Mastering Advanced Sentences: Comparative, Existence, Exclusion, and Emphasis

Welcome to one of the most rewarding sections of your Pearson Edexcel A Level Chinese (9CN0) grammar study! At GCSE, you mastered basic sentence patterns. At A Level, you are expected to manipulate language with nuance, elegance, and precision across all three papers — whether writing analytical essays on prescribed works in Paper 2, translating complex passages in Paper 1 and Paper 2, or holding a fluent discussion in Paper 3 (Mandarin 9CN0/03M or Cantonese 9CN0/03C).

This chapter focuses on the advanced syntactic structures listed under Other constructions in Appendix 3 of the specification:
• Comparative constructions (making nuanced evaluations and contrasts)
• Existence sentences (describing what exists, appears, or remains in a setting)
• Exclusion using 除了……(以外)…… (setting parameters and exceptions)
• Emphasis structures: 連……都/也…… / 连……都/也…… (extreme cases), 是……的 (spotlighting time, manner, place, or agent), and 不論/無論……都…… / 不论/无论……都…… (unconditional results)

Note on character scripts: In the Edexcel examination, texts are presented in both traditional and simplified characters, and you may answer in either script. Both forms are provided throughout these notes.

1. Comparative Constructions (比較句 / 比较句)

Comparing ideas, trends, and characters is central to scoring high marks in AO3 (manipulating complex language accurately) and AO4 (critical analysis). Let's break down the essential comparative structures from straightforward comparisons to advanced gradations.

A. Standard Comparison with 比 (bǐ)

The standard structure compares two items directly:

\(A + \text{比} + B + \text{Adjective / Predicate}\)

• Traditional: 如今中國的經濟發展比過去更快。
• Simplified: 如今中国的经济发展比过去更快。
• Meaning: Nowadays China's economic development is faster than in the past. (Theme 3)

Advanced Modification (Degree & Quantifiers):
Never use degree adverbs like 很 (hěn), 非常 (fēicháng), or 十分 (shífēn) directly after 比! Instead, place specific qualifiers after the adjective:

• Slight difference: \(A + \text{比} + B + \text{Adj} + \text{一點兒/一点儿 / 一些}\)
• Substantial difference: \(A + \text{比} + B + \text{Adj} + \text{得多 / 多了}\)
• Exact quantity: \(A + \text{比} + B + \text{Adj} + \text{Numeral-Measure Phrase}\)

Example:
• Traditional: 城市的貧富差距比鄉村大得多。
• Simplified: 城市的贫富差距比乡村大得多。
• Meaning: The wealth gap in cities is much greater than in rural areas. (Theme 4)

B. Negative and Inferior Comparisons: 没有 (méiyǒu) and 不如 (bùrú)

When you want to say "\(A\) is not as [adjective] as \(B\)", use 沒有 / 没有 or the more formal/written 不如:

\(A + \text{沒有/没有} + B + (\text{那麼/那么 / 這麼/这么}) + \text{Adjective}\)
\(A + \text{不如} + B + (\text{Adjective})\)

• Traditional: 很多年輕人的工作生活平衡不如上一代人。
• Simplified: 很多年轻人的工作生活平衡不如上一代人。
• Meaning: Many young people's work-life balance is not as good as that of the older generation. (Theme 1)

Key Examiner Distinction:
• \(A + \text{不比} + B + \text{Adj}\) means "\(A\) is not more [adjective] than \(B\)" (implying they are roughly equal or \(A\) is slightly less).
• \(A + \text{沒有} + B + \text{Adj}\) means "\(A\) falls short of \(B\)" (a clear inferior comparison).

