N3 概要理解: Listening for the Big Picture (New at N3!)
Meet the question type that debuts at N3: 概要理解（がいようりかい, comprehension of general outline — 3 items）. Everything about it inverts your training so far: you hear a monologue (a teacher's talk, radio segment, store announcement, mini-lecture), nothing is printed, and the question is revealed only AFTER the audio ends — so selective listening is impossible. You must listen for the shape of the whole: what is this person talking about, and what do they most want to say? This chapter teaches gist-listening as a technique, not a talent.
1. The Format, Exactly
- Setup line only: ラジオで女の人が話しています。(A woman is talking on the radio.) — no question yet!
- Monologue plays (~1 minute).
- THEN the question: 女の人は何について話していますか。("What is she talking about?") or 女の人が一番言いたいことは何ですか。("What does she most want to say?")
- Four options — spoken aloud, not printed. You hold everything in your head.
Because you can't know the question in advance, the only strategy is to build a running summary. The good news: JLPT monologues are built from the same architecture every time.
2. The Monologue Architecture
Nearly every 概要理解 monologue follows the "setup → turn → point" arc — the audio version of the essay structure you mastered in reading:

The one-sentence-summary habit: as you listen, keep updating a single mental sentence: "she's saying that ______." Force it into words at the turn, refine at the end. When the question finally arrives, you already hold the answer in your own words — which matters, because…
3. The Echo Trap (概要理解's Signature)
Wrong options quote vivid words from the audio verbatim; the correct option paraphrases the point in fresh words. This is deliberate: they're testing whether you caught meaning or just sounds. So the working rule: an option that repeats the monologue's most memorable phrase is suspicious; an option that says the same THING differently is promising. Your own-words summary is immune to the echo trap — options are judged against it, not against remembered sound-bites.

ラジオで男の人が話しています。
男：みなさん、休みの日は何をしていますか。「疲れているから、家でゴロゴロしている」という人が多いかもしれません。私も昔はそうでした。でも、あるとき医者に言われたんです。疲れをとるには、何もしないより、軽く体を動かすほうがいいと。例えば、近所を20分歩くだけでもいいそうです。実際にやってみると、月曜日の朝の体が全然違います。疲れているときこそ、少しだけ外に出てみてください。
男の人が一番言いたいことは何ですか。
① 休みの日は家でゆっくり休んだほうがいい

Walkthrough: Setup = the common view ("rest at home when tired" — option ① is exactly this: the rejected setup!). Turn = でも、医者に言われた. Point = 軽く体を動かすほうがいい, restated at the end as 外に出てみてください. Answer ②. ③ elevates a story detail into advice; ④ hardens the "for example, 20 minutes" illustration into an obligation (example ≠ rule — a classic). Notice how the architecture predicted everything: setup-as-wrong-option, point-after-でも, example-as-distractor.
5. The Two Question Flavors
- 何について話していますか (topic): wants the umbrella that covers the WHOLE talk. Options are candidate topics at different widths — too narrow (one example), too wide (vaguely related), wrong focus, and correct. Choose the one every paragraph fits under.
- 一番言いたいこと (main point): wants the claim/recommendation. It's the post-turn sentence, usually restated at the end, usually carrying おすすめ/〜てください/大切だ energy.
6. Building the Gist Muscle
- Daily one-minute summaries: listen to any short Japanese monologue (podcast intro, news brief, YouTube opening), pause, and say ONE Japanese sentence: 「この人は〜と言いたい」. Thirty days of this transforms 概要理解.
- Don't panic over unknown words — gist questions are answerable at 70% comprehension. The architecture words (でも, 実は, 大切なのは, ぜひ) are all N4-level; they carry the structure that carries the answer.
- Hold the point, drop the rest. Working memory is finite; after the turn, actively let go of setup details to protect the point-sentence until the options play.
- Options are audio-only: as each plays, compare it to your summary sentence and score it ○△✗ on paper — by option 4 your marks decide without replaying memory.
