N5 Grammar Course, Part 1: Particles, Sentences & Choices
Welcome to the N5 grammar catalog! The complete N5 exam list is about 86 grammar points. This chapter and the next split them into two teachable halves: here, Part A — the particle system, noun-sentence machinery, comparisons, desires and offers (≈40 points); in 文の文法2, Part B — everything built on verb forms (て-form, ない-form, た-form, plain form) plus the sentence-scramble technique.
How the exam tests this: 問題1(文法形式の判断, 9 items)gives a sentence with a blank and 4 grammar options — usually particles or near-identical endings. Every point below is presented with the exact contrast the exam draws. You know the basics from Basic Japanese; now we go to exam depth.
1. The Copula Family (Noun & な-Adjective Sentences)
| Pattern | Meaning | Example |
|---|---|---|
| だ/です | is (plain / polite) | わたしは学生です。/これは本だ。 |
| じゃない/ではない(+です) | is not | それはわたしのかばんじゃないです。 |
| でした/じゃありませんでした | was / was not | きのうは休みでした。 |
| か | question marker | あの人はだれですか。 |
| ~か~(か) | A or B | コーヒーか紅茶か、どちらがいいですか。 |
| ~んです/~のです | explanatory "it's that…" | 頭が痛いんです。(explaining why you look unwell) |
~んです is the one beginners underuse: it wraps a statement as an explanation or background. どうしたんですか (What's wrong?) →バスが来なかったんです (It's that the bus didn't come). In the exam, a どうして question in the text is a strong signal that 〜んです belongs in the blank.
2. The Particle System — Exam Depth
You know the core jobs from Basic Japanese. 問題1 tests the fine edges between them:
| Particle | Exam-tested jobs | Example |
|---|---|---|
| は | topic; contrast; after negatives | 魚は好きですが、肉は食べません。 |
| が | subject of existence/description; question-word subject; likes & skills; "but" joining clauses | だれが来ましたか。/すみませんが、今何時ですか。 |
| を | direct object; place you leave or move through | パンを食べます。/7時にうちを出ます。/公園を散歩します。 |
| に | time; destination; existence place; receiver; per-unit | 7時に起きます。
| も | also; (with numbers) as many as; neither (+neg.) | 弟も学生です。/十時間も寝ました。 |
| から | from (place/time); because | 九時から五時まで働きます。/忙しいですから、行きません。 |
| まで | until, as far as | 駅まで歩きます。 |
| だけ | only | 朝はコーヒーだけ飲みます。 |
| ぐらい/くらい | about (amount/duration) | 駅まで十分ぐらいかかります。 |
| ね/よ/なあ | agreement / new info / exclamation | いい天気ですね。/おいしいですよ。/きれいだなあ。 |
The three contrasts the exam never retires
- に vs で (place): being-verbs take に (います・あります・住んでいます), doing-verbs take で. 「公園( )子どもがいます」→ に; 「公園( )遊びます」→ で.
- と vs や: と = the complete list; や = examples from a longer list, often with など. If the sentence implies "and so on," や wins.
- は vs が: new information, question-word subjects, and 好き/上手/わかる/ある/いる targets take が; known topics and contrasts take は. (Full rules in your Basic Japanese particle chapters — they remain the single best investment for 問題1.)
Two を jobs beginners miss
Besides direct objects, を marks leaving a place (うちを出る, 電車を降りる, 大学を出る=graduate) and moving through a place (公園を散歩する, 橋を渡る, 道を歩く). 「橋( )渡って、すぐ左です」→ を. Blank-before-movement-verb is a classic.
3. Existence, Possession & Desire
| Pattern | Meaning | Example |
|---|---|---|
| (場所に)~があります | there is (thing); I have | 駅の前に銀行があります。/時間がありません。 |
| (場所に)~がいます | there is (person/animal) | 教室に学生がいます。 |
| ~が欲しい(ほしい) | want (a thing) — conjugates as い-adj. | 新しいパソコンが欲しいです。 |
| ~たい | want to (do) — verb stem+たい, conjugates as い-adj. | 日本へ行きたいです。/何も食べたくないです。 |
Note the particle: both desire patterns prefer が (水が飲みたい), and both conjugate like い-adjectives: 欲しくない, 行きたかった, 行きたくなかった. The exam offers 欲しいでした ✗ as bait — the same い-adjective rule from Pre-N5 applies!