C. Similarity and Parity: 跟 / 和 / 同……一樣/一样 (yíyàng)

To state that two concepts share the same degree of a quality:

\(A + \text{跟 / 和 / 與 / 同} + B + \text{一樣/一样} + (\text{Adjective})\)

To express that they are different, negate using 不一樣 / 不一样 before the adjective:

• Traditional: 現代家庭結構與傳統觀念不一樣。
• Simplified: 现代家庭结构与传统观念不一样。
• Meaning: Modern family structures are not the same as traditional concepts. (Theme 1)

D. Progressive Proportional Change: 越來越…… / 越……越……

• Unchecked trend: 越來越…… / 越来越…… (more and more...)
• Dynamic correlation: 越 \(A\) 越 \(B\) (the more \(A\), the more \(B\))

• Traditional: 隨著城市化進程加速,人口老齡化問題越來越嚴重。
• Simplified: 随着城市化进程加速,人口老龄化问题越来越严重。
• Meaning: With the acceleration of urbanisation, the ageing population problem is becoming increasingly serious. (Theme 1 / Theme 4)

Quick Summary — Comparisons:
Use 比 for direct superiority, append 得多 / 一點兒 for degree (never use 很), use 不如 / 沒有 for inferior comparisons, and 越……越…… to trace evolving socioeconomic trends.

2. Existence Sentences (存現句 / 存现句)

Existence sentences are vital for scene-setting in Paper 2 literary essays (such as describing the environment in 《城南舊事》 or 《故鄉》) and describing physical or social realities in Paper 1 and Paper 3. They state that someone or something exists, appears, or remains at a particular location.

The Fundamental Structure

\(\text{Location / Time Phrase} + \text{Verb} + \text{Aspect Marker (著/着 or 了)} + \text{Numeral / Measure} + \text{Noun (Subject)}\)

Three Crucial Rules to Remember:

1. Location comes first: Do not use 在 (zài) before the location at the start of the sentence.
• Incorrect: 在桌子上放著一本書。
• Correct: 桌子上放著一本書。/ 桌子上放着一本书。 (On the table lies a book.)

2. The entity must be indefinite: The noun following the verb cannot be preceded by 这 (zhè / this) or 那 (nà / that). It should be introduced with a numeral and measure word (e.g. 一座、幾個人 / 几个人).

3. Choice of Aspect Marker:
• 著 / 着 (zhe): Expresses a static, ongoing state resulting from an earlier action.
• 了 (le): Expresses an emergence, disappearance, or newly completed state.

Examples in A Level Contexts

• Traditional (Theme 4 / Literary description):
村口站著幾個老人,村子裡充滿了安靜的氣氛。
• Simplified:
村口站着几个老人,村子里充满了安静的气氛。
• Meaning: At the entrance of the village stood several elderly people; the village was filled with a quiet atmosphere.

• Traditional (Appearance / Change):
近年來,中國的大城市裡出現了許多新興科技公司。
• Simplified:
近年来,中国的大城市里出现了许多新兴科技公司。
• Meaning: In recent years, many emerging technology companies have appeared in China's megacities. (Theme 3 / Theme 4)

Quick Summary — Existence:
Place word first (no 在) + Verb + 著/了 + Indefinite Noun. Perfect for scene analysis and environmental context.

3. Exclusion: 除了……以外…… (chúle... yǐwài)

The pattern 除了……(以外 / 之類)…… allows you to either set boundaries by excluding something ("except") or expand your scope by adding something ("besides / in addition to"). The meaning depends entirely on the correlating adverb in the main clause: 都 (dōu) vs 也 / 還 (yě / hái).

A. Meaning 1: Exclusive / "Except for" (Correlates with 都 or 全)

\(\text{除了} + X + \text{(以外)},\text{Subject} + \text{都 / 全} + \text{Predicate}\)

In this pattern, \(X\) is the sole exception to the general statement.

• Traditional: 除了少數偏遠地區以外,互聯網技術都已經普及了。
• Simplified: 除了少数偏远地区以外,互联网技术都已经普及了。
• Meaning: Except for a few remote areas, internet technology has been popularised everywhere. (Theme 3)

B. Meaning 2: Inclusive / "In addition to / Besides" (Correlates with 也 or 還/还)

\(\text{除了} + X + \text{(以外)},\text{Subject} + \text{也 / 還} + \text{Predicate}\)

Here, \(X\) is included alongside other items in the broader statement.

• Traditional: 除了春節以外,中秋節也是華人社會極為重視的傳統節日。
• Simplified: 除了春节以外,中秋节也是华人社会极为重视的传统节日。
• Meaning: In addition to the Spring Festival, the Mid-Autumn Festival is also a traditional festival highly valued in Chinese society. (Theme 2)

Top Tip to Avoid Confusion:
Always look at the conjunction in the second half! If you see 都, you are excluding \(X\). If you see 也 or 還 / 还, you are adding \(X\) to the list.

