Introduction: What Makes a Species, a Species?

In our previous chapter, we looked at how natural selection causes populations to change over time. But when do these changes become so great that we consider a group of organisms to be a completely different "type"? In Biology, we call these distinct types species.

Understanding what a species is helps scientists organize the incredible diversity of life on Earth. For your H1 Biology exam, we focus on one specific way of defining a species: the Biological Species Concept.

The Biological Species Concept

The most widely used definition for a species is based on reproductive behavior rather than just what an organism looks like.

According to the Biological Species Concept, a species is a group of organisms that:

  1. Can interbreed (mate with one another) in nature.
  2. Produce viable, fertile offspring.
  3. Are reproductively isolated from other such groups.

1. Interbreeding in Nature

This means the organisms naturally choose to mate with each other in their normal environment. If two animals only mate because they are forced together in a zoo, they might not be considered the same species under this concept.

2. Viable and Fertile Offspring

This is the "gold standard" of the definition. It’s not enough to just have a baby; that baby must be able to grow up and have babies of its own.

  • Viable: The offspring survives to adulthood.
  • Fertile: The offspring is capable of reproducing.

Example: A horse and a donkey can mate to produce a mule. However, a mule is sterile (it cannot have its own babies). Therefore, horses and donkeys are considered two different species.
