1. The Four Core Theories of Language Acquisition

Linguists have long debated how children manage to learn something as complex as human language in just a few short years. To master Component 2, you need to know the four major theoretical models, their key champions, and their strengths and limitations.


Model 1: The Nativist / Innatist Model (Noam Chomsky & Eric Lenneberg)

Core Concept: We are born hardwired for language.

Key Theorists: Noam Chomsky, Eric Lenneberg (1967).

How It Works:
Chomsky argued that human brains possess an innate, biologically determined mechanism called the Language Acquisition Device (LAD). According to Chomsky, children do not start as blank slates; instead, they are born with an inbuilt framework called Universal Grammar (UG)—a set of foundational grammatical principles common to all human languages.

Key Arguments and Evidence:
Poverty of the Stimulus: Chomsky noted that the everyday spoken language children hear is often messy, fragmented, and full of false starts or slips of the tongue. Despite this "imperfect" input, children still master complex grammar rapidly and without explicit teaching.
Virtuous Errors (Overregularisation): When young children say things like "I runned", "two feets", or "he holded it", they are not imitating adults. Instead, they are actively applying regular grammatical rules (such as adding the inflectional past-tense suffix -ed) to irregular forms. This proves they possess internalised grammatical systems!
The Wug Test (Jean Berko Gleason, 1958): Gleason showed children a picture of an imaginary bird-like creature called a "Wug". When shown two of them, children naturally stated there were two "Wugs" (/wʌgz/). Because the word was completely novel, the children could not have been imitating; they were applying an innate morphological rule.
The Critical Period Hypothesis (Eric Lenneberg): Lenneberg proposed that the LAD must be stimulated during a biologically sensitive window—from infancy to puberty. If a child is not exposed to language during this critical window, full native grammatical fluency becomes virtually impossible to achieve.

Limitations to Remember: Chomsky focused heavily on syntactic structures (grammar) and largely downplayed the vital role of social interaction, caregiver support, and communicative context.

Memory Trick: Think of the LAD as a pre-installed computer operating system: the hardware is already in the brain, ready to process incoming linguistic data!


Model 2: The Behaviourist Model (B.F. Skinner)

Core Concept: Language is a learned behaviour acquired through nurture and imitation.

Key Theorist: B.F. Skinner.

How It Works:
Skinner suggested that children learn language through operant conditioning, imitation, and reinforcement:
Imitation: The child copies words and sounds spoken by adult models.
Positive Reinforcement: When a child produces an accurate utterance (e.g., saying "Milk") and receives praise, smiles, or the requested drink, the successful behaviour is reinforced and repeated.
Negative Reinforcement / Correction: When a child produces an error, non-understanding or corrective feedback discourages the incorrect form.

Limitations to Remember:
• It cannot explain the infinite variety of novel sentences children create that they have never heard before.
• It fails to account for virtuous errors (e.g., "mouses" or "breaked"), which adults do not model.
• Children frequently resist explicit grammatical corrections from caregivers, continuing to use developmental forms until their internal grammar matures.


Model 3: The Cognitive Constructivist Model (Jean Piaget & Lev Vygotsky)

Core Concept: Language development is tied to intellectual growth and social problem-solving.

Key Theorists: Jean Piaget, Lev Vygotsky.

Piaget's Cognitive Stages:
Piaget argued that a child cannot use a linguistic concept until they cognitively understand the real-world concept behind it.
Sensorimotor Stage (0–2 years): The infant explores the world through physical senses. A crucial milestone here is object permanence (understanding that objects still exist even when out of sight). Once object permanence is achieved, children experience a surge in naming/labeling words (e.g., "gone", "bye-bye", "ball").
Pre-operational Stage (2–7 years): Characterised by egocentric speech (talking from their own perspective), symbolic play, and classification of objects.
Concrete Operational Stage (7–11 years): Children develop logical thought and the ability to process concrete events, expanding their capacity for complex syntactic coordination and subordination.

Vygotsky's Social Constructivism:
Zone of Proximal Development (ZPD): The gap between what a child can achieve completely independently and what they can achieve with supportive guidance.
More Knowledgeable Other (MKO): Any person (parent, teacher, older sibling) who has a higher understanding than the learner and helps bridge this gap through collaborative dialogue.


