1. Food Miles and Transportation

Have you ever looked at a label on a pack of green beans and noticed they were flown all the way from Kenya? The distance food travels from where it is produced to where it is eaten is called food miles.

Carbon Footprint

Every time food is moved by plane, ship, or truck, it burns fossil fuels. This releases carbon dioxide into the atmosphere, contributing to global warming. The total amount of greenhouse gases produced by our food choices is known as our carbon footprint.

  • High Food Miles: Often involves air travel, which has the highest environmental impact.
  • Low Food Miles: Usually involves local transport, which is much better for the environment.

2. Seasonal Foods

Seasonality refers to the times of year when a particular food is at its peak harvest and is naturally ready to eat in your local area. For example, strawberries are in season in the UK during the summer.

Why eat seasonally?

Eating food out of season (like wanting fresh raspberries in December) usually means:

  • The food has been imported from a warmer country (increasing food miles).
  • Or, it has been grown in heated greenhouses locally, which uses a massive amount of energy/electricity.

3. Buying Locally

5. Food Waste

Food waste is a huge environmental problem. When we waste food, we also waste all the energy, water, and land used to grow it. Waste happens at three main stages:

A. Production (The Farm)

Sometimes food is wasted before it even leaves the farm. This can be due to pests, bad weather, or "cosmetic standards" (where supermarkets refuse to buy "ugly" vegetables that are perfectly fine to eat).

B. Retail (The Supermarket)

Supermarkets may throw away food that has reached its "use by" date or if they have ordered too much of a certain product (overstocking).

C. At Home

This is where most waste happens! We often:

  • Cook too much and don't eat the leftovers.
  • Don't store food correctly, so it goes off.
  • Confuse "Best Before" dates (which are about quality) with "Use By" dates (which are about safety).

6. Packaging

Packaging protects food and keeps it safe, but it can be a nightmare for the environment.

  • The Problem: Many plastics are made from oil and can take hundreds of years to decompose in a landfill. Plastic that ends up in the ocean harms marine life.
  • The Solution: Choosing products with biodegradable or recyclable packaging (like cardboard, glass, or tin) is much better for the planet.
