Ever wondered why people in the UK talk about the weather so much? It’s because our climate is incredibly varied and changes all the time! In this chapter, we are going to look at the UK’s distinct climate, why different parts of the country have different weather, and how our climate has shifted over the last 1000 years.

This is a key part of Paper 1, Topic 2. While other chapters look at global systems or tropical storms, this one brings it all home to the UK.

1. What is the UK's Climate?

First, let’s get our definitions right. Weather is what is happening outside right now (is it raining? is it sunny?). Climate is the average weather recorded over a long period of time (usually \(30\) years).

The UK has what we call a Temperate Maritime climate.
Temperate means it is moderate — we don't usually get "extreme" heat or "extreme" cold compared to other countries.
Maritime means our weather is strongly influenced by the sea.

Why is the UK’s climate like this?

There are four main reasons why the UK feels the way it does:

1. Latitude: The UK is located between \(50^\circ N\) and \(60^\circ N\) of the equator. This means we are far enough north to be cool, but far enough south to avoid the freezing conditions of the Arctic.

2. The North Atlantic Drift: This is a warm ocean current that travels across the Atlantic from the Gulf of Mexico. It acts like a giant radiator, keeping the UK much warmer in winter than it should be for its position on the map.

3. Prevailing Winds: Most of our wind comes from the South-West. Because these winds travel over the warm Atlantic Ocean, they bring moisture (rain) and mild temperatures.

4. Distance from the sea: No part of the UK is more than \(120\)km from the sea. The sea takes a long time to heat up and cool down, which stops the UK from getting too hot in summer or too cold in winter.

2. Regional Variations: Why is it different in the North or West?

The UK is small, but the weather in Scotland is very different from the weather in London! Here is how it breaks down:

The North vs. The South
Generally, the South is warmer than the North. This is because the South is closer to the equator and receives more concentrated solar energy. The North is more mountainous and further north, making it cooler.

The West vs. The East
The West is wetter than the East. Why? Because the prevailing winds from the South-West hit the mountains in the West (like in Wales or the Lake District). The air is forced to rise, cools, condenses, and forms rain. This is called relief rainfall. By the time the wind reaches the East, it has lost most of its moisture.

3. UK Climate Change: The Last 1000 Years

The Little Ice Age (c. \(1300\) – \(1850\))

After the warm period, temperatures dropped. This was a much colder era.
Example: The River Thames in London froze over so thick that people held "Frost Fairs" on the ice, complete with shops, ice skating, and even elephant parades! Winters were much longer, and crops often failed because of the cold.

The Modern Era (\(1900\) – Present)

Since the industrial revolution, temperatures have been rising rapidly.
• The UK's average temperature has risen by about \(1^\circ C\) since the year \(1900\).
• While the Medieval Warm Period and Little Ice Age were likely caused by natural factors (like solar activity or volcanoes), modern warming is primarily due to human activity (greenhouse gases). (Note: You can learn more about these causes in Topic 2.2 and 2.3).

4. Working with Data (Geography Skills)

In the exam, you might be asked to look at a climate graph for a UK city. Don't worry, they are easy to read if you remember these two rules:

1. The Bars = Precipitation (Rain): These show how much rain falls in each month.
2. The Line = Temperature: This shows how the heat changes through the year.

Common Mistake: Students often mix up the two axes. Always check which side of the graph shows \(^\circ C\) (temperature) and which side shows \(mm\) (rainfall)!
