1. Social Challenges: Designing for People

Designers have a big responsibility to the "Social" side of the world. This means thinking about how products affect humans and their communities.

Respect for Different Groups

Good design is inclusive. This means respecting different social, ethnic, and economic groups.
Social/Ethnic: Designers must ensure products do not cause offence through symbols, colours, or names that might be sensitive in different cultures.
Economic: Not everyone has the same amount of money. Designers need to create products for different price points so that people from all economic backgrounds can access what they need.

Fair Trade

Fair Trade is a movement that makes sure workers in developing countries get a fair wage and have safe working conditions.

A Life Cycle Analysis is a "Cradle to Grave" look at a product's impact on the environment. There are five main stages you need to know:

1. Raw Material Extraction: Getting the wood, oil, or metal from the Earth. (How much energy is used? Does it destroy habitats?)
2. Manufacture: Making the product in a factory. (Does it create pollution?)
3. Transportation: Moving the product to shops. (How much \( CO_2 \) is released by ships or lorries?)
4. Use: How the product performs. (Does it need batteries or electricity?)
5. Disposal: What happens when it's finished with? (Does it go to a landfill or get recycled?)

Green Designs: Recycling and Reusing

"Green Design" focuses on using materials and energy in a way that does the least damage possible. Two big parts of this are:
Recycling: Taking a product at the end of its life, breaking it down into raw materials, and making something new. (e.g., melting down an aluminium can to make a new one).
Reusing: Using a product again for the same purpose, or a new one, without breaking it down. This is even better than recycling because it uses less energy! (e.g., refilling a glass milk bottle).

Carbon Offsetting

Sometimes, creating \( CO_2 \) is unavoidable. Carbon Offsetting is when a company "balances out" the carbon they release by doing something good for the environment elsewhere, like planting trees or investing in renewable energy.

Designers must choose materials that are fit for purpose but also fit the budget.
• If the material is too expensive, the product will be too pricey for customers to buy.
• If it's too cheap, it might break quickly (this is bad for the environment and the brand's reputation).

Manufacturing Capability

A designer must understand what the factory is actually capable of making.
• Do they have the right machinery?
• Do the workers have the right skills?
Efficiency: Can the product be made quickly and with very little waste? Minimising waste saves money and helps the environment.
