Welcome to Theme 2: Global Issues – Poverty and Homelessness (贫困与无家可归)

Welcome to your study notes for Theme 2: Local, national, international and global areas of interest in AQA GCSE Chinese (Mandarin) 8673! In this chapter, we will focus on the global issue of Poverty and Homelessness.

You do not need to be an expert in politics or economics to do brilliantly in this topic. The exam tests your ability to express opinions, explain causes and consequences, describe social conditions, and suggest simple solutions using clear Mandarin vocabulary and grammar patterns.

Whether you are aiming for Foundation Tier (Grades 1–5) or Higher Tier (Grades 4–9), these notes will break down the essential vocabulary, sentence structures, and exam strategies step by step.

1. Essential Core Vocabulary

Let's look at the core vocabulary you will need across all four exam papers: Listening, Speaking, Reading, and Writing.

A. Key Concepts and People

贫困 / 贫穷 (pínkùn / pínqióng): Poverty / poor
无家可归 (wú jiā kě guī): Homeless (Literally: "Without a home to return to")
穷人 (qióngrén): Poor people
富人 / 有钱人 (fùrén / yǒuqiánrén): Rich people / wealthy people
住房 (zhùfáng): Housing
发展中国家 (fāzhǎn zhōng guójiā): Developing countries
钱 / 资金 (qián / zījīn): Money / funds
严重 (yánzhòng): Serious / critical
问题 (wèntí): Problem / issue / question

B. Causes, Actions, and Solutions

帮助 (bāngzhù): To help / assist / help (noun)
支持 (zhīchí): To support
捐钱 / 捐款 (juān qián / juānkuǎn): To donate money
志愿者 / 义工 (zhìyuànzhě / yìgōng): Volunteer / voluntary work
找工作 (zhǎo gōngzuò): To look for a job
解决 (jiějué): To solve / resolve
提供 (tígōng): To provide / supply
食物 (shíwù): Food

Memory Tricks and Character Clues:

无家可归 (wú jiā kě guī): Break it down! 无 (wú) = without, 家 (jiā) = home/family, 可 (kě) = can, 归 (guī) = return. Someone who has "no home they can return to" is homeless.
发展中国家 (fāzhǎn zhōng guójiā): 发展 (fāzhǎn) = develop, 中 (zhōng) = middle/in the process of, 国家 (guójiā) = country. Putting it together: "a country in the middle of developing".
Don't mix up: 穷 (qióng - poor) and 穿 (chuān - to wear). Look closely at the bottom of the character: has the component 力 (strength/effort), while 穿 has 牙 (teeth).

Section Key Takeaway: Focus first on recognizing 贫困 (pínkùn), 无家可归 (wú jiā kě guī), and 帮助 (bāngzhù). These three terms form the foundation of almost every question on this topic.

2. Key Sentence Patterns and Grammar

Using connectives and set structures helps you link ideas together smoothly in Writing and Speaking, and helps you spot key information quickly in Listening and Reading.

A. Stating Opinions and Severity

Use these patterns to describe how serious an issue is:

我觉得 / 我认为…… (wǒ juéde / wǒ rènwéi...) = I feel / I think...
……越来越严重 (…… yuè lái yuè yánzhòng) = ...is becoming more and more serious.
Example:
我觉得贫困问题越来越严重。
(Wǒ juéde pínkùn wèntí yuè lái yuè yánzhòng.)
I think the problem of poverty is becoming increasingly serious.

B. Showing Cause and Effect (因为……所以……)

To explain why people face poverty or homelessness, use 因为 (yīnwèi - because) and 所以 (suǒyǐ - therefore/so):

Example:
因为很多人找不到工作,所以他们没有钱买住房。
(Yīnwèi hěn duō rén zhǎo bù dào gōngzuò, suǒyǐ tāmen méiyǒu qián mǎi zhùfáng.)
Because many people cannot find jobs, they have no money to buy housing.

C. Proposing Actions and Expressing Obligation

Examiners love to see modal verbs that express duty and possibility:

政府 / 社会 应该…… (zhèngfǔ / shèhuì yīnggāi...) = The government / society should...
政府 / 社会 必须…… (zhèngfǔ / shèhuì bìxū...) = The government / society must...
我们 可以 / 需要…… (wǒmen kěyǐ / xūyào...) = We can / need to...
为了…… (wèile...) = In order to...
Example:
为了解决这个问题,政府必须提供更多住房。
(Wèile jiějué zhè ge wèntí, zhèngfǔ bìxū tígōng gèng duō zhùfáng.)
In order to solve this problem, the government must provide more housing.

