Free-Time Activities: Music (音乐)
Welcome to the revision notes for Free-time activities: Music! This topic is a core part of Theme 1: Identity and culture in your AQA GCSE Chinese (Mandarin) 8673 course. Talking about music, musical instruments, concerts, and your personal tastes is one of the most common and rewarding topics across all four exam papers: Paper 1 (Listening), Paper 2 (Speaking), Paper 3 (Reading), and Paper 4 (Writing).
Whether you are aiming for Foundation Tier (Grades 1–5) or Higher Tier (Grades 4–9), mastering these key terms, measure words, and grammar structures will give you the confidence to answer questions accurately and express your own opinions clearly.
1. Essential Vocabulary & Music Genres
Let's start with the building blocks. In Chinese, many music genres simply combine a descriptive word with 音乐 (yīnyuè - music) or 乐 (yuè).
Core Musical Terms
• 音乐 (yīnyuè) — Music
• 乐器 (yuèqì) — Musical instrument
• 歌 (gē) / 歌曲 (gēqǔ) — Song
• 音乐会 (yīnyuè huì) — Concert / Musical performance
• 卡拉OK (kǎlā OK) — Karaoke
Musical Genres
• 流行音乐 (liúxíng yīnyuè) / 流行歌曲 (liúxíng gēqǔ) — Pop music / Pop songs (literally "popular music")
• 古典音乐 (gǔdiǎn yīnyuè) — Classical music (literally "ancient-classic music")
• 摇滚乐 (yáogǔnyuè) / 摇滚音乐 (yáogǔn yīnyuè) — Rock music (literally "shake-and-roll music")
• 京剧 (jīngjù) — Beijing opera
Key takeaway for genres:
Notice how 流行 (liúxíng = popular) and 古典 (gǔdiǎn = classical) pair directly with 音乐 (yīnyuè). Recognising these roots makes reading comprehension much easier!
2. Actions & Instrument Collocations: 弹 vs. 拉 vs. 打
In English, we use the single verb "to play" for almost everything (play piano, play violin, play drums). However, in Mandarin, you must choose the verb that matches the physical action you use to play the instrument!
1. Plucked or Keyed Instruments: Use 弹 (tán)
Use 弹 (tán - to flick / pluck / strike keys) for instruments played with fingers striking keys or plucking strings:
• 弹钢琴 (tán gāngqín) — to play the piano
• 弹吉他 (tán jítā) — to play the guitar
2. Bowed Instruments: Use 拉 (lā)
Use 拉 (lā - to pull / draw) for instruments played by pulling a bow across strings:
• 拉小提琴 (lā xiǎotíqín) — to play the violin
3. Percussion Instruments: Use 打 (dǎ)
Use 打 (dǎ - to hit / strike) for percussion:
• 打鼓 (dǎ gǔ) — to play drums
Other Essential Activity Verbs
• 听音乐 (tīng yīnyuè) — to listen to music
• 唱歌 (chànggē) — to sing songs
• 跳舞 (tiàowǔ) — to dance
• 看京剧 (kàn jīngjù) — to watch Beijing opera
Key takeaway for verbs:
Never use 玩 (wán - to play/have fun) for musical instruments! Saying *玩钢琴 is a common error. Always use 弹钢琴, 弹吉他, or 拉小提琴.
3. Essential Measure Words (量词) for Music
In Chinese, nouns need specific measure words when counted or paired with 这 (zhè - this) or 那 (nà - that).
• 首 (shǒu) — Measure word for songs and pieces of music.
Example: 一首歌 (yī shǒu gē — a song) / 这首流行歌曲 (zhè shǒu liúxíng gēqǔ — this pop song).
• 场 (chǎng) — Measure word for concerts, shows, and performances.
Example: 一场音乐会 (yī chǎng yīnyuè huì — a concert).
Memory trick: Think of 首 (shǒu) as matching the rhythm of a song's verse, and 场 (chǎng) as representing a large venue/courtyard where a concert takes place!
