In this chapter, we learn how to look closely at existing products to understand how they work, why they were made, and how they could be better. This isn't just about finding faults; it's about understanding the context in which a product exists.

Note: This topic is vital for your Paper 2 exam and your Internal Assessment (IA), where you will be required to analyze and evaluate a product of your own choice!

1. Analysis vs. Evaluation: What’s the difference?

It is easy to get these two terms mixed up, but they serve different purposes in Design Technology.

Analysis is about breaking a product down into its individual parts to see how it "ticks."
Example: "This chair is made of \( 4 \) wooden legs, a curved plywood seat, and steel bolts."

Evaluation is about making a judgment or appraisal. You weigh the strengths and limitations to decide how well the product does its job.
Example: "The chair is very stable but the seat is too hard for long periods of use, meaning its comfort is limited."

2. Key Areas of Product Analysis

When we analyze a product in "context," we look through several different lenses. You don't need to learn new theories here; instead, you apply what you've learned in other chapters to an existing object.

A. Ergonomics and Human Factors

We analyze how the product interacts with the person using it. (Refer back to A1.1 Ergonomics for deeper detail).

  • Efficiency: Does the product help the user finish a task quickly?
  • Safety: Are there sharp edges or risks of injury?
  • Usability: Is it intuitive to use, or do you need a \( 100 \)-page manual?
  • Anthropometrics: Does the size of the product fit the intended user? (e.g., Is the handle designed for the \( 5^{th} \) percentile of hand sizes or the \( 95^{th} \)?)

B. Materials and Manufacture

We look at what the product is made of and how it was put together. (Refer to B3.1 Material selection for justification).

  • Material Choice: Why use aluminum instead of plastic? (e.g., Is it for durability, weight, or aesthetics?)
  • Finishing Techniques: Has the surface been polished, painted, or textured? How does this affect the form and feel of the product?
  • Cost and Availability: Does the material choice make the product affordable for the target market?

C. Sustainability and Environment

3. How to Evaluate a Product Effectively

Don't worry if this seems tricky at first! Evaluation is a skill that gets better with practice. To evaluate a product, you should use the following methods:

1. User and Client Feedback: Talk to the people who actually use the product. What do they love? What do they hate? This is a primary research method (see A2.1).

2. Performance Testing: Put the product to work! Does the "waterproof" jacket actually keep the water out? Testing provides data to support your evaluation.

3. Comparison: Compare the product against its competitors. Does Product A have better function than Product B for the same price?

4. Iterative Development: We evaluate existing products to find "pain points." These are the problems that designers try to solve when they create a redesign or a new prototype (see B2.2).

The IB emphasizes Product Analysis because it is the foundation of good design. You will encounter this in two major ways:

The Paper 2 Exam

In Paper 2, you will be given an image and information about a product you have never seen before. You will be asked to analyze its features and evaluate its design based on the concepts we discussed above. You might have to calculate dimensions or interpret data—for example, if a table is \( 750mm \) high, you might evaluate if that is suitable for a standard office chair.

The Internal Assessment (IA)

Your IA is a large project where you must select an existing product, analyze why it isn't perfect, and then redesign it. You cannot successfully redesign something unless you have first performed a thorough analysis and evaluation of the original!
