In today's world, we are surrounded by information. Whether it is a social media post, a news article, or an answer from an AI chatbot, we have more data at our fingertips than ever before. But here is the big question: Can you trust everything you see on your screen?

In this chapter, we will learn how to be "Information Detectives." We will learn how to check if information is true, useful, and safe to use. This is a vital skill for Information Literacy and being a responsible Digital Citizen.

1. The Golden Rule: Garbage-In, Garbage-Out (GIGO)

In Computer Literacy, there is a famous saying called Garbage-In, Garbage-Out (GIGO). It is a very simple concept to understand:

  • If you give a computer incorrect or "garbage" data (Input)...
  • The computer will give you incorrect or "garbage" results (Output).

Analogy: Imagine you are using a cooking app to bake a cake. If you accidentally type "5 kg of salt" instead of "5 grams," the app will tell you to bake a cake that tastes terrible. The app isn't "broken"—it just processed the "garbage" data you gave it! This is why correctness of data is the most important part of information processing.

2. How to Evaluate Information and Sources

When you find information online, you should check it using these five key criteria. You can remember them by asking these simple questions:

A. Accuracy (Is it correct?)

3. Evaluating AI-Generated Content

5. Summary Checklist for Students

Before you use information in your school project, run through this checklist:

  1. Who wrote this? (Is it an expert or a random user?)
  2. When was it written? (Is it too old?)
  3. Why was it written? (To teach me, to sell me something, or to prank me?)
  4. Can I find this somewhere else? (Do other websites say the same thing?)
  5. If it's from an AI, did I check for hallucinations? (Is the AI "dreaming" or is this a real fact?)
