Introduction to Planning a Study for Paper 4

Welcome to one of the most important parts of your A Level Psychology journey! In Paper 4 (Specialist Options), you are asked to step into the shoes of a researcher. Section B of this paper requires you to design an original psychological study based on a specific scenario and then evaluate it. This is your chance to show that you understand how research actually happens in the real world of Clinical, Consumer, Health, or Organisational Psychology.

Don't worry if this seems a bit overwhelming at first. Think of it like writing a recipe: if you provide the right ingredients (variables) and clear instructions (procedure), anyone should be able to "cook" your study exactly the same way!

The Planning Requirements (The 10-Mark Question)

In Paper 4, your plan needs to be much more detailed than it was for Paper 2. To get full marks, you must include specific elements so that your study is replicable (meaning someone else could follow your plan to repeat the study). Your plan must cover:

1. Aims and Hypotheses

You must clearly state what you are trying to find out (the aim) and what you predict will happen (the hypothesis). Remember these key types of hypotheses:

  • Alternative Hypothesis: Predicts a relationship or difference.
    • Directional (one-tailed): Predicts exactly which way the results will go (e.g., "Group A will score higher than Group B").
    • Non-directional (two-tailed): Predicts a difference but doesn't say which way (e.g., "There will be a difference between Group A and Group B").
  • Null Hypothesis \( (H_0) \): Predicts that any results are just due to chance (e.g., "There will be no significant difference...").

Top Tip: Always operationalise your variables! Instead of saying "happiness," say "a score from 1 to 10 on a subjective well-being scale."

2. Sample and Sampling Technique

You need to explain who your participants are and how you will find them. You should mention:

  • The Sample: Demographics like age range, gender, or specific characteristics (e.g., "employees at a retail store" or "patients diagnosed with OCD").
  • Sampling Technique: How will you get them? Will you use Opportunity sampling (whoever is available), Random sampling (everyone has an equal chance), or Volunteer/Self-selecting sampling (asking people to sign up)?

3. Method and Procedure

This is the "meat" of your plan. You must describe the step-by-step process. Depending on the method chosen (Experiment, Observation, Self-report, etc.), you must include:

  • Apparatus/Materials: What tools are you using? (e.g., a specific psychometric test, a rating scale, or fMRI scans).
  • Location: Where is it happening? (A laboratory, a field setting like a hospital, or an online postal questionnaire).
  • Controls: How will you keep the study fair? (Standardised instructions, random allocation to groups).

4. Ethics

Psychology is about people, so you must protect them! Your plan must mention how you will follow ethical guidelines:

  • Valid Consent: Ensuring participants know what they are joining.
  • Right to Withdraw: They can leave at any time.
  • Confidentiality: Keeping their data private.
  • Debriefing: Explaining the true aim after the study is over.
  • Minimising Harm: Ensuring no physical or psychological distress.

5. Data Analysis

How will you make sense of the numbers? For Paper 4, you only need to use descriptive statistics. You should state which ones you would use:

  • Measures of Central Tendency: Finding the mean, median, or mode.
  • Measures of Spread: Using the range or standard deviation \( (SD) \).
  • Visual Displays: How will you graph it? (e.g., a bar chart for different categories or a scatter graph for correlations).

Evaluating Your Plan (The 14-Mark Question)

After you have written your plan, you must critique it. This involves discussing the strengths and weaknesses of your design. Focus on these three areas:

1. Validity

Does your study actually measure what it claims to measure?

  • Ecological Validity: Is the environment and task realistic to everyday life?
  • Temporal Validity: Would these findings still be true in several years' time?
  • Demand Characteristics: Could participants guess the aim and change their behaviour?

2. Reliability

Is your study consistent?

  • Replicability: Are your instructions clear enough for someone else to do the exact same thing?
  • Inter-rater Reliability: If you are observing behaviour, would two different researchers see the same thing?
  • Test-retest Reliability: If you gave the same test to the same person later, would they get the same score?

3. Practical Issues

Think about the "real world" problems of your study. Is it too expensive? Does it take too long? Is it difficult to find the right participants? For example, a longitudinal study (tracking people over many years) provides great data but suffers from attrition (people dropping out).

A Level Specific Methods to Consider

When planning for Paper 4, the syllabus introduces extra methods you can use beyond the basic AS Level ones:

  • Randomised Control Trials (RCTs): Often used in Clinical Psychology to test if a treatment works by randomly assigning patients to a treatment group or a control group.
  • Psychometric Tests: Standardised tests that measure mental traits (e.g., the Beck Depression Inventory).
  • Rating Scales: Using forced/fixed choice questions or Likert scales (e.g., 1-5) to get quantitative data from a self-report.
