1. Water Use: Demand and Supply

Every person on Earth needs water to survive, but we don't all use it in the same way. Geographers look at water as a balance between supply (how much we have) and demand (how much we want).

How do we use water?

Water use generally falls into three categories:
1. Domestic: Drinking, cooking, washing, and flushing toilets at home.
2. Agricultural: Watering crops (irrigation) and providing water for livestock.
3. Industrial: Cooling machinery in factories, generating electricity, and manufacturing products.

The Balance: Surplus vs. Shortage

The world's water isn't spread out evenly. This leads to two main situations:
- Water Surplus: This happens when the supply of water is greater than the demand. These areas usually have high rainfall and fewer people (e.g., parts of Canada or Scotland).
- Water Shortage (Water Stress): This happens when the demand for water is higher than the supply. This can be caused by low rainfall or a very high population (e.g., North Africa or parts of India).

Why is demand rising?

The world is thirsty! Demand is increasing because:
- Population Growth: More people means more water needed for drinking and hygiene.
- Economic Development: As countries become wealthier, people buy washing machines and dishwashers, and industries expand, all of which use huge amounts of water.
- Rising Living Standards: People eat more meat (which takes a lot of water to produce) and expect "luxury" water uses like swimming pools or green golf courses in dry climates.

2. Water Quality and Supply

It isn't just about how much water we have; it’s about how clean it is. Water quality refers to how suitable water is for a specific use, like drinking.

- Agriculture: Fertilizers and pesticides washing off fields into rivers.
- Industry: Chemicals or warm water (thermal pollution) being dumped into rivers.

To make sure people have enough clean water, governments use:
- Dams and Reservoirs: Large man-made lakes that store water during rainy periods so it can be used during dry periods.

- Pipelines: Moving water from areas of surplus to areas of shortage (water transfer schemes).

3. River Flooding: Why does it happen?

A flood occurs when a river's discharge (the volume of water flowing in the channel) is so high that the water spills over the banks onto the surrounding land (the flood plain).

Physical Causes (Natural)

Sometimes nature provides more water than a river can handle:
- Rainfall Intensity: Very heavy "flashy" rain doesn't have time to soak into the soil. Instead, it runs quickly over the surface (surface runoff) into the river.
- Seasonal Discharge Variation: In some parts of the world, flooding happens at the same time every year. This is often due to Monsoons (heavy seasonal tropical rains) or Snowmelt (when snow from mountains melts quickly in the spring).
- Relief: "Relief" means the shape of the land. If a valley has steep sides, water will run down into the river much faster than if the land was flat.

Human Causes (Man-made)

Humans often make flooding worse through Urbanisation:
- Impermeable Surfaces: We build roads and buildings out of concrete and tarmac. Water cannot soak through these. It flows into drains and then into rivers almost instantly.
- Deforestation: Removing trees (which we will learn more about in the "Hydrological Cycle" chapter) means there is less vegetation to soak up water, leading to faster runoff.

Common Mistake to Avoid: Don't just say "rain causes floods." To get top marks, specify rainfall intensity or prolonged rainfall. Most rivers can handle a little bit of light rain!

4. Flood Prediction and Prevention

Because floods can be so dangerous, we try to manage them in two ways: predicting them and preventing them.

Flood Prediction

This is about giving people a "heads up" so they can evacuate or protect their homes. Methods include:
- Weather Forecasting: Using satellites and radar to track storms.
- River Monitoring: Using gauges to measure how high a river is rising in real-time.
- Mapping: Looking at historical data to see which areas are at risk (e.g., a \( 1 : 100 \) year flood risk map).

Flood Prevention

This involves physical changes to the river or the land to stop the water from reaching homes. These can be categorized as:
- Hard Engineering: Man-made structures like Dams to hold back water or Levees (raised banks) to make the river channel deeper.
- Soft Engineering: Working with nature, such as Afforestation (planting trees) to soak up rain or Flood Plain Zoning (restricting building on land that is likely to flood).
- Water Abstraction: Taking water out of the river for use in homes or industry can sometimes lower the discharge, though this must be managed carefully to be sustainable.
