N2 文章の文法: Steering Formal Prose
At N2, the cloze passage (5 items) reads like a magazine column or light editorial: written-style grammar (である調 possible), layered connectors, and blanks that test stance — does the writer concede, insist, or pivot here? The mechanical skills from N3 carry over; this chapter adds the N2 connector arsenal, stance-marking sentence enders, and a worked passage in the exam's register.
1. The N2 Connector Arsenal

2. Stance Enders: How the Writer Signs Each Sentence
N2 cloze blanks frequently sit at sentence ends, testing which stance the flow demands:

Flow logic: a paragraph piling evidence ends in と考えられる; a personal essay's climax takes のではないだろうか; a trend description takes つつある; a moral takes ものだ／てはならない. The blank's job is set by its paragraph's job.
3. Cohesion at Essay Scale
- Topic chains with contrast: 〜はというと re-opens a contrasted topic (父はというと…); 一方（で）pivots between two tracked subjects. Cloze answers must keep BOTH threads alive.
- こそ for pinpointing: 今年こそ, これこそが — blanks before が/を asking for emphasis often want こそ.
- Formal reference: この点, その結果, これに対して — noun-fied references replace bare それ; match the noun to the antecedent's type (a point? a result? a contrast?).
- である-register discipline: a である essay rejects です/ます options mid-flow (except inside quotes). Register mismatch = instant elimination, same as N3 but now bidirectional.
4. Worked Passage (Exam Simulation)
「若者の読書離れ」が言われて久しい。調査によると、一か月に一冊も本を読まない大学生は半数を超えるそうだ。【１】、この数字だけを見て、若者が文字を読まなくなったと結論づけるのは早計であろう。
実際には、若者はスマートフォンで大量の文字を読んでいる。ニュースやエッセイ、友人との長いやり取り。読む「量」は、【２】減っていないのである。変わったのは量ではなく、読み方なのだ。
【３】、長い文章にじっくり向き合う体力は、確かに衰え【４】のかもしれない。だとすれば、必要なのは「本を読め」という説教ではなく、長い文章の面白さを再発見させる工夫ではないだろうか。
