Welcome to "Myself & My Family"!
Hello! Today we are going to learn how to talk about the most important people in your life: yourself and your family. Learning these words helps you tell your new friends who you are and who you love. Don't worry if English seems a bit new; we will take it step by step with easy words and fun patterns!
1. All About Me (ตัวเราเอง)
The first step in English is being able to introduce yourself. Here are the most important words and phrases you need to know:
Basic Information
- Name (ชื่อ): Use the phrase "My name is..." or "I am..." (Example: My name is Somchai.)
- Age (อายุ): In ป.1–ป.3, we learn numbers from \(1\) to \(50\). To say your age, use "I am... years old." (Example: I am \(8\) years old.)
- Boy / Girl (เด็กชาย / เด็กหญิง): "I am a boy" or "I am a girl."
How I Look (Appearance)
We use simple words to describe what we look like. In your lessons, we focus on size and height:
- Tall (สูง) vs. Short (เตี้ย/ตัวเล็ก)
- Big (ใหญ่/ตัวโต) vs. Small (เล็ก/ตัวเล็ก)
- Hair (ผม) and Eyes (ตา): You can use colors like black or brown. (Example: I have black hair.)
Quick Review: Try saying this out loud: "Hello! I am a boy. I am tall. My name is Bobby."
2. My Family (ครอบครัวของฉัน)
Your family members are the people who live with you or take care of you. Here are the concrete words we use for them:
The People in My House
- Father (พ่อ): Sometimes we say Dad.
- Mother (แม่): Sometimes we say Mom.
- Brother (พี่ชาย/น้องชาย): A male sibling.
- Sister (พี่สาว/น้องสาว): A female sibling.
- Grandfather (ปู่/ตา)
- Grandmother (ย่า/ยาย)
Talking About Your Family
When you want to show someone your family (like in a photo), you can use this simple pattern:
"This is my..."
- "This is my father." (นี่คือพ่อของฉัน)
- "This is my grandmother." (นี่คือย่า/ยายของฉัน)
Did you know? In English, we use the word "Brother" for both older and younger brothers. If you want to be specific, you can say "Big brother" or "Little brother," but just "Brother" is always correct!
3. Greetings and Feelings
When we meet people, we use polite words. By ป.3, you will also learn how to say how you feel about your family and things around you.
Polite Words (Social Etiquette)
- Hello / Hi (สวัสดี)
- Good morning (สวัสดีตอนเช้า)
- Thank you (ขอบคุณ)
- I am sorry (ฉันขอโทษ)
- Goodbye (ลาก่อน)
Asking "How are you?"
When a friend asks "How are you?" you can answer:
- "I am fine." (ฉันสบายดี)
- "I am happy." (ฉันมีความสุข) - Common in ป.3
Common Mistake to Avoid: When someone says "Thank you," remember to smile! In your curriculum, using the right facial expression (yawning, smiling, or waving) is just as important as the words!
4. Comparing English and Thai
In this chapter, we look at how English and Thai are different:
- Sounds: English words have "final sounds." For example, when you say "Sister," make sure to sound out the "r" at the end softly. In Thai, we don't always have these ending sounds!
- Word Order: In English, we usually put the size before the person. We say "Tall father" (พ่อตัวสูง), not "Father tall."
5. Helpful Memory Aids
Having trouble remembering the family names? Try these tricks:
- M is for Mother and Mom (both start with M!).
- F is for Father and Family (both start with F!).
- Think of "Grand" as meaning "older/bigger" — so your Grandfather is the older father in the family!
Key Takeaways
1. Myself: Practice saying your name, age (\(1-50\)), and if you are tall or short.
2. Family: Learn the six main members: Father, Mother, Brother, Sister, Grandfather, and Grandmother.
3. Sentences: Keep it simple! Use "I am..." and "This is my..."
4. Manners: Always use "Hello," "Thank you," and "Goodbye" with a friendly smile.