Model 4: The Social Interactionist Model (Jerome Bruner & Catherine Snow)

Core Concept: Language develops through meaningful social interactions with responsive caregivers.

Key Theorists: Jerome Bruner, Catherine Snow.

How It Works:
Bruner agreed that humans have an innate capacity for language, but argued that Chomsky's LAD is useless without a Language Acquisition Support System (LASS)—the structured environmental support provided by caregivers.

Key Interactionist Mechanisms:
Scaffolding: Temporary, supportive frameworks provided by adults (such as structured bedtime routines, shared book reading, and conversational turn-taking) that are gradually removed as the child gains competence.
Child-Directed Speech (CDS) / Caregiver Language: The specially modified language adults use when talking to infants and toddlers.

Features of Child-Directed Speech (CDS) to Look for in Exam Transcripts:
Phonological Features: Higher pitch, exaggerated melodic intonation contours, elongated vowels, slower tempo, and clear pauses.
Lexical & Semantic Features: Diminutives with repetitive phonology (e.g., "doggie", "blankie", "tummy"), frequent repetition of concrete nouns, restricted semantic fields.
Syntactic Features: Short, simple sentence structures (fewer subordinate clauses), high frequency of interrogatives (especially tag questions like "That's a big truck, isn't it?"), framing devices, and imperatives.
Expansions: The adult fills in missing grammatical elements of a child's utterance (e.g., Child: "Dog bark" \(\implies\) Adult: "Yes, the dog is barking loudly!").
Recasting: The adult rephrases the child's utterance into a grammatically standard form without explicitly criticising the child (e.g., Child: "I falled over" \(\implies\) Adult: "Oh no, you fell over? Let me check your knee").

2. Functional Approaches: Michael Halliday

Rather than just looking at the grammar of an utterance, linguist Michael Halliday asked: What is the child trying to achieve with their language?

Halliday identified seven early pragmatic functions used by children before and during early grammatical development:

1. Instrumental Function: Language used to satisfy concrete physical needs or desires.
Example: "Want juice" or "Gimme teddy."

2. Regulatory Function: Language used to control the behaviour of others (commands, requests, instructions).
Example: "Pick me up!" or "Go away!"

3. Interactional Function: Language used to establish, build, and maintain social relationships.
Example: "Love you Mummy", "Hiya", "Bye-bye."

4. Personal Function: Language used to express personal feelings, unique preferences, opinions, and individual identity.
Example: "Me good boy" or "I like green."

5. Heuristic Function: Language used to explore, question, and learn about the surrounding environment.
Example: "What that is?" or "Why sky blue?"

6. Imaginative Function: Language used to create pretend scenarios, role-play, jokes, and storytelling.
Example: "I'm the scary dragon, roar!"

7. Informative / Representational Function: Language used to communicate objective facts, convey information, or state propositions.
Example: "It's raining outside" or "The cat is on the sofa."

Memory Mnemonic: Remember I-R-I-P-H-I-I: Instrumental, Regulatory, Interactional, Personal, Heuristic, Imaginative, Informative.


3. Spoken Language: Developmental Stages and Linguistic Processes

A. Pre-Verbal & Phonological Development

Before producing recognizable words, infants progress through predictable pre-verbal stages:
Vegetative / Reflexive Stage (0–2 months): Involuntary sounds such as crying, burping, coughing, and sucking.
Cooing & Vocal Play (2–5 months): Short vocalizations dominated by open vowel sounds (/u/, /a/) and velar consonant-like sounds (/k/, /g/).
Babbling Stage (6–12 months): Extended syllable patterns. Begins with canonical/reduplicated babbling (repeating the same consonant-vowel string: "ba-ba-ba", "ma-ma-ma") and advances to variegated/non-reduplicated babbling (mixing different vowels and consonants: "ba-da-ma").

