Welcome to Synoptic Evaluation!
In this chapter, we are going to learn how to become "Psychological Critics." Instead of just looking at one study or theory at a time, we are going to look at how they all fit together across the whole course. This is called synoptic evaluation. It’s like being a judge on a talent show—you aren't just looking at one singer; you are comparing their performance to everyone else's and checking if they followed the rules!
For your Unit 4 exam, you need to apply these "evaluative tools" to everything you’ve learned in Topics A, B, C, D, E, and H. (Remember: Topics F and G are excluded from this synoptic section, so don't worry about them here!)
1. The Evaluator’s Toolkit: Methodological Issues
When we evaluate a study, we look at how it was designed. Was it a "strong" piece of science? We use specific terms to judge this. Don't worry if these seem like big words; we will break them down into simple ideas.
Generalisability
Generalisability is all about whether the results from a small group of people (the sample) can be applied to everyone else.
Analogy: If you taste one spoonful of soup and it’s salty, you generalise that the whole pot is salty. But if you only tasted a crouton, your "sample" might not represent the whole pot!
- High Generalisability: Large, diverse samples (e.g., Van IJzendoorn and Kroonenberg’s meta-analysis of attachment across different cultures).
- Low Generalisability: Small or unique samples (e.g., Case studies like HM in Topic B, who had unique brain damage that most people don't have).
Reliability
Reliability means consistency. If you did the study again, would you get the same result?
To be reliable, a study needs a standardised procedure (the same steps every time).
Example: Burger (2009) followed Milgram’s original procedure very closely to see if he could replicate the results. Because the steps were clear, the study is highly reliable.
Validity
Validity is about truth. Does the study actually measure what it says it’s measuring? There are three types you need to know:
- Internal Validity: Did the researcher control extraneous variables? If they did, we can be sure the change in the Independent Variable (IV) caused the change in the Dependent Variable (DV).
- Ecological Validity: Does the study mimic real life? A lab experiment might have low ecological validity because it's an artificial environment. (e.g., Moscovici's blue-green slides task is not something people do in real life!)
- Predictive Validity: Can the results help us predict future behavior? (e.g., Does a diagnosis of Schizophrenia using the DSM-V correctly predict which treatment will work?)
Objectivity vs. Subjectivity
- Objectivity: Keeping personal feelings out of it. Using facts and data. (e.g., Raine et al. (1997) used PET scans, which are objective because a machine produces the data).
- Subjectivity: Based on personal interpretation. (e.g., Thematic analysis or Freud’s dream analysis, where the researcher has to "guess" or "interpret" the meaning).
Credibility
Credibility is the "believability" of the research. If a study is objective, reliable, and has high validity, it is considered highly credible.

2. Evaluating Theories
Evaluating a theory is slightly different from evaluating a study. When we look at a theory (like Social Learning Theory or Agency Theory), we ask: "Does this really explain human behavior?"
Reductionism vs. Holism
- Reductionism: Breaking complex behavior down into simple parts.
Example: Explaining aggression purely through genes or neurotransmitters (Topic C) is reductionist because it ignores the environment. - Holism: Looking at the "whole person" and all the factors combined.
Nature vs. Nurture
This is the classic debate!
Nature = Biology, genes, and brain structure (Topic C).
Nurture = Environment, upbringing, and learning (Topic D).
Synoptic Tip: Most modern psychologists prefer an interactionist approach, which says both nature and nurture work together.
Psychology as a Science
Does the theory use scientific methods?
Biological Psychology (Topic C) and Cognitive Psychology (Topic B) are usually seen as very scientific because they use experiments and brain scans.
The Psychodynamic approach (Topic D) is often seen as less scientific because concepts like the "unconscious mind" are hard to test.
3. Ethical Issues: The Moral Compass
When evaluating studies synoptically, we must always look at whether they were ethical. The syllabus requires you to know specific standards.
Human Ethics
- BPS Code of Ethics (2009): These are the UK rules for psychologists. Key points include informed consent, protection from harm, confidentiality, and right to withdraw.
- HCPC Guidelines: These are rules for "practitioner psychologists" (like Clinical Psychologists in Topic H). They ensure that therapists act professionally and safely with patients.
- UNCRC (1989): This protects children's rights. Researchers in Developmental Psychology (Topic E) must balance a child's right to protection with their right to participate in research.
Animal Ethics
Psychologists sometimes use animals (like Pavlov’s dogs or Skinner’s pigeons in Topic D). We must follow:
- Scientific Procedures Act (1986): This regulates how animals are used in labs.
- Home Office Regulations: Researchers must have a license and prove that the potential "good" of the research outweighs any harm to the animals.
4. Comparing Approaches: The Big Picture
A key skill in Unit 4 is comparing different parts of psychology. You might be asked to "assess" or "evaluate" how different topics explain the same behavior.
Example Question: "Evaluate biological and learning explanations of behavior."
Comparison points:
1. Method: Biological uses PET scans (Topic C); Learning uses observations (Topic D).
2. Nature vs. Nurture: Biological is Nature; Learning is Nurture.
3. Treatment: Biological suggests drugs (Topic H); Learning suggests Systematic Desensitisation (Topic D).
5. Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Mixing up Reliability and Validity: Remember, Reliability is consistency (the same result twice), while Validity is truth (measuring what you intended).
- Ignoring the "Synoptic" bit: Don't just talk about one topic. Try to mention how an idea in Social Psychology (Topic A) might link to Clinical Psychology (Topic H).
- Forgetting Topic F and G: In Unit 4 Sections C, D, and E, you must not use examples from Criminological or Health Psychology. Stick to A, B, C, D, E, and H!
