In this chapter, we are going to learn how to be "Data Detectives" by designing our own surveys and organizing the information we find!
Part 1: Designing Your Survey
Designing a survey is like planning a journey. Before you start, you need to know where you are going and how you will get there. Don't worry if it seems like a lot of steps—once you start, it’s just like asking questions and listening to stories!
1. The "Big Question" (The Aim)
Every survey starts with a question you want to answer. A good survey question should be clear and focused. For example, instead of asking "Tell me about food," you might ask, "Which of these four fruits is your favorite?"
2. Avoiding Bias
The IB syllabus reminds us to collect data without bias. Bias is when the survey question tries to "nudge" people toward a certain answer.
Biased: "Don't you agree that chocolate is the best flavor?" (This tells people what to think!)
Unbiased: "What is your favorite ice cream flavor?" (This lets people decide for themselves!)
3. Choosing Your Audience
Who are you going to ask? If you want to know about the favorite games of Phase 3 students, you shouldn't only ask the teachers! This group of people is called your sample.
4. Open vs. Closed Questions
When you design your survey, you have two main choices:
Closed Questions: These give people a set list of answers to choose from (like Multiple Choice). These are much easier to organize later.
