Welcome to History: The World's First Civilizations!

Have you ever wondered who built the very first cities, invented the wheel, or wrote down the first stories? Thousands of years ago, humans stopped moving from place to place and began living together in large, organised communities. We call these groups civilizations.

In this chapter, we will travel back in time to explore where and when the world's four earliest civilizations appeared. Don't worry if all these ancient dates and names seem tricky at first — we will break them down step-by-step with helpful tips and memory tricks!

1. What is an Early Civilization?

A civilization is an advanced stage of human society where people live together in organised communities with shared rules, culture, and technologies.

Think of it like a bustling modern town compared to a small campsite. Instead of just trying to survive day-to-day, people in a civilization organise their lives in clever ways.

The 6 Clues of an Early Civilization

To be called an early civilization, a society usually had all six of these features:

1. Big Cities and Towns: People lived in permanent, well-built settlements rather than moving around.
2. Central Government and Leaders: They had kings, queens, or priests to make laws and keep order.
3. Writing and Record-Keeping: They invented symbols and scripts to count trade goods, record laws, and tell stories.
4. Farming Near Great Rivers (Agricultural Surplus): Major rivers provided fresh water and rich soil. Clever watering systems called irrigation helped farmers grow extra food (a surplus) to feed big cities.
5. Job Specialisation (Division of Labour): Because not everyone needed to farm, people became builders, craftspeople, priests, traders, or soldiers.
6. Monumental Buildings and Inventions: They built giant temples, tombs, or palaces, and invented tools like the wheel or metal weapons.

Quick Takeaway: Early civilizations had cities, writing, leaders, big buildings, different jobs, and lots of food grown along big rivers!

2. The "Big Four": Where and When Did They Appear?

Long ago, four great civilizations grew up independently in different river valleys across Africa and Asia. Let's meet each one!

1. Ancient Sumer (Mesopotamia)

Where was it? In the Middle East (modern-day Iraq) between two great rivers: the Tigris and the Euphrates. This area is often called the "Cradle of Civilization".
When did it happen? It first appeared around 4000–3500 BC and flourished until around 2000 BC.
Key Achievements:
- Invented cuneiform, one of the earliest writing systems in the world (pressing wedge-shaped marks into wet clay).
- Created the potter's wheel and wheeled carts.
- Built huge, stepped temple-towers called ziggurats.
- Created a base-\(60\) counting system (which is why we still have \(60\) seconds in a minute, \(60\) minutes in an hour, and \(360^\circ\) in a full circle!).
- Dug irrigation canals to water their crops.

2. Ancient Egypt (The Nile Valley)

Where was it? In North-East Africa, along the banks of the mighty River Nile.
When did it happen? Farming communities settled around 5000 BC, and a unified kingdom emerged around 3100 BC, lasting until 30 BC.
Key Achievements:
- Invented hieroglyphic writing (carved and painted picture symbols) and made paper from the papyrus plant.
- Built breathtaking stone monuments like the Pyramids of Giza.
- Mastered mummification (embalming bodies to preserve them for the afterlife).
- Created an accurate \(365\)-day solar calendar based on the yearly flooding of the Nile (called the inundation).

3. The Indus Valley Civilization (Harappan Civilization)

Where was it? Along the fertile basin of the Indus River, across modern-day Pakistan and north-west India.
When did it happen? Flourished during its peak (the Mature Harappan period) between 2600 BC and 1900 BC.
Key Achievements:
- World famous for amazing urban grid planning (straight streets arranged in neat blocks, just like modern cities!).
- Sturdy houses built from standard baked bricks.
- Advanced underground, covered drainage and sewage systems to keep streets clean.
- Built large public structures, including the famous Great Bath of Mohenjo-daro.
- Used standardized weights and measures for fair trading, and stamped carved symbols onto stone seals (their script is still a mystery that experts cannot yet read!).

4. The Shang Dynasty of Ancient China

Where was it? In northern China, along the rich valley of the Yellow River (also called the Huang He).
When did it happen? Ruled from around 1600 BC to 1046 BC.
Key Achievements:
- Mastered advanced bronze metallurgy, casting beautiful bronze pots, ritual vessels, and strong weapons.
- Created the earliest known Chinese writing on animal bones and turtle shells, known as oracle bones (jiaguwen), used to ask questions about the future.
- Produced fine silk cloth.
- Built grand walled cities, such as the capital at Anyang (also called Yin).

3. What was Happening in Britain at the Same Time?

It is easy to think that when Egypt was building giant pyramids, Britain was doing the same thing. But that is not true!

• While people in Sumer and Egypt were writing on clay tablets and building grand cities (around 3000–2500 BC), Britain was in the Neolithic (New Stone Age) and Early Bronze Age.
• People in Britain lived in small farming villages, made simple pottery, and built stone monuments like Stonehenge.
• Britain did not have written records or large cities during this time. Writing and Roman-style cities did not arrive in Britain until the Roman conquest in 43 AD — thousands of years after Sumer and Egypt!

Key Takeaway: Early civilizations grew at different times in different parts of the world. Britain was still in the Stone and Bronze Ages while the first river valley civilizations were already writing and building cities.

4. Common Historical Pitfalls (Don't Get Tripped Up!)

Mistake 1: "The Romans and Greeks came first."
Correction: Ancient Sumer and Ancient Egypt existed thousands of years before Ancient Greece and the Roman Empire!

Mistake 2: "Egypt was the only ancient civilization."
Correction: Brilliant, complex civilizations grew up separately around the same time across Asia, the Middle East, and Africa.

Mistake 3: "All ancient writing was the same."
Correction: Cuneiform (Sumer) used wedge-shaped marks pressed into soft clay, whereas Hieroglyphs (Egypt) were pictures carved or painted on stone and papyrus.

Mistake 4: "Mixing up the rivers."
Correction: Always match the civilization to its river! Sumer = Tigris & Euphrates; Egypt = Nile; Harappa = Indus; Shang Dynasty = Yellow River (Huang He).
