Introduction to Operant Conditioning

Welcome to one of the most famous areas of Psychology! In the previous chapter, we looked at Classical Conditioning, which is about learning through association. In this chapter, we explore Operant Conditioning, which is all about learning through consequences.

Think about it: Why do you study for your exams? Why do you avoid touching a hot stove? Usually, it is because of what happens after you perform the action. If you get a good grade (a reward), you study more. If you burn your hand (a punishment), you stop touching the stove. This is the heart of Operant Conditioning, championed by the psychologist B.F. Skinner.

1. The Core Principles: Reinforcement and Punishment

In Psychology, "Positive" and "Negative" do not mean "Good" and "Bad." Instead, think of them like math symbols: Positive (+) means adding something, and Negative (-) means taking something away.

Reinforcement (Increases Behavior)

The goal of reinforcement is always to make a behavior happen more often.

Positive Reinforcement: Giving a reward when a desired behavior is performed.
Example: A teacher gives you a gold star for handing in your homework on time. Because you received something "plus" (the star), you are more likely to do your homework again.

Negative Reinforcement: Taking away something unpleasant when a desired behavior is performed.
Example: You put on your seatbelt to stop the annoying "beeping" sound in the car. Because you "subtracted" the annoying noise, you are more likely to wear your seatbelt in the future.

Punishment (Decreases Behavior)

The goal of punishment is always to make a behavior happen less often.

Positive Punishment: Adding an unpleasant consequence following an unwanted behavior.
Example: A coach makes an athlete run extra laps because they were late to practice. Something "plus" (the extra laps) was added to stop the lateness.

Negative Punishment: Taking away something pleasant following an unwanted behavior.
Example: A parent takes away a teenager’s phone because they broke a house rule. Something "minus" (the phone) was removed to stop the rule-breaking.

2. Properties of Reinforcement

Not all rewards are the same. Skinner identified different types and ways of giving reinforcement.

Primary and Secondary Reinforcers

Primary Reinforcers: These satisfy basic biological needs. They are things we naturally want and don't need to learn to like.
Examples: Food, water, and sleep.

Secondary Reinforcers: These are things that have no value on their own, but we have learned to value them because they can be exchanged for primary reinforcers.
Example: Money is just paper, but it is a secondary reinforcer because it allows you to buy food (a primary reinforcer).

Schedules of Reinforcement

Reinforcement can be given in different patterns, known as schedules. If you reward a behavior every single time it happens, it is called continuous reinforcement. This is great for learning a new trick quickly. However, if you only reward the behavior sometimes, it is called partial reinforcement. This makes the behavior much harder to stop (extinguish), which explains why people keep playing slot machines even when they aren't winning!

3. Key Research: Skinner (1948) "Superstition in the Pigeon"

Skinner wanted to see if animals would develop "superstitious" behaviors if they were reinforced accidentally. This study is a classic in Topic D.

The Procedure

Skinner placed hungry pigeons in a "Skinner Box" (a controlled environment). He set a food hopper to deliver a small amount of food at regular intervals (e.g., every 15 seconds), regardless of what the pigeon was doing. The food was not a reward for any specific action; it just appeared automatically.

The Findings

In 6 out of 8 cases, the pigeons developed very specific, repetitive behaviors. One pigeon would turn counter-clockwise; another would swing its head like a pendulum; others would "toss" their heads or make pecking motions toward the corners of the box.

The pigeons acted as if their specific movement was causing the food to appear, even though the food was actually on a timer. They had been "accidentally reinforced."

The Conclusion

Skinner concluded that the pigeons were showing superstitious behavior. Because they happened to be performing a certain action just as the food arrived, they associated that action with the reward. This shows how powerful Operant Conditioning is—even accidental reinforcement can create a strong, lasting habit.

4. Evaluation of Operant Conditioning

When you write about this in your exam, you need to consider the strengths and weaknesses of the theory.

Strengths

- Scientific Credibility: Skinner used highly controlled laboratory experiments (like the Skinner Box). This makes the research objective and reliable because it can be easily repeated.
- Applications: Operant conditioning is used in the real world, such as in Token Economies in hospitals or schools, where people earn "tokens" (secondary reinforcers) for good behavior.

Weaknesses

- Animal Research: Skinner used pigeons and rats. Critics argue that humans are more complex and have free will, so we might not react to consequences as simply as animals do.
- Ignores Cognitive Processes: The theory only looks at observable behavior. It ignores what is happening inside the mind (thoughts, feelings, and motivations).
