Imagine you want to know if teenagers in your city prefer studying with music or in silence. There are thousands of teenagers in your city—you can’t possibly talk to every single one of them! Instead, you select a smaller group to represent the whole. This is called sampling.
In this chapter, we will explore how psychologists choose their participants and why picking the right "slice of the pie" is essential for good research. This is a core part of the Research methodology strand of your IB Psychology course and will be vital for your Internal Assessment (IA) research proposal.
1. Understanding the "Population of Interest"
Before a researcher starts a study, they must define their population of interest. This is the specific group of people that the researcher wants to learn about and to whom the results should apply.
Population of Interest vs. Sample:
- Population of Interest: The entire group (e.g., "All IB Diploma students in Europe" or "Children aged 5–7 with ADHD").
- The Sample: The actual group of individuals who take part in the research study.
Analogy: If the population of interest is a giant pot of soup, the sample is the single spoonful you taste to see if it needs more salt. If you stir the pot well, that one spoonful should tell you about the whole pot!
2. Common Sampling Techniques
How do we get that "spoonful" of participants? Psychologists use several techniques, depending on their goals and the resources they have.
Opportunity Sampling
This involves using people who are easily available at the time and fit the criteria. For example, asking students in the cafeteria during lunch break to fill out a survey.
Pros: It’s quick, easy, and cheap.
Cons: It can lead to bias because the sample might not be representative of the wider population (e.g., maybe the students in the cafeteria at that specific time all share similar habits).
Random Sampling
Every member of the population of interest has an equal chance of being selected. This is often done using a random number generator or drawing names from a hat.
Pros: It reduces researcher bias and is more likely to be representative.
Cons: It is often very difficult and time-consuming to identify every single member of a population to give them an equal chance.
Purposive Sampling
Participants are chosen specifically because they possess a particular trait or experience that is relevant to the study. For example, if you are studying the effects of a specific health condition, you would purposely seek out individuals with that condition.
Pros: Ensures the participants are highly relevant to the research question.
Cons: The sample size is often small, and it can be hard to generalize the findings to others.
Snowball Sampling
The researcher finds one or two participants and then asks them to "refer" or recruit other people they know who fit the criteria. This is like a "friend-of-a-friend" chain.
Pros: Great for finding "hidden" populations (e.g., people with rare hobbies or sensitive life experiences).
Cons: It’s rarely representative because people tend to recommend friends who are similar to themselves.
Self-Selected (Volunteer) Sampling
Participants become part of the study because they volunteer in response to an advertisement or a request.
Pros: Participants are usually motivated and willing to help.
Cons: "Volunteer bias"—people who volunteer for studies might be different (e.g., more outgoing or more interested in the topic) than those who don't.

3. Class Practicals: Prescribed Sample Sizes
In your IB course, you will complete four class practicals. The IB is very specific about the minimum number of participants (sample size) you need for each method. You will be examined on these in Paper 2 Section A.
The Golden Rules for Sample Sizes:
- Health and well-being (Interview): You need \( 1 \) participant for an individual interview OR \( 3 \) to \( 8 \) participants for a focus group.
- Human development (Observation): You need \( 1 \) participant.
- Human relationships (Survey/Questionnaire): You need at least \( 10 \) participants.
- Learning and cognition (Experiment): You need at least \( 5 \) participants.
Don't worry if this seems small! These are the minimum requirements for your class practicals to help you learn the methodology. In professional research, sample sizes are usually much larger to increase measurement accuracy.
4. Sampling and the Concept of Bias
The concept of bias is central to sampling. Sampling bias occurs when some members of the population of interest are more likely to be included than others. If a sample is biased, the researcher cannot easily claim that the results apply to everyone in the population.
Example of Sampling Bias:
A researcher wants to study "teenagers' attitudes toward technology" but only recruits participants from a high-tech coding club. This sample is biased because these teens likely enjoy technology more than the "average" teenager. The perspective of the sample doesn't match the population of interest.
5. Sampling in your Research Proposal (IA)
For your Internal Assessment, you won't actually conduct the study and collect data. Instead, you will write a research proposal. A key part of this is identifying your population of interest and explaining your sampling process.
You will need to justify:
- Who your population is.
- Which sampling technique you would use.
- Why that technique is appropriate for your chosen context (Health and well-being, Human development, Human relationships, or Learning and cognition).
