Introduction to Rural Settlements Fieldwork

This investigation is part of Paper 3 (Topic 7). You will be asked questions about the work you did (or should have done) during your own field trip. Stage 1: Framing Questions and Hypotheses
Before you left school, you needed a plan. This usually starts with a hypothesis—a statement that you can test to see if it is true or false.
Common hypotheses for rural fieldwork include:
- "The quality of the environment is higher in the center of the village than on the edges."
- "Rural services (like shops and post offices) have declined due to the growth of nearby towns."

Primary Data Collection (What you did yourself)
1. Land-Use Mapping: Walking through the settlement and marking on a map what each building is used for (e.g., residential, commercial, or open space). This helps you see if services are grouped together.
2. Environmental Quality Survey (EQS): You might have given different parts of the village a score from -3 to +3 based on things like litter, noise, and greenery. This is subjective (based on your opinion), but it turns feelings into numbers.
3. Questionnaires: Asking residents or visitors their opinions on village life. This provides qualitative data about how people feel.
Secondary Data (The "Desktop" Research)
The Edexcel syllabus specifically requires you to use Census data (from the Office for National Statistics - ONS). You might use this to look at the age of the population or employment types in your village. You also need one other secondary source, such as old OS maps to see how the village has grown over time, or local news articles about service closures.
Sampling Strategies
You can't talk to everyone or measure every house, so you use sampling:
- Random: Choosing locations or people by pure chance (e.g., using a random number generator).
- Systematic: Choosing at regular intervals (e.g., every 5th house or every 100 meters).
- Stratified: Dividing the area into groups (e.g., "old village" vs. "new housing estate") and making sure you sample from both.
Stage 3: Processing and Presenting Data
Once you have your numbers, you need to make them easy to read. Geography students use several types of visual aids:
- Proportional Symbols: Drawing circles on a map where the size of the circle represents a value (like the number of shops).
- Choropleth Maps: Shading areas in different colors to show density (e.g., darker green for areas with more trees).
- Bivariate Data (Scatter Plots): Using a graph to see if two things are linked, like "Distance from the village center" vs "Environmental Quality Score".
- GIS (Geographic Information Systems): Using digital maps to layer your data over satellite images or existing maps.

In this stage, you are looking for anomalies—results that don't fit the pattern. For example, a beautifully kept garden in a generally run-down area is an anomaly.
Stage 5: Drawing Evidenced Conclusions
Your conclusion should refer directly back to your original hypothesis. You must use evidence (your data) to support your final judgement.
"In conclusion, my hypothesis that 'rural services are declining' was partially true. While the ONS data showed the post office closed in 2018, my land-use map showed three new boutique cafes have opened, suggesting the village's function is changing rather than just disappearing."
Stage 6: Evaluation
The examiners love this part! You need to be honest about what went wrong and how you could do better next time. To evaluate your fieldwork, ask yourself:
- Was the data reliable? (e.g., "We only visited on a Tuesday morning, so we didn't see the village when it's busy at the weekend.")
- Was the sample size big enough? (e.g., "We only spoke to 10 people; speaking to 50 would have given a more accurate view.")
- Were the methods accurate? (e.g., "The EQS is just an opinion; two different students might give the same street different scores.")
