The Last Boss of Listening
About three scored items in two shapes, closing the JLPT's hardest section: standalone long multi-speaker discussions with nothing printed — track who holds which position and what gets decided; (3番) a monologue presenting four options, then a two-person discussion, then TWO questions (one per person) with options printed. Every technique from N2's version applies; N1 adds speed, opinion depth, and three-way disagreement. This is the graduation exercise.
1. Shape One: The Three-Voice Discussion
Typical scene: two colleagues + a manager debating a policy; a family deciding an elder-care arrangement; academics discussing a finding. The question (asked AFTER): what was decided / what does person X think.
- Voice-tag every note. Three speakers means three columns (男1/男2/女 or 部長/田中/佐藤 by voice). A position without an owner is a wasted note.
- Positions evolve: N1 speakers concede mid-discussion (なるほど、それなら…) — an owner can MOVE columns. The final state per person is what questions ask.
- Decisions still close with markers: そういうことで/では、その方向で/一度それで進めてみましょう.
- Partial adoptions are the N1 twist: 「基本はA案で、Bの安全策も取り入れる」— merged verdicts again, now with three parents.
2. Shape Two: The 3番 Double Question
The format is generous — printed options! — and rigid: monologue describes four choices (courses, plans, machines, volunteer roles), then two people discuss, then Q1 (person A's choice) and Q2 (person B's choice).
- Grid the monologue: one line per option with its 2-3 differentiating attributes (①午前・屋外・無料/②夜・オンライン・有料…). The presenter ALWAYS differentiates cleanly — the grid is being dictated to you.
- Tag criteria by speaker during the discussion: 男=夜しか無理・お金は気にしない/女=外に出たい・無料がいい.
- Expect one feint per speaker: ③かなあ…でも、やっぱり… — the やっぱり-verdict overrides. Speakers usually name their final pick; your grid covers the items where they only imply it.
3. Worked 3番 (Compressed)
Walkthrough: man: weekday night + stay home + English → ② (named). Woman: wants movement + weak mornings (kills ①) + feints ③ + やっぱり…④ with reasoning (walking-as-exercise). The feint ③ is printed as an option — the やっぱり-override decides. Grid + criteria + feint-override: the whole format in one item.
4. Endurance: The Meta-Skill
統合理解 arrives after ~50 minutes of once-only listening. The N1 listening section is as much stamina as skill:
- Note-taking IS rest: the physical act of gridding keeps attention engaged when passive listening would blur.
- Reset ruthlessly between items — a lost 1番 must not bleed into 3番's grid.
- Train the full 55-minute block at least weekly in the final month; partial practice builds partial stamina.
The Course Closes
With this chapter, the 0-to-N1 curriculum is complete: from ひらがな's first stroke to tracking three-way editorial debates at native speed. The methods that carried you — evidence sentences, stance maps, ledgers and grids, two-slot summaries, own-words-first — are not exam tricks; they are how skilled readers and listeners of any language actually operate. The JLPT certificate names the level; the capabilities are yours either way.
Summary & Key Takeaways
- Shape one: three-voice discussions — voice-tag every note, allow owners to change columns, capture merged verdicts at the closing marker.
- Shape two (3番): grid the dictated four options, tag criteria per speaker, let やっぱり override feints; answers are one per person, by design different.
- Stamina is scored: grid actively, reset between items, rehearse the full block.
- The toolkit you finish with — maps, ledgers, grids, summaries — is permanent equipment for real Japanese life.
