3. Transactional: Objective, functional, and expository writing using specialised, formal, and impersonal lexis (e.g., instructions, factual reports).
Joan Rothery's Genre Model (1980s):
Rothery outlined how primary school writing develops across four distinct genres, each requiring specific lexical choices:
1. Observation / Comment: Simple descriptive statements paired with personal evaluative comments (e.g., "I saw a lion. It was scary.").
2. Recount: Chronological, personal accounts of events using temporal connectives and past-tense action verbs.
3. Report: Non-chronological factual descriptions requiring objective, categorised, and factual nominals.
4. Narrative: Complex storytelling structures featuring orientation, complication, and resolution, demanding rich evaluative and descriptive vocabulary.

• Scaffolding: Providing structured verbal support during joint activities (e.g., pointing in picture books).
• Recasting: Repeating the child's utterance while substituting more accurate lexical items.
• Expansions: Elaborating on the child's short utterance into a semantically richer phrase.
4. Lev Vygotsky (Zone of Proximal Development & Scaffolding):
Vygotsky highlighted the role of the More Knowledgeable Other (MKO) (such as a parent, teacher, or older sibling). MKOs support children within their Zone of Proximal Development (ZPD)—the gap between the vocabulary a child can produce independently and the advanced words they can comprehend and use with guidance.