D. Using Conditionals (如果……就……)

如果……就…… (rúguǒ... jiù...) = If... then...
Example:
如果我们捐钱支持慈善机构,就可以帮助穷人。
(Rúguǒ wǒmen juān qián zhīchí císhàn jīgòu, jiù kěyǐ bāngzhù qióngrén.)
If we donate money to support charities, we can help poor people.

Section Key Takeaway: Build your answers by stacking: Opinion (我觉得...) + Reason (因为...) + Solution (为了...政府应该...). This structure guarantees higher marks in Speaking and Writing!

3. Tackling the Four Exam Papers

Let's look at how this topic appears across the four linear exam components of AQA GCSE Chinese (8673):

Paper 1: Listening (25%) & Paper 3: Reading (25%)

• In both papers, questions test your understanding through multiple-choice, matching, and short answers in English.
Watch out for the Cause vs. Effect trap: If a passage uses 因为 (because) and 所以 (so), make sure you write down the correct reason in English. For example, if someone is homeless because they lost their job, do not confuse the job loss (cause) with needing food aid (effect).
Listen for Negatives and Modals: Pay close attention to words like 不 (bù), 没有 (méiyǒu), 不能 (bù néng), or 应该 (yīnggāi). Missing a negative completely flips the meaning of what the speaker is saying about aid or government responsibility.

Paper 2: Speaking (25%)

• Assessed through a Role-play, Photo card, and General conversation.
• When describing a photo showing poverty or a homeless person, start with what you see: 照片里有一个无家可归的人 (In the photo there is a homeless person).
• In the general conversation, expand your opinions using 我认为 (I think) and give simple practical solutions such as 做志愿者 (being a volunteer) or 捐食物 (donating food).

Paper 4: Writing (25%)

• Assessed through structured writing tasks and translation.
• You may write in either Simplified characters or Traditional characters, but be consistent throughout your paper.
• Instead of just writing short sentences like "Poverty is bad", aim for connected sentences using 为了 (in order to) and 必须 (must).

4. Common Pitfalls and Examiner-Reported Errors

Be sure to review these common mistakes identified by examiners:

Pitfall 1: Confusing Visually Similar Characters
Be careful when reading and writing characters that look alike:
- 穷 (qióng - poor) vs. 穿 (chuān - wear)
- 困 (kùn - trapped/poverty) vs. 因 (yīn - because): Notice that has a tree 木 inside the box, while has 大 inside.

Pitfall 2: Confusing Cause and Solution
When answering reading comprehension questions in English, double check whether the question asks "Why is this happening?" (Causes: lack of jobs, lack of money) or "What should be done?" (Solutions: donate funds, build housing, volunteer).

Pitfall 3: Tone and Sound Mix-ups
In the listening exam, keep an ear out for numbers, currencies, and time phrases connected to donations or funds (资金 / 钱) so you do not record the wrong quantities.

5. Quick Revision Review

Test yourself with these three model sentences. If you can understand and write these, you are exam-ready for this topic!

1. Foundation Level Idea:
无家可归是一个严重的问题,我们应该帮助穷人。
(Wú jiā kě guī shì yī gè yánzhòng de wèntí, wǒmen yīnggāi bāngzhù qióngrén.)
Homelessness is a serious problem; we should help poor people.

2. Higher Level Cause & Solution:
在很多发展中国家,因为很多人找不到工作,所以贫困问题越来越严重。
(Zài hěn duō fāzhǎn zhōng guójiā, yīnwèi hěn duō rén zhǎo bù dào gōngzuò, suǒyǐ pínkùn wèntí yuè lái yuè yánzhòng.)
In many developing countries, because many people cannot find work, the poverty problem is becoming increasingly serious.

3. Complex Solution Sentence:
为了解决住房问题,政府必须提供资金和食物支持无家可归的人。
(Wèile jiějué zhùfáng wèntí, zhèngfǔ bìxū tígōng zījīn hé shíwù zhīchí wú jiā kě guī de rén.)
In order to solve the housing problem, the government must provide funds and food to support homeless people.
