Welcome to Graphs, Charts, and Data Presentation!

In Geography, we collect a lot of information (data). But a giant list of numbers is hard to understand. That’s where graphs and charts come in! They turn messy data into a clear "picture" that tells a story about our world. Whether you are looking at how a city grows or how a river floods, these skills are essential for all three of your exam papers.

Don’t worry if you find the "maths side" of Geography a bit scary. We will break down every type of graph you need to know for your Pearson Edexcel GCSE (9-1) Geography B course, step-by-step.

1. The "Everyday" Graphs

These are the common charts you have likely seen before. They are great for showing simple differences.

Bar Charts

What are they? Bars of different heights used to show discrete data (data that fits into separate categories). For example, the number of people living in different UK cities.

Top Tip: Always check if the bars are horizontal or vertical. In the exam, you might be asked to complete a bar chart, so keep your pencil sharp and use a ruler!

Pie Charts

What are they? Circles divided into "slices" to show proportions. The whole circle represents \(100\%\).

Real-world example: A pie chart showing the percentage of different energy sources used in the UK (e.g., \(20\%\) renewables, \(40\%\) gas).

Pictograms

What are they? These use simple pictures or symbols to represent data. Each symbol stands for a specific number (e.g., a picture of a tree might represent \(1,000\) hectares of forest).

Common Mistake: Forgetting to look at the key! If half a symbol is shown, it means half the value (e.g., half a tree = \(500\)).

Geographers love to see how things change over time or distance. These graphs help us see the "big picture."

Line Charts

What are they? Points joined by a line to show continuous data (data that changes smoothly). They are perfect for showing how temperature changes throughout a year.

Histograms

What are they? They look like bar charts, but the bars touch each other. They show continuous data that has been grouped into categories (equal class intervals). For example, the number of pebbles on a beach that fall into size categories like \(0-5cm\), \(5-10cm\), and \(10-15cm\).

3. Specialist Geography Graphs

The Edexcel specification names several specific diagrams you must be able to read and interpret.

Population Pyramids

These show the age and gender structure of a population.
- Developing countries usually have a "wide base" (lots of babies).
- Developed countries often have a "barrel shape" (more middle-aged and elderly people).

Climate Graphs

These are "two-in-one" graphs:
1. Line Graph: Shows average monthly temperature.
2. Bar Chart: Shows average monthly precipitation (rainfall).
Quick Review: Remember, if the line "dips" in the middle of the year, the place is likely in the Southern Hemisphere!

Storm Hydrographs

Used in Topic 4 (Rivers), these show how a river's discharge (the volume of water) changes after a storm. You need to know the lag-time, which is the time difference between peak rainfall and peak discharge.

Nutrient Cycle and Food Web Diagrams

In Topic 7 and 8, you will see Gersmehl diagrams. These use circles (stores) and arrows (flows) to show how nutrients move between Litter, Soil, and Biomass. The size of the circle tells you how much is stored there.

Cross-sections of the Earth

This is a diagram showing the internal structure of our planet, including the crust, mantle, outer core, and inner core (including the asthenosphere where convection happens!).

4. Maps That Present Data

Sometimes, we put data directly onto a map to see where things are happening.

Choropleth Maps

These maps use different shades of the same colour to show values. Usually, the darker the shade, the higher the value (e.g., dark green for high population density, light green for low).

Proportional Flow-line Maps

These use arrows to show movement.
- The direction of the arrow shows where things are going.
- The thickness of the arrow shows the quantity (e.g., how much oil is being traded between countries).

5. Analysing the Data

Once you have a graph, you need to be able to "interrogate" it using these techniques:

Trend Lines and Lines of Best Fit

On a scatter plot (a graph with lots of dots), a line of best fit is a straight line drawn through the middle of the points. It shows the general "trend" or direction of the data.

Interpolation vs. Extrapolation

Interpolation: Estimating a value inside the range of your data points. (e.g., guessing the temperature at \(2.5\) hours when you only measured at \(2\) and \(3\) hours).
Extrapolation: Predicting a value outside your data range by following the trend line into the future. This is more risky because we don't know if the trend will continue!

Key Takeaway: When you see a graph in the exam, follow the TEA rule:
T - Trend: What is the general pattern? (Going up, down, or staying the same?)
E - Evidence: Quote specific numbers from the axes!
A - Anomalies: Are there any "weird" points that don't fit the pattern?

6. Thinking Critically: Misleading Data

Not all graphs are honest! You should look out for weaknesses in selective statistical presentation. This is a fancy way of saying "how people trick you with graphs."

Common tricks to spot:
- Broken Axes: The \(y-axis\) doesn't start at \(0\), making small changes look massive.
- Selective Data: Only showing the years that support a specific argument and "hiding" the rest.
- Inconsistent Scales: Changing the gaps between numbers to make a line look steeper or flatter.
