Note: This topic is part of Topic 3: Ecosystems, biodiversity and management. While you might have already learned about global ecosystems in general, here we are zooming in specifically on the tropical rainforest.

1. Characteristics of the Rainforest (3.4)

To understand the rainforest, we need to look at two main parts: the biotic (living) and abiotic (non-living) components. In a rainforest, these parts are closely linked—if you change one, it affects all the others!

Abiotic Characteristics (The Non-Living Stuff)

  • Climate: It is hot and wet all year round. Temperatures usually stay around \(27^{\circ}C\), and they receive over \(2000mm\) of rain every year. There are no "seasons" like we have in the UK; it's basically one long, hot summer.
  • Soil: Surprisingly, rainforest soil (called latosol) is actually quite poor in nutrients! This is because the heavy rain washes nutrients away (a process called leaching). Most nutrients are stored in the trees themselves.

Biotic Characteristics (The Living Stuff)

Rainforests have a clear structure made of four layers. Think of it like a giant green apartment block:

  1. Emergents: The tallest trees (up to \(50m\)) that poke out above the rest to get the most sunlight.
  2. Canopy: A thick "umbrella" of leaves that absorbs about \(80\%\) of the sunlight and shades the layers below.
  3. Undercanopy: Younger trees and plants like Lianas (woody vines) that wait for a gap in the canopy to grow.
  4. Forest Floor: Very dark and damp. This is where decomposers (fungi and insects) break down fallen leaves incredibly quickly.

2. Goods and Services (3.5)

Geographers split the benefits of the rainforest into two categories: Goods and Services. A simple way to remember the difference is: Goods are things you can physically touch or put in a shopping basket. Services are the "jobs" the forest does for us.

Rainforest Goods

  • Food: Items like cocoa (for chocolate), coffee, nuts, and fruits.
  • Medicine: Over \(25\%\) of modern medicines come from rainforest plants. For example, ingredients for treating childhood leukaemia.
  • Raw Materials: High-quality timber (mahogany and teak) for furniture, and rubber from sap.

Rainforest Services

  • Carbon Sink: The trees "breathe in" Carbon Dioxide (\(CO_{2}\)), which helps to slow down global warming.
  • Water Cycle: Trees release water vapour into the air (transpiration), which creates clouds and rain. Without trees, the area would turn into a desert.
  • Biodiversity: They are home to over \(50\%\) of all the world's plant and animal species.

3. Threats to the Rainforest (3.5)

The biggest threat is deforestation (clearing the forest). In our named region (the Amazon Rainforest in South America), this is happening for several reasons:

  • Cattle Ranching: This is the biggest cause in the Amazon. Large areas are cleared to make room for cows to provide beef for the global market.
  • Commercial Farming: Huge plantations grow crops like soybeans or palm oil.
  • Logging: Cutting down trees for timber to sell abroad.
  • Mining: Digging for minerals like gold or iron ore. This often involves clearing the forest and polluting nearby rivers with chemicals.
  • Infrastructure: Building roads (like the Trans-Amazonian Highway) to reach remote areas. This makes it easier for more people to enter and clear the forest.

Common Mistake: Don't just say "people cutting down trees." To get higher marks, name the specific reason, such as "cattle ranching to meet global demand for beef."

4. Management of the Rainforest (3.5)

How do we protect the rainforest while still allowing people to earn a living? This is called sustainable management.

Sustainable Strategies

  • Ecotourism: Small-scale tourism that doesn't hurt the environment. Local people work as guides instead of loggers, so the forest is worth more "alive" than "dead."
  • Selective Logging: Instead of "clear-felling" (cutting everything), only a few old trees are taken. This allows the canopy to stay intact so the ecosystem can recover.
  • Debt-for-Nature Swaps: Wealthier countries agree to "forgive" or cancel the debt of a developing country if they promise to protect their rainforest instead.
  • International Agreements: Countries can sign treaties to stop the trade in "illegal timber" or endangered species.