4. Emphasis Construction 1: 連……都/也…… / 连……都/也……

This structure expresses extreme emphasis, equivalent to the English "even...". It highlights an extreme or unexpected case to prove a broader point: if even this extreme case is true, everything else naturally follows!

The Fundamental Structure

\(\text{Subject} + \text{連/连} + \text{Extreme Item} + \text{都 / 也} + \text{Verb / Predicate}\)
or (bringing the extreme item to the front):
\(\text{連/连} + \text{Extreme Item} + \text{Subject} + \text{都 / 也} + \text{Verb / Predicate}\)

A. Emphasising a Noun (Direct Object or Subject)

When the object is being emphasised, it is brought forward right after 連 / 连:

• Traditional: 在偏遠鄉村,過去人們連溫飽問題都難以解決。
• Simplified: 在偏远乡村,过去人们连温饱问题都难以解决。
• Meaning: In remote villages, in the past people could not even solve the problem of adequate food and clothing. (Theme 4)

B. Emphasising the Minimum Quantity: "Not even one..."

Combining 連/连 with "一 + Measure Word + Noun + 也不/都沒" forms a potent rhetorical negative:

\(\text{連/连} + \text{一} + \text{Measure Word} + \text{Noun} + \text{都 / 也} + \text{不 / 沒} + \text{Verb}\)

• Traditional: 面對巨大的學業壓力,有些學生連一點放鬆的時間都沒有。
• Simplified: 面对巨大的学业压力,有些学生连一点放松的时间都没有。
• Meaning: Faced with huge academic pressure, some students do not even have a single moment of relaxation. (Theme 1)

C. Common Mistakes to Avoid with 連……都/也

• Forgetting 都 / 也: In English, we simply say "Even he knows." In Chinese, 連 / 连 must be matched with 都 or 也 in the predicate.
• Incorrect: 連他知道這件事。
• Correct: 連他都知道這件事。/ 连他都知道这件事。

5. Emphasis Construction 2: 是……的 (Past Detail Focaliser)

The 是……的 construction is one of the most frequently tested patterns in Edexcel A Level Chinese. It is used to emphasise a specific circumstantial detail — such as time, place, manner, purpose, or agent — of an action that has already taken place.

When to Use It (and When NOT to Use It)

• The prerequisite: Both speaker and listener already know or take for granted that the action occurred. The focus is not whether the event happened, but how, when, where, why, or by whom it occurred.
• No 了 allowed: Because the completion of the action is already understood, the completion marker 了 is normally omitted inside the 是……的 structure.

The Fundamental Structure

\(\text{Subject} + (\text{是}) + \text{Detail to Emphasise [Time / Place / Manner / Agent]} + \text{Verb} + (\text{Object}) + \text{的}\)

Note: In affirmative sentences, 是 can sometimes be omitted in casual speech, but the final 的 must remain. However, in negative sentences, 不是……的 is compulsory and cannot be omitted!

Examining the Focus Categories

1. Emphasising Time (什麼時候 / 什么时候):
• Traditional: 中國的改革開放政策是在1978年開始實施的。
• Simplified: 中国的改革开放政策是在1978年开始实施的。
• Focus: Emphasises that it was in 1978 that the reform policy began. (Theme 4)

2. Emphasising Place (在哪裡 / 在哪里):
• Traditional: 這部著名電影是在中國北方農村拍攝的。
• Simplified: 这部著名电影是在中国北方农村拍摄的。
• Focus: Emphasises the rural northern setting of the filming. (Theme 2)

3. Emphasising Manner / Instrument (怎麼 / 怎么):
• Traditional: 現代年輕人大多是通過社交媒體了解新聞的。
• Simplified: 现代年轻人大多是通过社交媒体了解新闻的。
• Focus: Emphasises the means (via social media). (Theme 3)

4. Emphasising Agent / Person Responsible (誰 / 谁):
• Traditional: 這篇關於代溝的文章是由一位教育專家寫的。
• Simplified: 这篇关于代沟的文章是由一位教育专家写的。
• Focus: Emphasises the author (an education expert). (Theme 1)

Negative Form: 不是……的

Place 不是 directly before the specific element you wish to negate:

• Traditional: 他們的成功不是偶然獲得的,而是經過多年努力實現的。
• Simplified: 他们的成功不是偶然获得的,而是经过多年努力实现的。
• Meaning: Their success was not achieved by chance, but realised through years of hard work.