4. Key Grammar Structures
A. Expressing Preferences and Opinions
To score well on both Foundation and Higher tiers, you need to express and justify your opinions clearly.
1. Basic likes and dislikes:
• 我喜欢听流行音乐。 (Wǒ xǐhuān tīng liúxíng yīnyuè. — I like listening to pop music.)
• 我不喜欢摇滚乐。 (Wǒ bù xǐhuān yáogǔnyuè. — I do not like rock music.)
2. Expressing interest with 对……感兴趣 / 有兴趣:
Pattern: Subject + 对 + Topic + 感兴趣 / 有兴趣
• 我对古典音乐很感兴趣。 (Wǒ duì gǔdiǎn yīnyuè hěn gǎn xìngqù. — I am very interested in classical music.)
• 我对京剧没有兴趣。 (Wǒ duì jīngjù méiyǒu xìngqù. — I have no interest in Beijing opera.)
3. Giving reasons with 我觉得 / 我认为:
• 我觉得听音乐让我放松。 (Wǒ juéde tīng yīnyuè ràng wǒ fàngsōng. — I feel that listening to music relaxes me.)
• 我认为弹钢琴很有意思。 (Wǒ rènwéi tán gāngqín hěn yǒu yìsi. — I think playing the piano is very interesting.)
B. Doing Two Things at Once: 一边……一边……
Use the pattern 一边 [Action 1] 一边 [Action 2] to describe doing two actions simultaneously. This is an excellent structure for boosting your marks in speaking and writing!
Pattern: Subject + 一边 + Action 1 + 一边 + Action 2
• 我一边做作业,一边听音乐。
(Wǒ yībiān zuò zuòyè, yībiān tīng yīnyuè. — I do homework while listening to music.)
• 弟弟一边唱歌,一边跳舞。
(Dìdi yībiān chànggē, yībiān tiàowǔ. — Younger brother sings while dancing.)
C. Sentence Word Order: Time and Frequency
Don't worry if word order seems tricky at first! Just remember this golden rule: Time and frequency phrases always come BEFORE the verb phrase, never at the end of the sentence.
Pattern: Subject + Time/Frequency + Location + Verb + Object
• Correct: 我周末在房间弹吉他。 (Wǒ zhōumò zài fángjiān tán jítā. — I play guitar in my room at the weekend.)
• Incorrect: *我弹吉他在房间在周末。 (Never use English word order!)
5. Common Pitfalls & How to Avoid Them
1. Separable Verbs (离合词) Trap:
Verbs like 唱歌 (chànggē - sing songs) and 跳舞 (tiàowǔ - dance) already contain their own object (歌 = song, 舞 = dance).
• Incorrect: *我喜欢唱歌中文歌。
• Correct: 我喜欢唱中文歌。 (Drop the inner gē and replace it with your specific object zhōngwén gē), or say 唱一首歌 (sing a song).
2. Wrong Measure Word:
Avoid using the generic 个 (gè) for songs or concerts when writing. Examiners look for 一首歌 (yī shǒu gē) and 一场音乐会 (yī chǎng yīnyuè huì).
3. Foundation vs. Higher Tier Performance:
• At Foundation Tier, make sure you can accurately state what music you listen to and play, using correct word order.
• At Higher Tier, you must go beyond simple likes. Include comparative opinions (更喜欢 - prefer, 最喜欢 - like most), justifications (因为……所以……), and different timeframes (e.g., describing a past concert you attended or a future musical instrument you plan to learn).
6. Quick Review Checklist
Vocabulary check: Can you say and write music (音乐), pop music (流行音乐), classical music (古典音乐), concert (音乐会), piano (钢琴), and guitar (吉他)?
Verb check: Are you using 弹 for piano/guitar, 拉 for violin, and 听 for listening?
Grammar check: Can you build a sentence using 一边……一边…… and 对……感兴趣?
Word order check: Are your time phrases placed firmly before your verbs?
