Introduction to Hydration

We all know we need to drink water, but for a GCSE PE student, it is important to understand why water is so critical for a performer and what happens to the body when we don't get enough. Whether you are a marathon runner or a casual walker, staying hydrated is the key to keeping your body working safely and efficiently.
What is Hydration?
Hydration means having enough water in your body to enable it to function correctly. Our bodies are made up of about \( 60\% \) to \( 70\% \) water, so it is no surprise that even a small drop in water levels can cause big problems.
In your exam, you might see water listed alongside fibre as a key part of a balanced diet. While it doesn't provide "energy" like carbohydrates, it is a micronutrient that is essential for life and physical activity.
The Role of Water in Physical Activity
When we exercise, our body uses water for several "jobs" that help us keep going. Don't worry if these seem scientific; think of water as the "oil" in an engine that keeps everything running smoothly:
- Temperature Regulation: When you work hard, your body gets hot. To cool down, you sweat. This sweat evaporates off your skin, taking the heat with it. Without water, you can't sweat, and you might overheat.
- Transportation: Water is a huge part of your blood. It helps transport oxygen and nutrients (like glucose) to your working muscles and carries away waste products (like carbon dioxide).
- Lubrication: Water helps keep your joints moving easily and protects your organs.

How Dehydration Affects Sporting Performance
This is the part most likely to come up in your exam. You need to be able to explain why being dehydrated makes a performer play worse. Here is the step-by-step logic:
1. Increased Blood Viscosity
Viscosity is just a fancy word for how "thick" or "sticky" a liquid is. When you are dehydrated, there is less water in your blood. This makes the blood thicker (increased viscosity).
The Result: The heart has to work much harder to pump this "thick" blood through your veins and to your muscles. This increases your heart rate and makes you feel exhausted faster.
2. Reduced Sweating and Overheating
If you don't have enough water, your body stops sweating to try and save the fluid it has left.
The Result: Your core body temperature rises. This can lead to heat exhaustion or even heat stroke, which is very dangerous during sport.
3. Slower Reaction Times
The brain needs water to send signals to the muscles effectively.
The Result: Your decision-making becomes "foggy" and your reaction time slows down. For example, a goalkeeper might be too slow to react to a shot because their brain is struggling with dehydration.
4. Muscle Cramps
Water helps balance electrolytes in the muscles.
The Result: Without enough water, muscles can tighten up painfully, known as cramping, which might force a player to stop altogether.
