Welcome to the World of Research Methods!
In your Psychology journey, you have already looked at experiments where researchers change things to see what happens. But what if we want to see how people behave naturally? Or what if we want to study someone who is completely unique? That is where Observations, Content Analysis, and Case Studies come in.
These methods allow psychologists to gather rich, detailed information that a standard experiment might miss. Don’t worry if some of these terms seem like a mouthful at first—we will break them down step-by-step!
1. Observations: The "Watching" Method
An observation is simply watching and recording behavior. Instead of asking people how they feel (like in a questionnaire), we watch what they actually do. In the Edexcel syllabus, you need to know several different ways these are carried out.
Types of Observation
Psychologists categorize observations in three main ways:
- Naturalistic vs. Structured:
— Naturalistic: Watching behavior in its real-world setting (like watching children play at a local park). The researcher does not interfere.
— Structured: The researcher sets up a specific situation or environment (like a play laboratory) to see how people react. - Overt vs. Covert:
— Overt: Participants know they are being watched.
— Covert: The researcher is hidden or the participants are unaware they are being observed (undercover). - Participant vs. Non-participant:
— Participant: The researcher joins in with the group they are studying.
— Non-participant: The researcher stays outside the group and watches from a distance.
How do we record what we see?
If you just sat and watched someone for an hour, you would have pages of notes! To make it scientific, researchers use specific techniques:
1. Tallying: Researchers use a check-list (behavioral categories). Every time a behavior happens (e.g., "smiling"), the researcher puts a mark \(/\) on their sheet. At the end, they sum the marks to get a total frequency \(f\).
2. Event Sampling: You record every single time a specific behavior (the "event") happens during the whole observation.
Example: Counting every time a student raises their hand during a 60-minute lesson.
3. Time Sampling: You only record behavior at specific time intervals.
Example: Looking at a student every 5 minutes and recording what they are doing at that exact moment.
Quick Tip:
A common mistake is confusing Event and Time sampling. Remember: Event = "Every time it happens," Time = "At set time ticks."
2. Content Analysis: Studying the Media
Content Analysis is a research tool used to indirectly observe behavior by examining the things people produce, such as television adverts, newspapers, or social media posts.
How to conduct a Content Analysis:
- Select the sample: Decide what you are looking at (e.g., every front page of a newspaper for one week).
- Identify Coding Categories: Decide what you are looking for (e.g., how many times a specific word or image appears).
- Tally the occurrences: Go through the material and count how many times your categories appear. This turns qualitative data (words/images) into quantitative data (numbers).
Thematic Analysis
Sometimes, psychologists don't want to just count numbers; they want to find "themes." This is called Thematic Analysis.
— It is a qualitative method.
— Researchers look for recurring patterns or "themes" in the data (like "feelings of isolation" in a set of interviews).
— This is mentioned in Topic A (Social Psychology) and Topic I (Psychological Skills).
3. Case Studies: The "Deep Dive"
A Case Study is an in-depth, detailed investigation of a single individual or a small group. They are often used when a researcher finds someone with a unique characteristic or a rare brain injury.
Key Examples from your Syllabus:
- Henry Molaison (HM): In Topic B (Cognitive Psychology), you study HM. Because of surgery to his brain, he could not form new memories. Psychologists studied him for decades to understand how memory works.
- Freud: In Topic D (Learning Theories), you learn that Sigmund Freud used case studies (like the famous "Little Hans") to develop his theories on personality.
Strengths and Weaknesses of Case Studies
Strength: They provide incredibly rich, detailed (qualitative) data that experiments cannot reach. They allow us to study things that would be unethical to cause in a lab (like brain damage).
Weakness: Because they focus on one unique person, it is very hard to generalize the findings to the rest of the population. Also, researchers may become too involved, losing their objectivity.
Summary Table: Which Method When?
Observation: Best for seeing how people act in the moment. (Uses tallying, event/time sampling).
Content Analysis: Best for studying communication and media. (Turns words into numbers).
Case Study: Best for unique, rare, or complex individual cases. (In-depth and detailed).
Common Exam Pitfalls to Avoid
1. Mistaking Observation for Experiment: If the researcher isn't changing an Independent Variable (IV) to see the effect on a Dependent Variable (DV), it’s an observation, not an experiment!
2. Forgetting Ethics: Always remember that Covert observations (where people don't know they are being watched) raise ethical issues regarding Informed Consent. (You will cover this more in the Ethics chapter).
3. Subjectivity: In Case Studies and Thematic Analysis, be aware that the researcher’s own opinions might influence the results. We call this subjectivity.
Did you know?
The case of HM (Henry Molaison) is one of the most famous in psychology history! By observing his inability to move memories from his "Short-Term Memory" to his "Long-Term Memory," researchers were able to prove that these two stores are actually separate parts of the brain. This supports the Multi-Store Model of Memory you learn about in Topic B!