6. Emphasis Construction 3: 不論/無論……都…… / 不论/无论……都……

The conditional conjunction 無論 / 无论 (or 不論 / 不论) means "no matter (what / how / who / whether)" or "regardless of". It indicates that under any circumstances or conditions, the outcome or conclusion remains completely unchanged.

The Fundamental Structure

\(\text{無論/无论 / 不論/不论} + \text{Universal Condition / Alternative} + \text{都 / 也} + \text{Predicate}\)

Crucial Rule for the "Condition" Clause:
The clause following 無論 / 不論 must contain an element of variation, choice, or uncertainty. It can never be a single fixed statement! There are three standard ways to provide this variation:

1. Using Question Words (什麼、誰、怎麼、哪裡 / 什么、谁、怎么、哪里):
• Traditional: 無論社會如何變遷,家庭觀念在華人文化中都佔有核心地位。
• Simplified: 无论社会如何变迁,家庭观念在华人文化中都占有核心地位。
• Meaning: No matter how society changes, the concept of family holds a central position in Chinese culture. (Theme 1)

2. Using Alternatives with 還是 / 还是 (A or B):
• Traditional: 不論是城市還是農村,環境保護都至關重要。
• Simplified: 不论是城市还是农村,环境保护都至关重要。
• Meaning: Regardless of whether it is the city or the countryside, environmental protection is vital. (Theme 3)

3. Using Affirmative-Negative Pairs (A 不 A):
• Traditional: 無論工作環境艱苦與否(好不好),他都堅持履行職責。
• Simplified: 无论工作环境艰苦与否(好不好),他都坚持履行职责。
• Meaning: Regardless of whether the working environment is difficult or not, he insists on fulfilling his duties.

Memory Trick:
Think of 無論 / 不論 as a lock that requires a key: the lock is the conditional clause, but it will not turn unless you pair it with 都 (or 也) in the main clause!

7. Synthesising Constructions in A Level Assessment

To achieve high marks in AO3 across Paper 2 and Paper 3, aim to integrate these sentence patterns naturally into your arguments rather than relying solely on simple Subject + Verb + Object statements.

Comparative Analysis Example (Paper 2 Essay / Paper 3 Discussion)

• Traditional:
在分析當代教育議題時,我們可以看到,除了學業成績以外,學生的心理健康也備受關注。然而,無論學校採取什麼措施,如果家庭缺乏理解,學生連最基本的傾訴渠道都會失去。事實上,許多心理問題是在長期忽視中積累起來的。
• Simplified:
在分析当代教育议题时,我们可以看到,除了学业成绩以外,学生的心理健康也备受关注。然而,无论学校采取什么措施,如果家庭缺乏理解,学生连最基本的倾诉渠道都会失去。事实上,许多心理问题是在长期忽视中积累起来的。
• Look at the range of structures used here:
1. 除了……以外……也…… (Exclusion/Inclusion)
2. 無論……什麼……都…… (Unconditional emphasis)
3. 連……都…… (Extreme emphasis)
4. 是……的 (Focus on origin/manner of completed action)

Chapter Checklist and Quick Review

• Comparative (比): Never put 很, 非常, or 十分 after 比. Place qualifiers like 得多, 一點兒, or number phrases at the very end.
• Comparative (不如 / 沒有): Use these for "not as... as" inferior comparisons.
• Existence: Place Phrase + Verb + 著/了 + Indefinite Noun. Do not start with 在.
• 除了……以外: Paired with 都 = "except for". Paired with 也 / 還 = "in addition to".
• 連……都/也: Emphasises an extreme example. Must be followed by 都 or 也 before the verb.
• 是……的: Emphasises the time, place, manner, or agent of an action that already happened. Do not add 了.
• 無論 / 不論……都: Expresses "no matter what/whether". The first clause must contain a question word, an A-not-A construction, or 還是.