Phonological Simplification Processes:
Young children's vocal tracts are still developing physically. When faced with sounds they find articulatory challenging, they use systematic simplification strategies:
Deletion (Omission): Dropping the final consonant sound of a word (e.g., "ca" instead of "cat").
Substitution: Swapping a difficult sound for an easier one (e.g., "wabbit" for "rabbit", replacing the liquid /r/ with glide /w/).
Assimilation: One sound changes to match or harmonise with another nearby sound in the word (e.g., "goggie" instead of "doggie").
Consonant Cluster Reduction: Simplifying difficult consonant blends down to a single consonant (e.g., "pider" for "spider", "funder" for "thunder", "pane" for "plane").
Reduplication: Repeating a whole syllable (e.g., "choo-choo", "din-din").


B. Grammar and Lexis Development Stages

As children move into spoken words and syntax, their speech passes through distinct structural phases:

1. Holophrastic Stage (12–18 months):
Single-word utterances (holophrases). A single word carries the communicative weight of an entire sentence, heavily supported by physical gesture, prosodic pitch, and situational context.
Example: Saying "Juice!" with rising intonation can mean "Give me some juice right now!"

2. Two-Word Stage (18–24 months):
Children combine two lexical words to form mini-grammatical relationships (often following basic semantic relations like Agent + Action, Action + Object, or Entity + Attribute). Functional words are still omitted.
Examples: "Daddy go" (Agent + Action), "Kick ball" (Action + Object), "Big dog" (Attribute + Entity).

3. Telegraphic Stage (24–36 months):
Utterances expand to 3 to 4 words. Like an old-fashioned telegram message, the child retains high-value content words (nouns, main verbs, descriptive adjectives) while omitting low-value grammatical functor words (determiners, auxiliary verbs, prepositions, copula verbs).
Example: "Teddy drink milk now" (omitting "is" and "the").

4. Post-Telegraphic Stage (36+ months):
Speech rapidly approaches adult grammar. Inflectional bound morphemes appear consistently, auxiliary verbs ("is", "can", "did") and determiners ("a", "the") are integrated, and children coordinate clauses (using coordinating and subordinating conjunctions: "and", "because", "so").


C. Roger Brown's Morphemic Sequence & Mean Length of Utterance (MLU)

In 1973, linguist Roger Brown discovered that children acquire grammatical morphemes in a remarkably consistent chronological order, regardless of their native background:

• 1. Present progressive inflection (-ing)
• 2. Prepositions (in, on)
• 3. Regular plural inflection (-s)
• 4. Irregular past tense forms (e.g., went, came)
• 5. Possessive inflection ('s)
• 6. Uncontractible copula (e.g., "Is it ready?" - main verb is cannot be shortened)
• 7. Articles / Determiners (a, the)
• 8. Regular past tense inflection (-ed)
• 9. 3rd person regular present tense inflection (-s, e.g., "she runs")
• 10. 3rd person irregular present tense forms (e.g., does, has)
• 11. Uncontractible auxiliary (e.g., "Is he coming?" - helping verb is cannot be shortened)
• 12. Contractible copula (e.g., "She's tall")
• 13. Contractible auxiliary (e.g., "He's running")

Calculating Mean Length of Utterance (MLU):
Linguists measure a child's grammatical complexity by calculating their MLU rather than simply counting chronological age. The formula is:

\( \text{MLU} = \frac{\text{Total Number of Morphemes}}{\text{Total Number of Utterances}} \)

Example: If a child says "Daddy kicked balls", this contains 5 morphemes: [Daddy] + [kick] + [-ed] + [ball] + [-s]. Higher MLU scores correlate with more advanced grammatical development.


D. Semantic Development: Overextension and Underextension

As children build their mental lexicon, they work out the boundaries of word meanings (studied by Eve Clark and Leslie Rescorla):

Overextension: A child uses a word too broadly to label objects outside its true semantic category.
- Categorical Overextension: Applying a hypernym/hyponym incorrectly based on category (e.g., calling every 4-legged animal a "dog").
- Analogical Overextension: Applying a word based on shared physical attributes, appearance, or function (e.g., calling a round white football, a plate, and the full moon "ball").
- Predicate / Relational Statements: Using a word associated with an object's typical context (e.g., seeing an empty garden kennel and saying "dog").

Underextension: A child applies a word too narrowly (e.g., believing the word "shoes" applies only to their own red trainers, and refusing to call anyone else's footwear "shoes").


