Introduction to Data Analysis in African American Studies

Welcome! In AP African American Studies, you don't just read letters and speeches; you also learn to read "pictures of information." This chapter focuses on Skill 2D: patterns, trends, and limitations in data. Whether it’s a map of ancient trade routes or a chart about modern demographics, data helps us see the "big picture" of the African diaspora.

Don’t worry if you aren't a "math person!" On the AP exam, you won't need a calculator. You are practicing qualitative analysis, which means you are looking for the meaning, the story, and the changes shown in the data rather than doing complex math equations.


1. Reading Maps: Spatial Patterns

Maps in this course aren't just about geography; they are about movement, power, and resistance. When you see a map, you are looking for spatial patterns—where things are located and why they are moving from point A to point B.

Key Map Types in the Curriculum

  • Migration Maps: These show how people moved. Examples include the Bantu migrations (Topic 1.3) and the Great Migration of the 20th century (Topic 3.16).
  • Trade and Empire Maps: These show the reach of kingdoms like Ghana, Mali, and Songhai (Topic 1.5) or the Swahili Coast trade routes (Topic 1.8).
  • Demographic and Policy Maps: These show how laws changed the land. A major example is the Home Owners' Loan Corporation "Residential Security" map of Philadelphia (Topic 4.5), which illustrates redlining.

How to Analyze a Map

  1. Check the Title and Date: A map of Africa in 1375 (like the Catalan Atlas) tells a very different story than a map of Africa during the 1960s independence movements.
  2. Look at the Legend/Key: What do the arrows, colors, or dots represent? Arrows usually mean migration or trade. Shaded areas usually mean territory or climate regions.
  3. Identify the "Why": If you see arrows moving from the South to the North in 1920, connect it to your knowledge of Jim Crow and the search for industrial jobs.

Key Takeaway: Maps show the where and the how of African American history. Always look for the direction of movement and the boundaries of influence.


Charts and graphs show trends (how something changes over time) or comparisons (how different groups relate to each other). The AP exam often uses modern data to connect historical themes to the present.

Types of Data You Will See

  • Bar and Line Graphs: These often show growth or decline. For example, a graph might show the economic growth and political representation of the Black middle class (Topic 4.15).
  • Pie Charts: These show parts of a whole. You might see these used to explain religious diversity in contemporary Black communities (Topic 4.16), such as the percentage of Protestant vs. non-Protestant adults.

The Qualitative Approach

Instead of calculating exact percentages, ask yourself:

  • Is the line going up (increase), down (decrease), or staying the same (continuity)?
  • Which "slice of the pie" is the largest? What does that tell us about the majority experience?
  • Are there outliers? (Data points that don't fit the general pattern).

Quick Review: If a chart from the Pew Research Center shows that younger Black adults are less Protestant than their elders, the trend is a shift in religious affiliation over generations.


3. Tables: Organizing Information

Tables present raw data in rows and columns. They require you to be a "detective" to find the relationship between the categories.

Examples from the Syllabus

  • Institutional Records: The Hunter College Black and Puerto Rican Studies course schedule (1972) is a table of data (Topic 1.1). It shows the growth of the discipline in universities.
  • Economic Data: Tables comparing housing discrimination or labor statistics in different cities.

Common Mistake to Avoid

Don't just look at one number! Look at the relationship between the columns. If Column A (Year) goes up and Column B (Number of Black-owned businesses) also goes up, you have identified a positive correlation or a growth pattern.


4. Identifying Limitations (The "Missing" Data)

Part of Skill 2D is recognizing limitations. Data is powerful, but it never tells the whole story. To get top marks, you must ask: What is this data NOT telling me?

Questions to Ask for Limitations:

  • Who collected this data? (Perspective/Bias). A map drawn by a European colonizer in 1880 might "ignore" existing African kingdoms.
  • What is the scale? A map of the Domestic Slave Trade (Topic 2.5) might show the whole U.S., but it might miss the specific, individual stories of families being separated.
  • Who is excluded? If a chart about "Black Political Representation" only looks at the federal level, it misses the grassroots organizing happening in local communities (Topic 4.7).

Memory Aid: Think of data like a flashlight. It shines a bright light on one specific area, but it leaves the rest of the room in the dark. Your job is to describe what is in the light AND acknowledge what is still in the dark.


5. Exam Task: Applying Data to Task Verbs

In the Free Response or Multiple Choice sections, you will be asked to use data to perform specific tasks:

  • Describe: State what the data shows (e.g., "The map shows that Bantu-speaking people migrated toward Southern Africa").
  • Explain Why/How: Use your history knowledge to give a reason for the data (e.g., "This migration occurred because of the development of agriculture and iron-working").
  • Draw a Conclusion: Use the data as evidence for a bigger point (e.g., "The data in the Brookings report suggests that while the Black middle class has grown, economic disparities still persist").

Key Takeaway for the DBQ: If you use a data source in your Document-Based Question, you must cite it (e.g., "Source C") and explain how it supports your thesis. For at least two sources, you should also explain why the context or purpose of that data is relevant.
