muscular relaxation and deep diaphragmatic breathing to lower somatic anxiety.