4. Comparisons & Superlatives
| Pattern | Meaning | Example |
|---|---|---|
| AはBより~ | A is more ~ than B | 飛行機は電車より速いです。 |
| BよりAのほうが~ | A is more ~ than B (A emphasized) | 電車より飛行機のほうが速いです。 |
| AとBと、どちらが~ | which of A and B is more ~? | コーヒーと紅茶と、どちらが好きですか。 |
| ~のほうが~ | the ~ one is more ~ (answer form) | コーヒーのほうが好きです。 |
| ~の中で…がいちばん~ | superlative within a group | 果物の中でりんごがいちばん好きです。 |
| いちばん | the most | クラスでいちばん背が高い人はだれですか。 |
Reading the direction correctly is the whole game: in XよりYのほうが, Y wins. 「犬より猫のほうが好きです」= I prefer cats. The exam swaps the order to test whether you track the winner or just the first-mentioned noun.
5. Choices, Changes & Becoming
| Pattern | Meaning | Example |
|---|---|---|
| ~にします | decide on ~ (choosing) | わたしはうどんにします。 |
| ~になります | become (noun/な-adj.) | 医者になりたいです。/町がきれいになりました。 |
| ~くなります | become (い-adj.) | だんだん寒くなります。 |
| ~すぎます | too much (stem+すぎる) | この靴は大きすぎます。/食べすぎました。 |
| ~かた(~方) | how to ~ (stem+方) | この漢字の読み方を教えてください。 |
Contrast to lock in: します chooses, なります becomes. 「へやを暖かくします」(I make it warm — my action) vs 「へやが暖かくなります」(it gets warm — change happens). Note the particle flip を/が riding along.
6. Invitations, Offers & Suggestions
| Pattern | Meaning | Example |
|---|---|---|
| ~ませんか | won't you ~? (invitation) | いっしょに昼ごはんを食べませんか。 |
| ~ましょう | let's ~ | ええ、食べましょう。 |
| ~ましょうか | shall I ~? (offering help) | 荷物を持ちましょうか。 |
| ~はどうですか | how about ~? | お茶はどうですか。 |
| ~をください | please give me ~ | りんごを三つください。 |
| お/ご~ | politeness prefix | お名前/お仕事/ご家族 |
The trio ませんか→ましょう→ましょうか is a conversation in itself: invite → agree → offer. In listening (発話表現・即時応答) these carry entire questions, so drill the melody now: 手伝いましょうか。— ありがとうございます、おねがいします。
7. Question-Word Grammar
どんな+noun (what kind of), どうして/なぜ (why — expect 〜から in the answer), どうやって (by what means — expect で), どのぐらい (how long/much — expect ぐらい), 何か/だれか (something/someone) vs 何も/だれも+negative (nothing/no one): 「教室にだれ( )いません」→ も. The か/も pairing on question words is a reliable 問題1 item.
8. How the Exam Tests This — Worked Examples
A「コーヒー( )紅茶と、どちらが好きですか。」B「紅茶のほうが好きです。」
① と ② や ③ か ④ の → ①: the fixed comparison frame AとBと、どちら.
妹はピアノ( )上手です。
① を ② が ③ に ④ で → ②: skills take が (上手/下手/好き/わかる).
すみません、この漢字の読み( )を教えてください。
① こと ② の ③ 方 ④ 時 → ③: stem+方 = "how to read".
Strategy checklist
- Scan the frame first: fixed patterns (〜と、どちら / 〜の中で〜がいちばん / 〜より〜のほうが) answer themselves once recognized.
- Particle blanks: ask the word's job (time? place-of-being? place-of-action? object? leaving?) — then map job → particle mechanically.
- Ending agreement: 何も/だれも need a negative ending; 欲しい/たい conjugate as い-adjectives.
- 9 items ≈ 6–7 minutes. Bank particle questions fast, save thought for Part B patterns (next chapter).
Summary & Key Takeaways
- Part A ≈ 40 of N5's 86 grammar points: copula family (+〜んです explanation), the full particle system, existence/desire, comparisons, become/decide, invitations/offers, question-word grammar.
- Evergreen contrasts: に vs で, と vs や, は vs が, を of leaving/passing, します vs なります, もう vs まだ (coming in Part B).
- Comparison frames have fixed shapes — recognize the frame, read the direction (のほうが marks the winner).
- 欲しい and たい conjugate like い-adjectives and prefer が.
- Next: Part B — the て/ない/た/plain-form engine room, where the other half of the catalog lives.