4. Written Language Development: Orthography, Graphology, and Genre

When analysing early literacy (reading and child writing samples in the exam), apply these structured developmental frameworks:


A. Richard Gentry's 5 Stages of Spelling Development

Children do not master English orthography overnight; they move through five distinct stages:

1. Pre-communicative Stage: The child scribbles or writes random strings of letters, symbols, or numbers. There is no understanding of grapheme-phoneme correspondence (no connection between the letter symbol and the speech sound).

2. Semi-phonetic Stage: The child realizes letters represent sounds. They use abbreviated spellings, usually representing words using 1 to 3 prominent consonant sounds (e.g., writing "MTR" for monster, or "U" for you).

3. Phonetic Stage: The child represents every sound they hear in a word systematically using phonics. Spellings reflect pronunciation directly (e.g., writing "wuz" for was, "kom" for come, "flog" for frog).

4. Transitional Stage: The child combines phonetic awareness with visual memory of spelling conventions. They begin to include silent letters, double consonants, and vowel digraphs, though occasionally in the wrong positions (e.g., "egul" for eagle, "crose" for cross, "hi-ked" for hiked).

5. Conventional Stage: The child has mastered standard English orthographical rules, prefixes, suffixes, and irregular spelling patterns.


B. Graphology & Emergent Writing Conventions

In written data tasks, make sure you evaluate graphological and layout features:
Directionality: Understanding that English text moves from left-to-right and top-to-bottom across the page.
Letter Casing: Mixed use of upper-case (capital) and lower-case letters within words (e.g., "mOnStEr"), showing emergent awareness of letter shapes.
Baseline Orientation & Alignment: Writing staying consistently on ruled guidelines versus floating across the page.
Ascenders & Descenders: Formation of tall strokes (like b, d, t, h) and downward tail strokes (like p, g, y, j).
Spacing: Introduction of distinct word boundaries / finger-spacing.
Emergent Punctuation: Early use of full stops, capital letters, exclamation marks, or question marks.


C. Discourse and Genre Theories of Child Writing

Joan Rothery's Categories of Early Writing:
Observation / Comment: The child makes an observation followed by an evaluative comment (e.g., "I saw a big dog. It was fluffy.").
Recount: A chronological sequence of real personal events (e.g., "First we went to the zoo, then we ate chips.").
Report: A factual, non-chronological description of an object, animal, or topic (e.g., "Castles have moats and high stone walls.").
Narrative: A structured story following a classic narrative arc: Orientation \(\implies\) Complication \(\implies\) Resolution.

James Britton's Functional Writing Modes:
Expressive: First-person writing that directly reflects the child's own feelings, personal identity, and everyday voice.
Poetic: Creative, crafted writing using literary and aesthetic features (rhymes, sensory descriptions, character dialogue).
Transactional: Objective, functional communication designed to achieve a real-world outcome (instructions, persuasive letters, science write-ups).


5. Examiner Tips & Avoiding Common Pitfalls in Paper 2

Here are crucial examiner insights taken directly from Pearson Edexcel examiners' reports:

Avoid "Theorist Dumping": Never write an isolated paragraph explaining Chomsky, Skinner, or Bruner without anchoring it to specific quotes or words from the exam data. Always use the Point \(\implies\) Evidence (Quote) \(\implies\) Analysis (Linguistic term) \(\implies\) Theoretical Link / Evaluation structure.

Never Call Virtuous Errors "Stupid Mistakes": If a child writes "I catched" or says "two sheeps", praise the child's linguistic competence! Identify it as an overregularisation / virtuous error demonstrating internalised morphological rule application.

Always Address Context (AO3): Who is speaking to the child? What is the physical setting? Is there a parent providing scaffolding or recasting? How does the context shape the child's MLU or discourse confidence?

Use Precise Linguistic Terminology (AO1):
- Instead of saying "child baby talk", write reduplicated babbling or phonological substitution.
- Instead of saying "words left out", write telegraphic stage omission of grammatical functors / determiners.
- Instead of saying "bad spelling", write phonetic spelling reflecting emergent grapheme-phoneme correspondence (Gentry).
