N1 内容理解(短文): Four Texts at Full Density
Four ~200-character texts, one question each — but at N1 the texts are written for native adults: business notifications with legal shading, essay fragments with double negatives, explanatory prose with nominalized spines. Nothing about the method changes; everything about the LANGUAGE does. This chapter tunes your short-text reading to N1 register and catalogs the constructions that decide answers.
1. The Constructions That Carry Answers
| Construction | Decoding |
|---|---|
| 〜ないとは言えない/〜なくはない | partial YES ("can't say it isn't") — options that read it as NO die |
| 〜ざるを得ない | reluctant conclusion — the writer accepts it |
| 〜とは限らない | partial NO (not always) |
| 〜に越したことはない | ideal but not required — modality! |
| 〜を余儀なくされた | forced (external cause) — "chose to" options die |
| 〜かねる | polite refusal — 対応いたしかねます = we will NOT |
| 〜ないまでも | the lesser standard is still expected |
| 〜はさておき | topic parked — questions about it are decoys |
The N1 short-text question is often nothing MORE than one of these: present a 〜かねます notice, ask "what will the company do?" — and the answer hinges on hearing the refusal inside the politeness.
2. Worked Text 1: The Business Notification
Walkthrough: ① dies at 営業を終了 (permanent, not 一時休業) and the stated cause 老朽化; ② dies at 残存期間に応じて (proportional, not 全額); ④ inverts 来月末をもって終了. Three keigo-armored facts, three modality checks — the whole N1 short-text genre in one notice.
3. Worked Text 2: The Essay Fragment
Question:
Walkthrough: the opening concedes (悪いとは言わない — partial yes to convenience!), だが pivots, ことなしに… ① overshoots the concession — the writer explicitly did NOT call convenience evil. N1's first sentence is a landmine for overreaders.
4. Method Tuning for N1
- Type-spot (通知? 評論の断片?) and classify the question.
- Full read, flagging modality armor (かねます, に応じて, をもって) in notices; concession/pivot/claim joints in essays.
- Decode double negatives ON THE SPOT — rewrite ないとは言えない as "partly yes" in your head before options.
- Eliminate on modality and scope; the noun-content of options is usually all true-ish.
Pace: ~2.5 minutes each. These four are the warm-up for the reading marathon — bank them efficiently, because 中文 and 長文 need every spare minute.
Summary & Key Takeaways
- N1 短文 = native-register notices and essay fragments; answers hinge on modality armor and double negatives.
- Decode instantly: いたしかねます=won't, に応じて=proportionally, をもって=as of, ないとは言えない=partly yes, ことなしに〜ない=requires.
- Efficiency here funds the longer passages downstream.
